Looking up fit examples for ships and such, they always tell you to use the correct ammo/tank modules for the types of enemies you'll be facing. The issue I have is that I don't know how to determine which enemy types I'll be facing.
Is it mere trial and error or is there a way to determine what I'll be facing in the various activities (i.e. missions)?
I asked in help chat and was recommended to use EVEMaps and look up the system. I did, but it only seems to list local pirates. I suited up some ammo and modules to fight against Angels and so far all I'm fighting are EoM in missions. |

I appreciate the information, but I'm asking how do I determine which enemies I will be facing ahead of time. Do I need to scout missions out or is there some easier way to know what I'll be facing before I get into combat in terms of PvE? |

The local rat race ( meaning racial make up of the NPC rats not like the euphemism ) is determined by region. Basically warp to a belt and see which rats and all belt rats in that region I believe will be the same. So your anoms in that system will also be of that racial make up with very few exceptions.
As far as missions each agent has a pool of missions that you will get and it's specific to his corp and location. So basically it will vary from agent to agent. However they often tend to favor missions of a certain racial type and that often is the race or races that work best for the local faction. What I mean is that in Caldari space you'll usually get more Guristas and Serpentis missions and almost never get Mordus Legion missions due to there good standing with Caldari.
Likewise in Minmatar space you'll get a lot of Angel missions and in Amarr space you'll get a lot of Sanshas and Blood Raider missions. Note that you will get other pirate races in all of those regions this is just a general tendency.
When you get offered the mission it usually has the race of however you will be fighting listed in the mission briefing and if you can't read it then you can always click on it to open up the info UI on that racial pirate's type.
I hope this helps |

Mission reports is a great help for mission running but as you can see many mission require you to know which racial version of the mission that you have. Which goes back to checking for their racial icon in the mission briefing or mission info if you have already accepted it. |

Just to add a bit to what, er, keysmash said above, the group you'll be fighting against is just to the left of the Location information: http://puu.sh/kXRB5/fb962a1715.jpg
In that screenshot, the enemy would be the Caldari. You can click on the racial icon to bring up some general info on them (right-click gives a normal context menu, while left-click takes you straight to the Show Info option).
Occasionally you'll find that you don't have a race there. In those cases, you're either not going to be fighting anyone, or you'll be fighting Mercenaries (usually). Refer to the post from Mephiztopheles for damage types for Mercenaries.

Once you've made your choice, join the EvE-Scout channel and request a scout to make sure your connection is clear!

the mission text and icon will usually tell you which faction you might face. there are only a few exceptions.
how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Look for a faction icon for those missions that have a standing penalty (it is clickable).
http://dl.eve-files.com/media/1201/2012.01.09.13.24.14.jpg
If there is no icon, then there is no standing penalty, unless it is a storyline mission.
If you are piloting a ship with a damage bonus, typically you will use that bonus in most cases. Example: A kinetic bonus works well with everything EXCEPT those that are EM weak (Rogue Drones, Blood Raiders, Sansha). Thermal is considered a generic damage that works pretty well on everything.
You also have to consider range and tracking when picking turret ammo. |
