So after taking a break from EVE for a year and a half or so I've been screwing around with mission running to kill some time and get a better way of making money. (Also because I realized mining is not only kinda boring, but SP invested into mining is never going to help me anywhere else ever. At least with missions I get to watch something explode.) And having been out of the loop for a while, I'm not entirely sure what ship would be best to aim for first. I'm not exactly rich, though at the moment I do have about a million and a half SP dumped into drones and the ability to use T2 armor tanks. Gunnery skills aren't as good (but not terrible. Just not good.), missile skills are utterly nonexistent, and my shield skills are mediocre-at-best. That leads me to think either Amarr or Gallente?
And while I'll admit in terms of style I love Amarr ships to death, I've heard they're a little SP-intensive for running L4's due to laser-boats taking a great deal of training while I seem to remember that the Domi was arguably the best low-SP L4 boat, due to the combination of an MJD, really good Sentries and being able to easily fit a massive tank while still dealing enough damage to get through a mission. That said, I've got no idea if that's still the case anymore since I heard something about a nerf to sentries, so I'm at a loss for where I should be aiming.
And just to clarify, I know there are much better ships in the long run than any of these for running L4's but I'm just looking for something to aim for to get into them in the first place, since I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination and I'm also pretty low SP right at the moment, so something like a Paladin or a Rattlesnake is a much, much longer ways off and not really a practical solution right at the moment. (though Paladins do look like fun...) |

Well Apart form there being about 6 or 7 threads covering this exact topic already on the first page of both Missions and the Ships subforum, my recommendation would be to grab a Domi and work towards skilling for a Mach. You can armor tank it without any problems, it uses sentries for many missions and uses Galente BS and the gun support skills you already have. |

Get super-cheap Nightmare and you won't regret it! Also Nightmare is cap friendly ship due to Marauder-like turret bonus so you can easily fit Tachyons and fire at incoming NPC with 1000 dps at 50 km with no problem. |

the main constraints are skills and budget.
from what you posted it sounds like a domi would be the best choice.

Don't forget about the good ship 'Friendship', it is very effective when you have limited budget/skills

Could I see a basic fit for a Nightmare that can accomplish what you say and have somewhat of a tank, or is a MJD the tank?

This is the Armor tank NM Fit I use
Highs Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ Multi Navy @ 43km + 41km ~ 888 dps Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ Multi Navy @ 43km + 41km Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ Multi Navy @ 43km + 41km Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ Multi Navy @ 43km + 41km Drone Link Augmentor II Drone Link Augmentor II
Mids Gist C-Type 100mn AB Tracking Computer II ~optimal range script Tracking Computer II ~optimal range script Tracking Computer II ~tracking speed script Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
Lows Damage Control II True Sansha Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane True Sansha Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane True Sansha Large Armor Repairer Heat Sink II Heat Sink II
Rigs Capacitor Control Circuit II Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I
Drones 5x Hammerheads II 5x Hobgoblins II
38% capstable with everything running but needs Armor/Skirmish links for AFKing ability. You can drop a cap recharger II for another TC for an extra 10km range if you want. Or you can shield tank it for an extra 100 dps and +180 m/s speed increase, but cap only lasts for 5 min. |

The OP is apparently already aware of other fits (namely shield tanked, though they don't seem to put much stock in it);
Quote:Or you can shield tank it for an extra 114 dps and +162 m/s speed increase, but cap only lasts for 5 min.
Use a cap booster - replace the CCCs for damage or warp rigs. I use to think that cap stability was the goal, but if you make gank your tank, you simply wont need your booster as much. Three tracking computers seems a little excessive, but to each their own.

Must be some taboo thing for Armor tanking the NMs. This fit is fabulous for Lev 4 mission running. You don't even have to refit for tank for different rat types and the tracking on my Armor tanked NM fit is so good that it hits reliably for good damage at the peak end of it's fallout range. And most importantly it's tank is almost as good as my non-bastion Paladins, which means you can AFK missions if you want ,but this requires armor/skirmish links with at least 2 NMs. The shield NM fit is a little faster for mission clearing if you're only using one ship, but it requires micro management (which I hate because I'm lazy).
NM Blitzing Fit Highs Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ multi navy 1018 dps @46.6km + 48km Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ multi navy 1018 dps @46.6km + 48km Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ multi navy 1018 dps @46.6km + 48km Tachyon Beam Laser II ~ multi navy 1018 dps @46.6km + 48km Drone Link Augmentor II Drone Link Augmentor II

Cap only last for 2min 10 sec with everything running so you gotta be on the ball. but this fit is good if you just wanna blitz missions as fast as possible. |
