I've been playing EVE for about 10 days now and I am really enjoying the game. I haven't done any PvP yet as I'm still doing the Career Missions and trying various Characters. I know that the character creation doesn't pay a huge role in the game, but I do enjoy the role-playing aspect also. One thing I am pretty sure of is I would like my character to be a hacker/explorer. I am having a difficult time trying to decide my race. I',m torn between Amarr and Gallente.
For me, the Pros for Amarr: 1. Ships use laser based weapons. (From what I understand no need to keep buying ammo.) 2. I like the older look and long hair option for the males. 3. Ships look pretty cool. :)
Pros for Gallente: 1. I lke the Activist ancestry. 2. I like the Politics. 3. Ships look cool. :)
I'm thinking I would like an Amarr living in the Gallente Federation. I'm just not sure how to best put this into the game. Would I have to travel to Amarr to purchase items for my ships?
How are the Gallente's going to react to an Amarr ship?
Ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I currently have two characters: Malachite Ormand - Gallente which I created when I first started and Lostcore - Amarr which I created yesterday. Since I'm still new, I am not adverse to starting again completely from scratch.
Thanks. |

Skills for all racial ships are sold at every school everywhere, so you won't have any issues training up Amarr or Gallente ships with any character. And as far as the actual ships, modules, ore, minerals, etc., PLAYERS manufacture and sell those, so again the traders try to maximize their profits by selling everywhere. You'll find everything not only in high security space, but also in low and even null sec space. People take full advantage of the large cargo holds of freighter ships to transport goods to the sale hubs daily (if not hourly).
So you're set. The only considerations should be how the character looks, and roleplay.
Gallente are all about freedom, so they'll probably just ignore an Amarr character as "just another citizen," and Amarr ships don't phase them, as often Gallente citizens themselves use "whatever is the best".
As far as a Gallente in Amarr space, he/she will probably be treated like trash, but politely, as only the Amarr race is superior and following the correct religious beliefs.
Keep in mind, though, that most players do not roleplay. It's all going to be "lfg, lol rp, gf, why u suck?," and other abbreviations, with nobody caring what race you are. |

You're in luck, the ship you want to aim towards for hacker/explorer is the Astero - which is a joint venture between Amarr & Gallente technology. Currently, in most situations drones are more useful than lasers.
The starting Race doesn't have any bearing on the game other than you character looks, starting system, and your own personal beliefs about role playing. If you get into Faction Warfare the side you choose will have repercussions with the opposing factions, otherwise you can travel and trade anywhere.

From a purely practical standpoint, you can develop skills across the races. The ones you start with are based on the race you select, but you can skill into any ships. The skill books are available in all major centres, so no, you don't have to go to Amarr for Gallente skills.
In role-play terms, again most things are possible. Lots of characters don't even have Empire allegiances (being pirates, or null alliance members, for example). At a basic level, your Amarr character could easily live in Gallente space because we're very cool about diversity.
A Gallente going to Amarr space would be a bit more unusual, as they're considered both enemies and godless heretics. There's every chance you'd be enslaved. Having said that there's plenty of RP reasons why you could be there. Try reading the Intergalactic Summit forum here for ideas.

There are no differences between characters from different races from a practical standpoint - there are minor differences in starting skills - other than that, it's strictly role play. You can purchase ships and modules for any race anywhere in New Eden.
No one will care if you are Amarr in Gallente space or vice versa unless you let your faction standing drop below -5. At that point the faction police will shoot at you.
The aspirational ships for exploration are the Sisters of Eve ships - Astero and Stratios - they require cross training both Amarr and Gallente.
Lasers have the advantage of needing no ammunition but the disadvantage that they use a lot of capacitor and they only do EM/Thermal damage. Other weapons have different trade-offs. Amarr, Gallente and SOE use drones as a major weapon system - they should be part of your training plan.

Character creation has almost no effect in game apart from a couple of hours worth of training, the nubie ship you get and the geographical location you start in.
You want to be amarr flying gallente ships, just buy the skills, train them up and off you go. Amarr gallene cross training will (as mentioned) make the sisters of eve faction ships available to you and they're pretty damn good ships, armour tanked brawling cloakers, basically ambush predators and very useful ships for both PvE and PvP (if a bit expensive).
As others have said the market will stock most ships and modules in each trade hub, some at a mark up, some at a discount ,this is entirely driven by the "supply and demand" principle so where your character is should have little influence on what you can buy.
Fyi the trade hubs are (in order of market size) as follows.
Jita ( 4-4 ) Amarr (emperor family) Dodixi (Fed navy) Hek (don't know which station, the place smells)

Amarr and gallente ships also have skill overlap in that both races ships tend to be armor tanked several of both are bonused to drones. |

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't know about the capacitor use with the lasers, so that is something I'll have to think about. It sounds like, role-playing wise anyway, it would be safer to play an Amarr. |

Yep, just look at me. Wandered in a few years back and never got out again.
Seriously, a few general points. Since the only real consequences of character creation are for roleplay and immersion:
- It's no big deal to biomass a new character and start again. The longer you leave it, the harder you will find it and the more likely you are to stick with what you have. If you are not happy with your characters, scrub them as soon as possible. - Explore all the options available. Did you know you can have a first, middle and last name? That you can change the shape of your nose and your stomach and ... other things? No need to rush the character creation. - Get your character looking the way you like. You can change cosmetics at any time, but body resculpts later cost money. - Choose a name you can live with. You are stuck with it as long as you play EVE.

Hek is not a trade hub it's a place where all minmatar criminals are, watch your six cause getting a knife between your ribs is an easy task. The station is (Boundless Creations)
And you forgot Rens! Which is holyland for all the tribes hiding from the Amarr Navy forces. (Brutor Tribe station). |

It makes absolutely no difference what so ever. The racial specific skills that you are born with can be cross trained in about 4 hours. You can train into any ship regardless of what race you are.
You can buy any racial ships or modules at any trade hub. The race does not matter on access to ships.
Pick the race you like and that's it. There is absolutely no game mechanic that makes you pick one over the other. You could be born Amarr and fight for Minmatar in Faction Warfare. It totally does not matter. |

ShahFluffers here is a Gallente Activist that is trained in every weapon system, defense system, and ship in the game (sans Titans).
I have lived, missioned, bought, and sold in the Gallente Federation... lived, waged war, bought, and sold in the Minmatar Republic... fought for the Minmatar Republic...waged war in Amarr... bought stuff in Amarr while waging war... and now live in Caldari space.
I am just as proficient in all weapons and ships as any other race with the same skills... I have never suffered a penalty for using ships and weapons that do not belong to my race... and I have been able to buy any and all ships and equipment from anywhere amd everywhere on the map.

Cybernetic Arms. everything is better with Cybernetic Arms. my toon has two cybernetic arms. he is a mission running drone boat using bad mouthed CEO of a solo mining/mission running corp i can fly all hulls barring capitals- i have them (capital hulls) trained but too poor to buy. i live in amarr space and am a amarr toon, however have lived in all empire space, some low sec, some worm hole space and frequent null (it's so quiet there). my toon is also a PVE toon which has interest in everything from PI to production/reprocessing. (basically my toon is good at everything but PVP).
my alts are minmatar forum dweller (hasn't skilled once), and a gallente pirate vixen who ganks ventures for lols (and is too low a sec status to enter high/low sec)

To be fair to Hek, as much as I hate the place, it is one-third the size of Amarr from a trading perspective. In other words, pretty big.
(Goods on market, approx: Jita 28 trillion, Amarr 8T, Dodi 5T, Rens 4T, Hek 2.5T).
On races, a character of any starting race can train the skills of any of the races, can RP as loyal to any empire, and can actually *be* loyal in game to an empire of their choice. Yes, you can even be a Minmatar character who RPs as a collaborator with the Amarr, flies only Amarr ships, fights for the Amarr in factional warfare, will be shot at by Minmatar NPCs if they enter Minmatar highsec, and is regarded by many Amarr NPCs as a national hero (my interpretation of what 9.5+ standings means).

With the above in mind, lets look at the races from a RP/concept point of view.
Amarr are the quintessential Baby boomer white religious zealot bigot fucks who have everything and hate everyone, and they always want more. Gallente are the obvious left wing progressives who, per usual, talk the good talk but are fine with the use of excessive force when it suits them. In EVE no one is innocent, everyone is an *******. |

This.
Eve is more than a space shooter. Thats why it is still there though concurence made much better PvP MMOG. I mean - wargaming or war thunder will offer you team or solo PVP without waiting times and even with some serios form of match making. And they can be played for free plus has very agressive advertisment. No wonder EvE lost many players lately, but if you stay - you can build your own home here. Stand and fight, have friends and what to fight for (null soverenity, factional warfare etc). Nothing of this kind can offer shooters like WoT. Summit is an interesting place to keep informed.
But! You will live with the name you've choosen and stare at your awatar a lot. So choose blood race accordingly. Rest can be easely cross-trained.
Dominix with large lasers is the best ship for L4 security missions as long as you do not have skills for Maradeurs. Machariel or Rattlesnake. And ability to swap range immidiately instead of waitng till your ammo reloads is a very nice feature in PvE... there is a way how to help your capacitor ;) |

I'd just choose which race you prefer, although it sounds like you prefer Amarr.
As for which ships you want to fly, it doesn't really matter as long as you decide very early on as it won't cost you much time learning a different race's line of ships.
You may want to consider pirate ships at that point as well as pirate ships require 2 races ship line skills in frigates, cruisers and battleships.
Once you've done that you can consider what you want to RP as.
At least that is the way I'd approach it. |
