soo I have about $200 in best buy store credit, and need advice on which system to buy.
the xbox 360 is a well-established system with a lot of good games out, seems to have more video power than the Wii even though it's a year old, and it's (mostly) backwards compatible with the first xbox, which I never had, so that's also a plus.
the wii however is the hot new toy of the season with the unique controller, and it's backed by a company that tends to come out with innovative and fun new games.
I kinda want to get a 360 and play gears of war and dead rising and all the other cool games out there, but the Wii is new and unique and it tempts me.
which system would you guys suggest a relatively poor guy such as myself run out and purchase?

If it was me I'd go for the Wii, as I've had more fun playing Nintendo consoles than any other. I love Super Monkey Ball 2 on the Gamecube. _______________________________

Seriously though, I'd follow this :
If you intend to pay for all games, go for the Wii. If you intend to pay for the console and "obtain" the games, go for the 360.
I suppose it also depends on how important the 360 games you listed are to you.
(Personally I intend to get a Wii.)

I have both, and if I were in your shoes, Id get the Wii. The wii is all around more fun, and the 360 only has a few really good games out, that you can't get on PC. Plus, I've been hearing a lot that the price of the 360 should drop in at most a year.
And the wii is not a gimmick. Yes, there are a few cheesy games on the wii, but then again all systems have those. (Xbox 360 has the burger king games and the usual crappy movie-games, and the ps3...well Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire lags in OFFLINE)
But, of course, PC>all consoles

Zelda isnt crap but i agree the lineup right now isnt strong but recently released console lineups aren't ever brilliant.

360 only has games going for it right now, and that's most likely because it's been out for a while. Zelda is good, Red Steel is apparently OK (haven't got it yet) and there are some very good looking games coming. Go for the Wii.
And I have 'em both so you can't accuse me of not knowing about the 360

I hope nintendo doesnt throw all the momentum away and only have crap games that are stupid kids games like mario, zelda or kong. I would want some proper games with a real story, decent graphics and gore. Not OHNOES THE PRINCESS HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED!.

thanks for the input guys - I'm thinking I'll go with a Wii for now, because I don't even have an HDTV to take advantage of the 360's graphics. This time next year, I should have a better TV, and the 360 should be cheaper, so it seems like I should wait that out :>

well Wii is fun, Wii sports with a friend big fun. and Zelda, they say its the best ^^ red steel is good, nice graphics and playing a fps with the Wii controler is fun. bit hard to learn first :) and if you are into football, madden 2007 is great on a Wii.
and a 360, you cant go wrong but its just a console like any other before :)
this is Wii vs PS but goes well for a 360 too :) Wii vs PS3

I've had a 360 since august and ive owned pretty much every console since the atari 2600, nothing comes close to the quality and standard of the 360, my ps2 and normal xbox are covered in dust having been sat untouched since the 360 came in and ruled the roost.
Xbox live is very easy to use and every game has great online options, you can download all sorts of great stuff from game demos to add ons and videos. Graphics look amazing even on my rear projection tv (they are jaw dropping on a friends 40 inch hd tv) the amount of good games available at the moment far outstrips anything the wii has to offer. Gears of war alone is worth buying a 360 for.
The controller is a joy to use and very comfortable, wireless is deffo a great benefit as well. The wii is not a next generation console and i think it will fade quite fast, i have played a few games on it including the truly dire red steel and i was totally unimpressed.
Theres only one winner and its the 360 by a country mile IMHO.

Comrade nailed the primary reason to buy the 360. So many people complain that it only has games and no primary gimmick, like being the point of obsession for its fanbase, or having a nifty motion-sensing controller, without even thinking of the online experience. It was designed around online. I have no idea what the PS3 offers with its online capabilities, but for free you can download demos, trailers, TV shows, movies, game additions, etc. You can connect to your own computer (with specific requirements) and grab video files and audio files. You can even plug in a flash drive or your MP3 player and get songs off those. That's easily half the usefulness of the console there.
The games themselves, well, the only available game not on the 360 I can think of that I'd like is Fall of Man, and that's because it just plain kicks ass. But I'm not spending 600 bucks for just 1 game, and I'm biased for shooters. Besides, Gears of War is more than enough to keep me entertained <3
And don't gimme that crap about wanting "only a game console" instead of online functionality and all that jazz, if the only thing you're interested in a console for is games then your options are limited to the gamecube =| -----

and the Wii isnt built around the internet? you can send email/messages to people to other Wiis or PCs, you can browse the internet with full video/flash/java capability (infact, im posting this using my Wii right now). and although there are no games yet that support it, there will be plenty that will be online enabled in the next wave of releases. There is also the Wii shop in which you can download your legacy games from megadrive/snes/nes/n64/turbografx with more systems to come, along with other Wii software when released. It also has two usb ports and a built-in SD Card reader in which you can take photos, movies and music from and edit with the Wii Photo channel, kind of like MS paint with a few more tools, you can edit movies as well, and then send those via email over the internet. and at least its fully back compatible. every gamecube game will work with the exception of maybe Phantasy Star 3 online capabilites, which i think will work just im not paying for a subscription to try it. it works fine offline. and lets not forget all the legacy games.

the main reason to buy a Wii right now is for Zelda or Wii sports, but seeing as Zelda is almost identicle on the cube (apart from the controller of course) that only leaves wii sports as a solid launch title, other launch titles didnt really get any decent reviews. So the main problem with the Wii right now is the lack of good games available.
The 360 on the other hand has the opposite problem, I've had mine for only a couple of months and I'm having trouble keeping up with the good releases, I have about 5 or 6 great games that I still have not finished, 2 titles that I am really interested in buying and there are 2 killer titles coming out in january also, Lost Planet followed by *****down.
I'd really like to buy a Wii or ps3 but right now there is really no reason (good games) to buy either of them, was thinking about getting ps3 just for gran tourismo but we already have PGR3 on the 360 and with Forza2 coming out in 2007 (maybe even before gran tourismo) again I have no reason to buy any other console (for now). -----------------------------

Edited by: FooB2 on 28/12/2006 13:57:42 ill admit im a Wii fanboi now, but if youre buying a 360, fair enough. at least theres good cause to buy it. i dont really think you can compare the two consoles at all, seeing as the only thing they pretty much have in common is the fact you can play games on them.
but if you say you want to buy a PS3, then i, and probably thousands of other people, will want to write the words "COMMON SENSE" on a baseball bat and come and repeatadly batter you over the head with it.
*EDIT* as for breaking TVs with wiimotes, try this. its a site dedicated to the submitted smashing of various things with Wii remotes with photos. includes TVs, windows, lightbulbs, lamps, mirrors, people, etc etc.
and on that note, i took it round to my mates for a boxing day house party. hence beer. he got a full-on profession HD projector with like 2 grand for christmas. and a silvered projector screen that takes up his entire wall. you havent done anything till youve played Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling on what could only be classed as a 150" TV or something. bowling was the best cos he has laminate flooring too.

Who cares about Zelda when you can have Gears of War!
Seriously though that game makes me want to buy a 360 out of my 8800GTX cash.
Also the Wii is not exactly what I would call "new" technology when Nintendo had Duckhunt in the 90's with that gun. "Improved" maybe.
Edit: Oh and by the way the PS3 does have the sweetest graphics for a console. Just under a 7800GTS. However who cares when you can buy a 8800 series for that cash.

Can't comment on the Wii, as I have no experience with it, but it doesn't appeal to me.
I got a 360 a couple of weeks ago, and it's great. Been playing Gears of War on it and having a blast! --
