The rats in the asteroid belts depend on the security rating of the solar system where they are. You get:
- no rats in 1.0 and 0.9. - frigates in 0.8 - 0.5. - frigates to cruisers in lowsec 0.4 - 0.1. - cruisers to battlecruisers and if you're lucky battleships in nullsec 0.0.
Complexes and anomalies that you have to probe first are a bit tougher, but still:
- frigate to cruiser in high sec. - cruiser to the odd battleship in low sec. - many battleships in null.
The problem with sites that you have to probe are:
- in high sec there are so many people that you'll almost never be the first to find the site, so the loot will be looted. - in low sec - piracy - PVP'ers love to scan down the sites and attack YOU when they find you there. - in nullsec alliance space - the alliance defense forces will hunt you down if you try to enter their systems.
So if you want to hunt NPCs, you can do so in a very controlled way by working upwards through the ranks of the agents of a combat-oriented NPC corporation such as the Republic Navy, Corporate Police Force, or other such corps. Level 1 agents send you against frigates, level 2 against cruisers, 3 battlecruisers, 4 battleships, and then it's just a matter of finding an agent that's in high sec so your agent missions happen there.
EDIT: There is an Agent Finder app in-game, look through the menu at the top of the menu bar on the left side of the screen. |

No, no, no.
Warp to belt. Eject gloves... ok we don't have gloves; eject bionic arm from NEX store at the front of the NPC ships in the belt, say an insult, and wait for them to demand satisfaction.
Then if you want to be helpful, fleet up with a newbie and bring him in as your Second. |

There is belt ratting then there are anomalies. You seem to have found and anom guide so I'll not spend much time on those only to say with each type of anom there are variations like: hidden, forsaken and forlorn. With in those variation there can be a big difference especially with regards to being able to have multiple spawns up at once in a forlorn if you don't kill things properly.
With regards to belt ratting there are many guides and many of them are a little outdated. That does not mean all the info in them is bad however I don't think that chaining works anymore or at least not like it used to.
So about 1 out of every 20 spawns is a special spawn and typically that means hauler or faction spawn. With belt ratting you are mostly looking for those special spawns so you just want to keep clearing the belts. Worth noting is that the spawn rate of the belt rats seems to have about an hour lag on activity. The kinds of things that help kick up the spawn rate is: people warping into belts, killing spwans, and I think even minning in a belt helps figure in to kicking up the spawn rate.
In null sec the belt rats improve in upgraded systems along with the anoms so the quality of the rats is not solely dependent on sec status in sov null however low sec has better bounties even at that.
The hardest belt rat spawn in null sec can be handled in a cruiser however not easily so you have to know what you are doing and be fit properly. As far as high and low sec I recommend starting out in like a 0.7 or so and working your way down to harder rats to get the feel for it. In low sec other players are your biggest worry. You best bet is to find a low activity system deep into low sec far away from high sec. Maybe scout things out in noob ships until you find a system that you want to try.
As far as null sec ratting you can try NRDS space or join an alliance that holds sov. There is NPC null but that is like low sec with bubbles. Worth noting is that the only systems in Eve that an officer spawn can occur is any NPC null sec system and -1.0 truesec sov null systems. I think there are only about 7 or so of the -1.0 truesec sov null systems in game so NPC null is a far higher number.
If you have any more questions I'll be more than happy to answer them. My main computer is not working atm but if you want to chat send me an eve mail and I'll try to log in and chat with you to answer some of them. I am US TZ CST which is GMT -6 or -7 depending on DLST. |

First thing I'd do is find a quiet area of lowsec and just see how you match up against the belt rats there.
One system I'd recommend is Fasse entered via the Ala gate - although it's close (3 jumps) to the dangerous lowsec system of Egghelende, it's not an important transit system nor does it have good resources, so it tends to be empty. The Ala-Fasse gate is the quietest one of the three gates into Fasse.
Go into a belt and clear it, and move to the next, just to make sure you can kill the battleship rats and the clone soldiers rats (if there are any of the latter in system). If you can't manage that then you will need higher skills or a different ship fit.
If a player shows up, either flee or immediately fight them. Decide immediately.
Next step is to meddle around with combat anomalies - come back and ask about them once you know you can handle the belt rats in low (which you probably already can).

This is really good advice. However for a less experience pilot you should also have a plan ahead of time as in decide when to flee and when not to before you even start.
That could be as simple as saying I'll flee if anyone pops up in local or you could decide to wait for Dscan results and approximate distance and ship type or what ever. The important thing to understand is that when you are inexperienced split second decisions won't be so split second. |

Yeah you want a broad line of march already planned.
For instance if in a small, agile ship you might say "I'll fight a large ship if I know it's not drone specialised. Anything else, I GTFO".
A Megathron appears on D-scan - you think 'great, I know that's a battleship and it's not drone specialised, so it probably can't hit me. Engage'.
A Golem appears on D-scan. If you knew the ship you'd say the same as I said about the Mega above, but you don't know what a Golem does (because rookies don't know every ship), so you GTFO.
A Dominix appears on D-scan. You know what this is - a drone battleship. You GTFO because its drones can probably track you.

You have the first and second sites incorrectly listed for class / level of difficulty. Also CCP has enabled all sites to automatically spawn in low sec and in null sec with Infrastructure Hub upgrade.

Battleships spawn in 0.4 systems and down, increasing in toughness, bounty value, and prevalence as the security level decreases. 0.1 systems will often have multiple belts with BS.
Remember that just because you cannot see that other player on dscan, does not mean he isn't warping around in a cloaked strategic or recon cruiser trying to land on top of you.
For belt ratting you generally want a ship that is highly mobile and cheap enough so as not to be a crippling loss. You also want sufficient damage output to break battleship and clone soldier rats quickly, with enough tanking ability to absorb damage from tougher rats.
Advice regarding your ship choice would require knowledge of your skill point distribution. |

One more thing.
In lowesc systems that are exactly 0.1 or 0.2 sec status, some belt rats that are quite lucrative will appear. These NPCs will have 'Clone' in their name, bounties of a million ISK, and they drop tags that are quite valuable and that suicide gankers will sometimes purchase from you.
There are also Clones in 0.3 and 0.4 but they have less desirable tags.
This is another option for ratting.

While not really ratting.. there's these things called escalations you might want to look into.
https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Cosmic_Anomaly
If you scroll down to 'Escalations' you'll see what signatures can escalate to what sites. New players can do 3/10's fairly easily in a Vexor and the loot it drops can be nothing up to a pirate faction frigate BPC and a handful of modules.
Not all of them escalate and the ones with "c" next to them are current.
