I sometimes do. I try to show them I'm still human, and that I care for them. Sometimes I shake their hands before jacking in. Sometimes I eat with them, or take them to a bar after a succesful SAR patrol. I can afford to do this, I've only lost a crew once, and I don't intend to repeat that mistake. I have become more distanced since that loss, but this starting to reverse since coming to Origin, where the risk of permanently losing crew is reduced significantly.
Before I came to Origin, or even since coming here, the only crew that I grew very attached to is my sub-warp racing crew. I hope to race with them again some day.

It would be easier to delegate all that part of my job to someone else, but as Master and Commander of my ships I have a responsibility to ensure that every component is working to the optimal level - and the crew is a large part of that.
I do try and minimise the crew sizes in my ships, because I am in a militia and ship losses happen a lot more in that game than in anti-piracy work for the Empires, but crews are still necessary and they need leadership which is my responsibility to provide. As my crews are all Kaalakiota citizens, they are my peers to a certain extent and, as such, my relationship with them has to be collegial.
For that reason I take part in their selection, their monthly evaluations, I check over their psychological assessments and participate in their physical drills and training. It's good for the men to see that I actually exist beyond messages from the pod and to see the kind of person they work for. It's good for me to stay grounded so that the risks I take with their lives remain proportional.

I spend a great deal of time amongst my crew, socializing with them like an extended family. Some, such as my crew chief Nelos, are so close as to be considered family - his wife and children reside on the Peione Estate. I spend time with the men and women in my employ, not only so that they know I am human, but so that I never forget. I know their names, their families, the details of their lives. And when one of them is lost, I mourn with them. We have lost a friend and companion as much as a crewmember.
Since moving my personal operations to Anoikis I spend much of my time in corporation-owned vessels, staffed primarily by employees of SM.RB. I spend less time with these folks. I take mess with them, run through operational readiness drills, and always conduct a thorough pre-flight check of any vessel I board, but don't form the same type of relationship I do with my own staff.

Surprising how many people do.
I don't, really. I used to make sure, personally, that they're fit for the job and can hold steady until the last moments before the hull goes up in flames. Nowadays I've got HR for that, they sort the candidates and assign ones that are fit. They also ensure the crew remains at good performance and that the morale is good - I just sign the bills.

Not anymore, unless I need something specific from them.
As a combat pilot I find it an inefficient use of my time which only serves to complicate the act of taking them into battle. That isn't to say that I care nothing for them, simply that they are willing participants who know what they are signing up for.
Outside of ship crews however I do communicate with baseliners on a regular basis. Comes with the job.

I will keep occasional mass to my crew and every member must also learn to sing. I can occasionally give the ship wide order to sing when im mining or heading into battle.
Other than that, not very much. |
