It started out with me checking out Eve-central for potential goods to trade between stations. I eventually noticed that "Standard Sooth Sayer Booster" was sold for 900 k in Derelik and bought for upwards of 2 million in The Citadel and The Forge.
I make my way to Hothomouh VII - Moon 2 - Ammatar Fleet Assembly Plant in my unfitted Velator. As i arrive i see that there are still about 80 Standard Sooth Sayer Booster for sale, i buy 43, leaving me with about 10 Million in my wallet.
As i undock, i get a message telling me I'm carrying contraband. Oh well, I've already sunk most of my money into the cargo, what is the worst that could happen? i think to myself.
I continue to undock and as i jump through the first star gate, CONCORD sends me a message prompt to let them confiscate my cargo.
I see that I'm already jumping at this point, so i just hit "NO" I repeat this process 7 times, at which point i notice my wallet flashing.
I open it up and see that I've been fined 6 Million each time I've jumped to another system, and now my balance is at -30 million isk.
screenshot
At this point, my ship has stopped in front of a star gate and CONCORD prompts me to hand over my cargo once again. I hit no, and this time i cant get trough the star gate, and they proceed to blow up my ship.
That was the end of my little story.
Even if i had gotten to Jita to sell my goods, I now realize that the 6 Million isk fine for each jump would have accumulated to more that which i payed for the goods, as well as any profit.
I will probably manage to get out of this hole, but it seems like a pretty bad thing, it it were to happen to a new player. all it took was me buying something for 900K isk.
What would be the best place for me to send feedback to CCP regarding this?

would that prevent the fines as well? I mean, if i knew i could get into negative credits, or even if the contraband prompt would have been on the purchase of the item instead of on the exit of the station, i would probably not have tried. |

Put that stuff in an instawarp ceptor and stock an NPC null station. Gonna take some research, see where it's needed, see where it sells. Needs some nerve to move 100s of millions through hostiles. Use a scout. Could pay off. Moving that stuff TO Jita? TLDR get out of hisec.

I'm not sure why CCP would want to hear about your failcascade... Then again maybe they need a good laugh.
FYI if you click on the item and read it's information, it will tell you it's a illegal contraband in the eye of customs. Even if you won't read anything, the first jump into high sec would have poped up a nice warning and at worst you would have paid 1x fine or even the first undock into high sec...

A lot of people say this is my own fault, and yes, i totally agree, I didn't make this thread to say otherwise.
I could have avoided it by researching the item before i bought it, to see that it was contraband. but i didn't, and the hilarious events that unfolded ended me up with a wallet balance of negative 30 mil.
Which i can probably cope with since i had a few ships stashed here and there that i could use for mining or ratting.
The issue i have with the situation, is that it was so easy to get in, if a new player does the same, he/she wont have a safety net to fall back on.
I think getting blown up, and getting negative rating with local factions is fine, but the fines that left me in the negative seem a bit excessive.
d0cTeR9 wrote:Hahaha... i was wondering if anyone would try to move boosters unprepared... now i know I'm not sure why CCP would want to hear about your failcascade... I think the warning might be better at the actual purchase screen, instead of telling me i have contraband on my ship as i undock.
In hindsight, knowing i could get negative balance, what i should have done is to put the goods back on the market and wait for someone else to buy them, but i didnt know that at the time, and im sure new players wont either.
The popup boxes telling me to surrender my cargo didn't really communicate to me ( unless i missed that part ) that i would get fined if i ran. And after the first warning, i was on the run, who has time to read stuff at that point? Which is why i noticed my wallet flashing after 7 jumps.
I just think it is too easy for new players to get totally wrecked by something like this, main issue being the negative wallet aspect.

When I was noob, I looted some tiny amount of drugs from a level 1 mission site or some such, and got the warning as I jumped through a gate. It flashed by fast, but I got the gist of what it said. I docked in the next station and tried to get rid of them by selling them on the local market but I got no takers. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're still there in that station. |

I got bit by this as a young newbie as well, however, I was not to negatives, just lost like 1/6th my entire isk stack with the purchase, and then let them confiscate them. Granted, that was a long time ago, 10 years.
I guess the purchasing of drugs needs a warning? Which might be hard to implement.

You are given a warning about contraband when you pick it up, you are give a warning about contraband in the item description, you are given a warning about contraband in the faction description of whoevers space you are in, simple common sense tells you smuggling contraband has consequences, concord even give you a chance to cut your losse sand ditch the cargo, exactly what are you complaining about? 99% of new players would understand these warnings and leave well alone (there was a mission explaining contraband in the NPE last time i did it, no idea if it is still there), or at least if interested in smuggling find out how to avoid detection before committing the crime.

It was my first run in with contraband, i have been spacetrucking stuff back and fourth for quite a while, i was not expecting this acquisition to be any different than the previous ones.
Therefore i didnt really look closely at what the attributes of the item in question.
The first warning i got (saw) when was i was going to undock, and as i wrote, i was pretty pot-committed at that point, since i was unaware of the fines etc.

Good to know! Although, my encounter with contraband here was a mistake, so i dont think i'll utilize the knowledge anytime soon.

If I had to make one suggestion, it would be to have it moved. It would be a lot more effective in the New Citizen's forum as far as message is concerned. Stories like this reinforce that it's not just them making major mistakes in this difficult to get a handle on game.

Actually, I rather like the fact that playing Eve needs brains and tenacity to survive (far less thrive).
If being difficult to grasp everything immediately means that the real dafties bale out, then this is largely a good thing for those of us that do stick it out. Can you imagine the shenanigans and tears if the game really was populated by idiots?
Actually, wait. Moar idiots, please.

Indeed. I read the OP and was surprised. On the one hand, I didn't think smuggling had this much content. On the other hand, smuggling has long been neglected as a mechanic or player profession.
One idea I hoped to see in the past is something implied from Templar One whereby it appeared that Mordus (and others) have private gate networks. CCP has made mention in a recent conference (mentioned in a TMC article) that players may get more opportunity to work with pirate factions in the future. Building enough standing with pirate factions in order to use their gates would be a good boost in the interest of pirate factions, going beyond just grinding LP to sell ships in highsec, and additionally bring smuggling beyond these ham-handed mechanics.
This present state of smuggling is such that a lot of potential Han Solos out there are shorted.
I look forward to smuggling walnuts through Amarr space.
