Beams currently (visually) work only marginally differently from pulses. What about a beam laser that instead continues its firing animation for as long as the weapons continue cycling? Purely visual thing, but it would make beams more visually distinctive. |

Soooo a constant beam that never disappears unless you cancel the module or destroy the enemy ship? |

+1
Pulse vs Beam should be completely distinguished.
Pulse = one powerful PEW
Beam = Long, slow burn
Even if it's not constant like OP suggested, at least needs to be a longer ongoing beam, then can either cycle for a second, or just keep burning like suggested.

Or maybe combine the two with a Pulsed Beam approach that provides lower damage based on the beam but also adds higher damage over time when it pulses. |

I was thinking that a similar thing could be done with autocannons as well, where the guns just keep firing.

I actually like beams visually as they are. It's pulses that need changed, they should be "zap zap zap" per cycle, in a similar fashion to how autocannons are right now.

Would love to see this as well. One question though is what about hit-miss-hit events? Might look weird if gun fire just suddenly snaps to one direction then back to another. Then again, that's kind of how it works now anyways, just not as obvious and that's mostly the oddball visual glitching.

I never thought of it like that I can see where that would be a problem, but generally speaking, yes, you are getting it right. I was imagining a look more distinct then the Strip Mining Lasers though. |

Have the laser shut off until the next hit rather than flick to one side

How about making them "star war like" where a beam travel to the destination? It's not realistic but then again, rails and projectiles seem to have some kind of tracers that generate trails for the full range so vOv...

Problem with a DoT is damage calcualtion every ticks which mean more server time used. |

Lemme just break out the nerd glasses here...
Star Wars weapons are, accidentally of course because Lucas is a goddamned moron who wouldn't know a light year from an astronomical unit, actually somewhat realistic. That said, they are not "laser" weapons in any way. They are plasma bolt weapons. They act by using a magnetic bottling process to ionize a high explosive gas and compress it, followed by allowing it to travel out a linear series of magnetic chambers which throw it out the barrel.
Basically railguns, but instead of pieces of metal it uses ionized gas.
Meanwhile, the railguns in EVE are actually perfectly plausible, there are real life weapons that do precisely that.
[edit: The only notable "laser" in Star Wars is the Death Star.
