Eve-ning all,
I'd like to pick peoples brains on what they think will be the most valuable skillset for Eve Combat in two years time. To explain, a hobby of mine is training up characters and selling them on. I have already sold an elite industrial character and will soon put a Dread ready character on market. But if an experienced player could write a few words on what they think will be a desired skillset and career focus for 2009 in the Eve universe i would be grateful.
Grateful in the sense that the most well written post will receive 30 million isk.
Thanks in advance.

While I care not for the ISK, I would think a character along the lines of a racial combat master would be cool. Take this alt I'm on right now... I'm training her up to be a master of everything Caldari, eventually up throug and to carriers/dreads. I am going to train her to fly every Caldari ship, and use every caldari weapon [that means all T2 missile specs to 4, and all T2 hybrid specs to 4] as well as support roles such as ECM. By the time I'm done with her, if ever, it very well may be 2009 and she will be able to fly anything Caldari and fit anything associated.
I'm highly considering training up to Fleet Commander with her too and training the various warfare specs...

i would suggest specilize in one race. get all ships skills and the skill their bonuses gives too. for caldari that would be missiles and shield skills to max. and caldari ships. like interceptors, af, bc, bs dread and all other ships. to lvl 5 for max bonuses. along with interceptor 5 af 5. and all support skills.

My advice? I'd pick a character who can fly a Gallente Carrier, and then use a skill planning program like EVEMon to pad out his skills with supporting skills. Drones, support, rails... pick up command ships along the way, if you have space, as CCP's vision certainly involves more fleet- and squad- level strategy. If they succeed, a command ship character will probably be present in every good fleet. If they fail... hey, command ships aren't bad, from what I hear.
That being said, raising characters for no other reason than to sell isn't exactly in the spirit of the game.

It is precisely because i have played many aspects of this game, twinned with the unenviable fact that i no longer have the time to dedicate to it (trust me that hurts) that i dabble in character creation and delivery. I'm also the type of person who gains half the fun from actually planning stuff out as well as executing it.
Thanks for all your comments so far. I shall make a decision on prize winner this weekend.

My conclusion: I strongly recommend creating a Caldari character who is fully capable of controlling a tech 2 battleship.
My reasons: CCP is a business, not a charity. If you check the statistics you will recognize that more players are Caldari than any other race. CCP is not going to risk making the most popular race the weakest, because it would be bad for business - I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it's rational. If you go Caldari, you are guaranteed to have a character who is, at the very least, not considered to be a 'bad' one. You are nearly guaranteed to have a character who is considered to be a perfect setup for mission running, small scale and large scale pvp.
Furthermore, a Caldari mission runner would be especially easy to get money on as well as pvp with, giving two big reasons to use it.
My reasons are simple but logical - there is no way to know for sure what will be the best ship in 2009, but it seems more than likely that Caldari BS tech 2 will be the standard in high-level pvp.

It's a shame you only want suggestions for a combat pilot, because after thinking about this I think the most sensible character to create wouldn't be combat focused at all.
My suggestion would have been to max all trade skills and also train for piloting a freighter and transport ship, and make the ultimate trader. My reason would be that none of us can know much about Eve in the future, so predicting a valuable combat role is nearly impossible. However, a maxed out trader with a freighter/transports will always be invaluable to an organised corporation with an eye for making isk, who are exactly the sort of people you want to be selling to. It would also appeal, of course, to those individuals (who are usually very wealthy) that enjoy playing Eve's markets. There is also an extra selling point; it would be a wise investment for the buyer, as buying a perfect trader should pay itself back many times over in the long term.
As for your actual request for suggestions for a combat pilot, I'd suggest a character that can use all battleships with perfect skills - don't train anything that isn't directly needed for battleships, and everything that the battleship actually uses to 5. The reasoning behind this is simple and obvious - while other ships go in and out of fashion, the BS is still the cornerstone of Eve combat, and it looks like remaining so for the foreseeable future and beyond. I'd rather like to own it myself in fact (who wouldn't?), get back to me in two years or so if you actually make this one.

I created a 720 day (no implants) skill path for a caldarri Missile/Rail/Blaster Spc BS/Carrier pilot as in 2 years those ships are still going to be a large force in respect to mission and pvp based play. Caldarri was chosen as it is generally the 'accepted' favorite, and because it can be either turret or missile based, while the other ship types are mostly turret. This allows for future players to have more freedom in choosing their ship setups (Do they want a missile raven? or perhaps a Blaster/Rail Rokh?) Primary attention was given to BS skills as most people fly those for the longest time, even after they get carriers or dreadnaughts.
Covers all of the helpful 'passive' skills for optimal effect (IE--Shield management, energy management/operation, the passive shield/armor compensation skills, drone damage/hp skills)
Includes a complete Learning skill branch. In 2 years all of the learning time is paid off save for the L5 of the Rank 3 set (which I included for the possibility of another series of learning skills requiring it as a prerequisite, and that if the receiving player wants to train skills not on this original list they will get them at the maximum speed--increased ease of sale)
No industrial skills (save for mining IV for T2 miners--everyone mines SOMETIME) but if +3 implants are placed on the character during the first month (when the Cybernetics skill is mentioned in the skill path) Approximately 3 months will be saved which can be used for more economically based skills (such as Industrials, or refining skills, to the player's desire)
I saved the character skill path, but it is too large/long to attach here. If you would like the complete list Evemail me and I will send you an out-of-game Email with the file as an attachment.

No matter where you are in the eve universe the games run buy player demand. The market is heavily influenced by this demand, and a manufacturing giant would be my personal bet for the most prized character. Maxing research, trade and production related skills while maintaining high skills in the mining field. Other players are always in need of something, having a character that can provide for these needs would be invaluable. With the new contract aspect of the game, you never have a risk of loss with your transactions. Invention allows you to produce unlimited Tech II blueprint copies, allowing you to partake in the Tech II market. Eve is a growing game more and more people are coming around to love this game. As people come in, and grow themselves there will always be a place for a Production Mastermind. This path is truely timeless because everyone needs something in the game, this player demand will only grow with the game. So my recommendation is towards the Research/Production/Trade aspects of the game based on the newer features released in relevations.

If i was to start training a char from scratch, i would say train for command ships, gallente specificly, because they are very useful in fleet fights, they are very good solo pvp ships and general good fun! They are an asset to even mining opps so you realy cannot go wrong with them, also i think command ships are one of the most powerful ships in game, which would advertise to any person buying a new charecter, plus by training for command ships, you have to train BC 5, which isnt a racial skill so you can easily train for other command ships of different races.
On top of command ship, i would say train for hulk, because it is a great asset to your money making and it gives the best of both worlds, miner or pvper, which gives the availability to produce money to fuel you command ships when you pvp or what ever in them.
Also by training for command ships, you have Cruiser 5, so you can train for all recon's, hac's etc so it will make it a very shiney char when coming to sell it because you are able to use a wide variaty of ships.

Personaly, I would look at the most nerfed race/setups ingame and see how CCP would attempt to ballance this. For instance the Ammarr (according to forums) are hideously underpowered compared to their counterparts. Based on this, I would dedicate a charecter purely to Ammarr, as when they get boosted with a new ship/crystal, they will be in the position of a current Rokh uber pilot, everyone wants one. Similarly, Capital ships arent destroyted as much as battleships, so I would expect dreadnaughts and carriers to become more common, thusly capital ship skills would be a must. Also, science skills for all those new in station areas of the game. Who knows what fun you could do with a fat Gallente pilot, a doughnut, a fork and Graviton Physics 5

I actually think the most desirable characters to buy won't be DIRECT combat ships, rather things like leadership and gang skills as well as corp management.
Its very simple why really, most people will focus and concentrate on their industrial and pvp skills, a PURE charisma build basicly doesn't exist anymore.
With full charisma you could get uber fleet command bonuses and tons of corp management skills (ie sov) which supposedly allows you to deploy sentry guns and whatnot when its fully released.
In general I'd definatly say charisma is the way forward, people wont want to give up their mains for fun fights, leadership and gang bonuses are becoming even more vital now for gangs its going to be a really saught after skillset.
Dedicated alt fleet commanders are where I see it going. ______

I would recommend Training a Gallente Carrier Pilot, with the carrier boost of 10x the hitpoints Carriers are good fighting ships, also the are a huge help in corporate operations, such as hauling or a temporary re-fitting "station" during combat. I fly a thanatos and can say its great for what ever you want to do, except mining :)

From what i have seen from playing over the last eighteen months or more it would have to be a char that can fly all races of ships to a high lvl, when i made this char i did as everyong say's and stuck with minnie ships only intending to specialise but with every patch so far the minnie have got the shaft so if the char could fly all races it would make it a lot easier to switch to the ship's that are performing best at that time.
there will be more of a need for chars that can fly cap ships in the future as well, even now the numbers of dread and carrier pilots are increaseing daily and these ships will become more of a standard fleet in the future.

Giving into the fact that the game will change a lot over the course of two years. It's safe to say that they might at some point add T2 Battleships of some kind.
Well anyway, I would say pick a race that you prefer. Then raise them up on T2 everything right on up to Battleships. Get the T2 guns and max out damage etc etc. Same with getting support skills up to level V.
Then you should have every T2 gun skill up to Battleship level. Just get all the ship skills up, set up for interceptors, assault ships, and heavy assault ships. This give the person buying it a reason to want to. They can get right on in and have a nice if not great selection of ships to jump into.
Also get Drones up as well. Drones, drone interfacing, scout drone, and so on. Put those up to level five as well. A Deimos with T2 setup and T2 drones is scary. But make sure you stick with one race and specialize to that race solely.
However the idea of getting a Titan is also pretty cool. It takes about 300-325 days to get the skill to fly one. Then just get the rest of what it needs and start working on getting the ship. Then again you might want to keep that one yourself.*

I would follow this path.
1) Make an imbalanced attribute character (Say Brutor or Khanid w/ max percpt and will)
2) Start character with skills that include weak attributes. In Brutor / Khanid example above, I would start with an engineer
3) Implant +3s or better in mem and int to make up for lower starting attributes, and them max all the learning skills (for marketability
4) Train all of the int/mem ship skills to 5s, then go to drones, and then eventually drop +3 / +4s into percpt will and skill the navigation and general combat skills in gunnery / missiles.
5) After you've completed these goals (will probabyl take 12-18 months) pick a race that seems like its ships are going to be the most powerful in the near term and start skilling up for that race
Why follow this path? First, it lets your buyer be training in skills for his desired course at the fastest rate possible. Second not only does the buyer not need to train any of the "lessfun" ship support skills like energy management, high speed maneuvering, etc, but they are also almost universially useful across all 4 ship races. Third, it buys you time to figure out what is going to be popular to a more resonable timeframe. Lets say CCP decided to add Jove ships in the game 18 months from now and thats what everyone wanted to fly -- this char could start training for Jove stuff as soon as it became available, all without a single skillpoint wasted.
I think thats the way I would do it anyway...

Edited by: Apertotes on 15/12/2006 15:09:08 well, many people are advising specializing on one race. i advise you strongly against it.
yes, carriers and dreads are big and powerful, but i would rather fly every race's cruisers and BS and just one race capital ships.
so, my desired skillset for a pure fighter would be a character specialized only on frigs and cruisers. take into account that tech 2 ship skills are multi-race, so once you have trained intercetors 5, you are just 5 days away from flying any race's interceptors.
my proposal:
a character with level 5 on the next skills:
caldari/gallente/minmatar frig&cruiser, interceptors, HACs, destroyer, interdictor, BC, command ships
all missile support skills + standard/rocket/heavy/heavy assault specs
all drone support skills + gallente/minmatar specs
all gunnery support skills + medium AC/Arty/Blaster/Rails spec
all 7 non-capital navigation skills
all cap/shield/armor related skills
all generic fitting skills
--------------------------------------------------
that is all i would want.
why not amarr too? well, because they are too different. yes, they armor tank, same as gallente, but they dont use rails like gallente and caldari, nor missiles like caldari and minmatar.

If you're not going to play with this character then I would suggest to pick the race based on the most equal balance of int/mem/per/will and then max out gunnery, mechanic, engineering, electronics, drones and missile skills but not train any spaceship command skills. That way, whomever buys the char can pick the type of ship he wants to fly and will only have to train that as all his support skills will already rock. FOR THE EMPEROR!

It is not possible to predict how eve will change by 2009 so simply train for the ships you love to fly at this time, working from a powergamer base (this means either caldari archura or ammar khanid). All these other people are numpties and you should give me your 30million isk. look at the ships that were originally avilible in 2003, frigates cruisers and battleships, now look at the variety available today and a theme emerges. Of course some skills such as engineering, electronics ect will be in constant demand, however it is impossible to predict what race will be FOTM, having said that a focused character will sell far better than one who is spread being very good at one thing in eve is preferable to being a jack of all trades, Although as a base I would train for every ship type in the game ( with the exception of industrial ships). Currently characters capable of flying capital ships are often seen as alliance tools and sold and used as such, By 2009 this will not be the case. it is reasonable to assume that as time goes on the number of capital cabable pilots will increase so capital ships should not be a focus above other item but should only be considered later in a logical training path. Having said all this there is one character set that will be in constant demand for purchase by rich players: logistical support, a character wil high leadership skills and the ability to fly CBC's and use all warfare links, as well as carriers and logistics ships will become an essential ally. In addition since it is widley believed that t2 Bs's will be a form of flagship a command capable charater would probably sell best. the reasons for this are simple, being the healer/support dude is dull, there will always be hoards of people who want to fly HAC's, many less who can fly a well fitted oneiros or basilisk.

I think you want to look at why people buy characters. I think (not know, cause I haven't ever bought a char), that most people buy to avoid slogging through those long skills that take a month + to get to level 5. So I would train up a char that has BS 5, T2 guns on at least 2 races. Just for resale purposes, I don't think people look that hard at not having support skills maxed. I would max out the quick and easy ones and not worry too much about the other ones. For example, max out Engineering and electronics, but Energy Systems Ops? I don't think not having that at 5 is going to change the sale price.
