I do not know if I am the only one who is interested in such a concept, but I'll just put it out there all the same.
Having played a little bit of Star Wars: Armada, and a passive interest in Mongoose Publishing's Babylon 5: A Call To Arms, the idea just came to my mind of a EVE Online-style tabletop game in the same style as one or the other (since Babylon 5: Call to Arms was far more diverse than what I've seen of Armada so far).
I can imagine it as not only being a gateway into the EVE Online universe for new players, but also a way to expand EVE's universe beyond the gaming systems. |

I played games workshops Battlefleet Gothic back in the day.
It was a good game and great fun but the biggest issue was missiles and torpedoes as spamming ordinance that moves every turn in a tabletop game got to be a total PITA. |

If the tabletop version was modeled after some of the classic war games. The ones that could last for weeks with thousands of cardboard pieces, 4' x 6' hex maps, deep strategy and a real feel for what it would be like to be in command of massive fleets.
These pre-internet games are what got me into strategy games and MMOs in the first place and EVE is one of the closest to that feeling of being there that I've played.
Yeah...I'd pony up for something like that.

along the lines of the old school Avalon Hill / Victory Games type of board game... or a mini type game similar to old school battletech or possibly the old school FASA based Renegade Legion space ship game "Leviathon" or the not quite old school Battlefleet Gothic from GW ???
i would go for a style that uses a set of plastic based ships similar to the BFGothic but used some type of similar rule set that old battletech used... could use hex based maps or no grid and use inches based move... i could be done fairly easily i think... however the biggest issue would be BALLANCE... |

I don't have any experience with the Mechwarrior table top. Why did you choose to use this as a base model vs cross referencing X-Wing, Star Wars: Armada, Firestorm Armada, Battleship Gothic, etc. and combining the best concepts from all of those templates?
Also what scale are you looking to build towards? Fighter based combat, squadron combat, or full fleet battles. As each of these styles suits different play styles and game construction methods.
With 3d printing becoming more and more available I have been wanting to work with others on building out an idea like this as I have been playing table top turn based war-games for 17 years and have idle thought about EVE in this style since about 2004. Now it is in striking distance for fans remotely in non-for profit models that may be able to be picked up by CCP for syndication.

TC game - Use cards to mimic fleet batles. Play a cyno card, look through your deck and put into play any three ships. Tabletop game - simulate sovereignty wars. Dice game -simulate dog fighting
Personally, I think a TCG would be fun. EQ did something like that, where one could play the TCG in the MMO it was cool, a TCG like that inside eve that we could play while spinning in station would be nice.
A miniature game would be cool, one of those clix games, that come pre-painted. Would be hard to find partners though, so that's why I like electronic TCG, easier to find partners.

The problem is a Venn diagram. The overlapping area of EVE Players with Tabletop Wargame players is not large enough to be a viable commercial product.
And lest not forget we're talking about a company which, after 12 years, still hasn't find a way to sell branded baseball caps and T-shirts in a online store...
And no, it is not because they're a Icelandic company. It's because they're -í-íCCP-í-í and always need to reinvent the wheel as a irregular polygon. Maybe they should ask these guys how have they done it since 2001(!) and get some tips...
CCP Seagull: "EVE should be a universe where the infrastructure you build and fight over is as player driven and dynamic as the EVE market is now".
62% of players: "We're not interested. May we have Plan B, please?"
CCP Seagull: "What Plan B?"

Yeah...I'd pony up for something like that. Mr Epeen I really miss those old games. They required some intense mental energy, and if you made one mistake, you might be kaput. I don't think my friends and I ever actually finished an entire game. But after a few hours of moving chits around, rolling on the Combat Results Table, and consulting rulebooks, you could tell who was going to win. If we actually finished the game.
Later PBEM PC games used the same hexes and chits system, but took the pain of dealing all the die roll calculations out. Great stuff. But the drawback is, with the PBEM format, you might get 3 turns in per week, instead of 3 turns per hour. Still fun, if you can get used to the pace. Get an email today, do your turn, forget about it until your opponent responds. Play two or three games simultaneously, if you want more action. Basically, when you your check email, you have a turn to play, in addition to your usual email stuff.

There's a lot of Space Table Top games out there... Firestorm Armada, Starwars are probably the priemier two. Star Trek has a "Clix" style game which is models with bases that turn (with a click!) to mark damage and abilities. |

I saw those models that my father assembled when he was young, they were awesome. Then I aquired model of a plane and thought it would be relaxing and easy to asseble it. When I started gluing it together, I was sooooo horribly frustrated. Damn I was sooooo frustrated, cursing whole time until I finally made it. Then I painted it.
It is the ugliest, most sloppily assembled model I have ever seen in my whole life. And it looks like ****.
But I keep it as a reminder not to assemble models again. And because I made it, finally.

Seeing how space battles are in 3 d and table is flat, i dont know how they would handle the rules, without resorting to some simplification, making it a flatland kingdom. How many EVE players play strategic games online? I was for example a player of Beta CoH Online while it lasted, and that was so damn good game I would play it every day to this day, as I have been until they closed the beta and made the next CoH in line.
I would like to see strategic EVE game. but with ground combat, on PC. Commander would be a clone mercenary of one of 4 origins like in Dust, It would be your character, your Hero that participates in the battle, you would have many units that are ground based and are usual empire militias and pirate factions mercenaries, and the battles would take place on planets, and battles would affect the eve universe, and it would be awesome. I am crazy...

ummh ... EVE is sorta flat. You can go up and down "levels" of sorts a bit like a submarine but both the solar systems layout and combat in generally is sort of played in two and half dimensions. No looping the loop in EVE.
EDIT: To clarify EVE is not 3D in the sense you see here. |

You know there was a Star Trek paper stretegic game. This flat variant of EVE would look very similar on the table, I think.
Else maybe modified 3D chess with eve ships miniatures as the figures?
But I would really want to see strategic PC game with battles on planets. Hnnng!

One more idea why people could play tabletop spaceship game, rather than video game about spaceships. He does have a point to some extend, I imagine he would not like gankers very much, same as every broken mechanic.
