There is a new MMO architecture and meta-client being released soon (already released?), called Multiverse. The people who started Netscape are supposedly behind this so it has a good chance of catching on. If so, this may be a chance for CCP to create an entirely new EVE II, building on the successes and lessons of EVE I (the one we have now).
If there were an EVE II, what would you like kept the same as today's EVE, and what would you like to see changed?

Multiverse is what the Firefly MMO is being built on so I'm guessing that'll be its "trial by fire". If CCP ever released an EVE II I would not think they'd use someone else's framework. As it is though, they've already stated emphatically that there will be no EVE II.

Multiverse is in open-beta. Anyone can register as a developer and download the server and client. I've been following Multiverse for a while now adn to be honest I am not that impressed with it so far. I've found their tools to be buggy and their client to be sluggish. Of course this is still in beta, so I haven't given up hope, but it would seem to me to be a step backward for Eve, which already has excellent network, rendering, and database query code.
Multiverse is a great idea though. It will allow hobbyist game designers access to an engine with all the basics for an MMO. They can then concentrate on filling it with content rather than on the low level code. I expect to see a lot of interesting game play elements implemented in these game that I am sure commercial developers will steal :)
As far as an Eve II, well I like the game as it is and I am not sure what new features I'd want to see in a revision to the game. Sorry I am no help on that front.

My list of things I like about EVE that I'd like to see continued in "EVE II": - player-driven market - skill training based on clock time, even when logged off - "crafting" also based on click time, even when logged off - player-driven sandbox for empire-building and PvP - spaceships as our primary avatars - rich backstory
Things I'd like to see changed or added in "EVE II": - finite lifetime for characters - large (virtually endless) explorable universe - player control of the major empires - player control of system security status - closed economic loop, no NPC ISK sources and sinks - player-designed NPCs rather than auto-spawned rats - mining platforms, so all players can fly PvP-worthy ships during a mining op - cargo drones, so all players can fly PvP-worthy ships during a transport op

It will be hard for CCP to escape the standardization phenomenon that has taken over every other technology-based product. Long ago, everyone wrote their own operating system, then Windows took over. At one time everyone designed their own CPU, then Intel and its clones took over. The list goes on...
Let's say a few years from now there is a standard MMO engine with a dedicated development team used in hundreds of games. Then it will be hard for CCP to financially justify its own engine to support just one game, and near impossible to keep up with the standard engine's pace of development.
