Long story short, I'm playing around in the trial and a friend plopped four mil in my lap to grease the wheels, so to speak. I played through the tutorial, which did a decent job of the nuts and bolts of flying places and shooting at stuff, but has left me completely ignorant of the deeper workings of the game.
What is the best course of action, in the fourteen days I have, to make the most of that money? The character's an Amarr soldier; I had more of an eye on missions than on tradeskills or mining, neither of which I figured I could explore well within two weeks. I'd like to be able to make it into a cruiser before my time's up, though I have no idea if that's possible with money and skill constraints.
Any advice that people would have would be muchly appreciated!

At your stage in the game? Investing in a Punisher and some nice pulse lasers and good armor tanking gear (small armor repairer, armor hardeners or energized plating) would be the best idea.

As a soldier you could probably train the cruiser skill right away, and you'd be flying a cruiser in a day or so. But you'd probably be lacking the support (guns, armor, speed) skills to really make the most of that cruiser, and so it would be a waste of a few millions, really.
If you're within the trial period, and you're looking to learn the most about the game before your time is up, I'd also say that getting the top T1 frigate (Punisher) and then trying to fit it with some decent small lasers, armor repairer, afterburner, cap rechargers, shrug. It'll force you to think about what skills you need to fit those, so you'll learn about the game.
At the end, if you still have spare cash and don't want to continue playing, give it to another newbie or back to your friend.

The Punisher is one of the two best frigates in the game (The other is the Rifter, which has a completely different playstyle). You can even go pirating in it effectively. It's difficult to spend more than 1m on buying and fitting it sensibly, so that gives you quite a bit of leeway to play around with it.
Make sure you include a visit to lowsec in your trial, although try to choose somewhere quiet. It should be possible to kill the 0.4 belt rats in a Punisher with your starting skillset.
You'll need about 12m to buy, insure and fit a cruiser.

1) buy a good ship to make good isk with it 2) buy skills to make the above-mentioned ship more uber 3) invest in trade or a mix of all the above

Amarr? Damn I'm sorry. (kidding lol)
I would get a decent cruiser and fit it properly.
Just a tip - if you dont want to waste all your ISK, just be pacient and get your skills first. Even the best cruiser can't do much without good skills trained. Twice the pride, double the fall. |
