Edited by: Mitten on 17/12/2006 08:16:00 If you goto a Japanese / Chinese restaurant and you have never had sushi, and your on a first date, it's not a good time to experiment. Luckily for me, I was just at lunch with my sister in law but I just thought it was funny as hell because I was sittin there thinking "man if I were here with *..." they'd either be laughing their ass off or be disgusted... my sister in law is Filipino, she loves sushi and seafood etc and said I wouldn't try a bunch of stuff, so I did. I ate squid, which wasn't bad at all and I got 5 pieces of sushi. First piece cant really describe other than a odd version of a california roll... After dipping it into a wasabi/soy sauce thingy with chop sticks I put it in my mouth and began to chew.
I chewed for at least 4 minutes trying to get it to go down the entire time my sister-in-law staring at me like and probably thinking "I cant believe he did it..."
So after I finally got it down I moved on to the next... it was also a california roll but a bit different, the orange stuff on the outside was replaced with what looked like lil black and brown sesame seeds. Well I did the same procedure with this one. Dipped it in the soy/wasabi mixture, put it in my mouth and began to chew...
I finally got it down. Now on to the next!
(Also I just looked it up and neither were california rolls, one was a Philadelphia roll and one was a B.C. roll...)
I now developed a distinct dislike for california rolls and all the ones that look like it, so I try nigirizushi... It looked normal enough... a piece of crab, probably imitation crab, on top of rice wrapped with a thing wrap of that green stuff that I'm guessing is sea weed... Anyhow it looked like it would just taste like crab meat and rice. So not learning from my previous experiments I put it in my mouth and began to chew...
Again, after around 5 minutes of chewing and my sister in law going now I finally swallow it.
It is doubtful I will try it again but usually they have octopus during lunch... so I have found my new target!

How can you dislike California rolls?
Meh. You'll be back, they always come crawling back, and it only takes them three minutes to swallow the stuff the next time. And two minutes after that. And so on.

Yea the 3rd piece I didnt dip in soy/wasabi. I love soy, and I like wasabi. I've had them before but all 3 pieces I ate, it was the same taste that got me. My sister in law said that the rice wasnt normal rice but sticky rice and had a lil bit of vinegar in it, or somethin I dunno...
But it was the same thing in all of them that got me so x.x

Sushi works like that. First time you eat it you think either 'blaeh' or 'meh'. A few months later you try it again and go from either 'meh' to 'ooh'. A few more months later you crave it!

Edited by: Doc Extropy on 17/12/2006 12:03:16 Yes, Sushi... I had nice evenings @ japanese restaurants.
My favorite is all kinds of maki, especially Sake, Kappa and (if it is really soft so it feels like warm butter in your mouth) Avocado.
I also enjoy the Gari, some people really avoid it, but for me it's one of the things I'm looking forward most to when I'm heading for the japanese restaurant. Running sushi restaurants here often serve it separately because so many people don't know and / or like it.
There is an interesting story to the Kappa maki:
The Kappa are river spirits who suck out their victims (drowned people) via the digestion orifice. They used to have a cucumber in their hand when walking around.
I guess it is some kind of superstition, like "eat Kappa Maki and those Kappa dudes won't kill you", but I'm really not sure.
Anyway, japanese cuisine 4tw. Fish 4tw, rice 4tw and vegetables 4tw.

I've only ever had those Tesco sushi boxes and thought they were nice. Will be trying proper sushi from a restaurant over the holidays and for students who live in the UK and wanna try but feel it's too expensive then click here.

Sushi is addictive but few people have a good first experience. In Iceland I sucked a few workmates into trying some, its the fear factor the first time that ruins it. Cheat a bit and get the like a dragon roll, shrimp tempura (which is fried) roll or something with smoked salmon and cream cheese. They are more avocado, cheese or mayo flavoured to the raw fish virginity and isnĘt as embarrassing. Then you move yourself up to the good stuff like nigiri, sashimi and spicy tuna. -----------

p.s. Never go to a YO! Sushi in London you pay 4 times more and its not that nice. If you are crazed for sushi go to Wasabi, which are takeaway stands in Victoria station, t. court road and Piccadilly circus. Or go to Kulu Kulu Sushi or Gili Gulu, one of the cheapest and nicest in London. -----------

I've passed the Wasabi place a few times in T Court road but it still looks a bit expensive for the box you get.1/2 price Yo sushi shouldn't be too bad but I'll check out the other two you mentioned.

Sushi is crack.
You eat one, then another, then a third, then a fourth... and soon you realize you've eaten forty of them.

The first sushi I always have people try is the freshwater eel. That stuff just seems to have a very easy to get into taste.

Wasabi is the cheapest sushi place there is (and best for the price) to go. Never get the premade boxes. Its like 1 quid for two pieces, 1.50 for two pieces of nigiri. So you can make yourself a pretty big lunch for a fiver. Its a pick and mix sushi place.
Eel is the best, it can all be very addicting and I dont suggest you get sushi on a regular basis in Iceland.. who thought fish would be so expensive in ICELAND -----------

California rolls are by far my least favorite piece of sushi. And I love sushi. I am assuming that you went to a decent place to eat sushi, because if it was a cheap place with old fish, then I would completely understand the "blech" factor. Not everyone can like everything though, but I would suggest trying a roll that is cooked/deep-fried if the raw stuff doesn't suit your palate.
My favorite sushi place. Check out the "House Roll," it is cooked before being served, and I would think that almost everyone would like it - Tempura Shrimp, Eel, Avacado, and it comes with, I believe, chili sauce and bbq sauce(not American style) on the side. ----------------------

Sushi is great!
Once I made my own, my dad went out and bought sea bass, we salted it a bit and ate it raw. Great stuff. Sea bass 4tw. Tuna is another favourite. Salmon is cheap and nasty - avoid that. Squid is nice for the novelty value, but it doesn't really taste of anything. I really should go to one of those places again soon.

Mmm, my first sushi "experience" was at a very young age so I guess I was a bit more accepting of more unique foods, and now I'm addicted to it.
My favorite happens to be Philadelphia Rolls, and after that there's just too many to choose from. The only "sushi" I don't really like is Sashami, I once had the near-experience of choking on a piece of Tuna

mmm sushi
when im not at school i usually have it atleast twice a week. If anyone here lives near Akron, Ohio, check out the Golden Dragon in Cuyahoga Falls, on state street. Best sushi bar i've ever been to.
Mitten, if you really want to prove you have gastronomical courage, go to the nearest Chinatown or asian district and get Dim Sum (make sure to bring actual chinese/asian friend with you). Nothing like cows stomach and chickens feet for breakfast :) --------- Join my corp! shoot people! |

Considering that my family owns a japanese food chain, I have all the right to say "Sushi is Shogun!"
Try without wasabi first and foremost, especially to first timers. Wasabi will ruin it for you, especially if you're not into hot-spicy foods.
Sushi's meant to be enjoyed as a delicacy, and for most people it is an aquired taste. Good luck and enjoy it

And I hate you your going to have the best sushi you can get in 2 months!!! The people in japan are nuts when it comes to sushi to become a "sushi chef" it takes 10 years of apprentice work the first 2 of which you don't even get to touch the fish

tip 1. Put the little wasabi mountain in the dish with some soy sauce, then tip sushi in it.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. My personal favorite is probably uni(sea urchin), followed closely by unagi. Of course just as much as sushi in Japan, I am greatly looking forward to the month I'll be in Texas prior to moving. I haven't had any mexican food in over 2 years now. ___________________________________

I have a fantastic book, but its in danish. If you can read danish its called: Sushi - Lidenskab, videnskab og sundhed, by Ole G. Mouritsen (Proffesor in Bio/Chemistry).
But what you want is to find a good recipy for the rice, then some intro on how to roll them in nori seaweed, the black sheet around them. I am sure google can help you.
