A FREIGHTER WITH 10 SALVAGERS ON IT.
GIVES YOU PLENTY OF ROOM FOR LOOT.
Only in ASCN would someone consider the solution to being short an office to be "Drop another Outpost" |

Common wisdom has it that Destroyers are best. Lots of hi slots, good speed and reasonable cargo holds make them ideal. Personally I use a Catalyst with 4xTractors and 4xSalvagers. Slap an AB on it (deadspace can't use MWD) and it is good to go (had to add some cap boosting stuff as runnign all that drains cap fairly fast.
Cleans up loot/salvage in no time.

You can skip the freighter. That was a joke.
A) They have ZERO slots for anything B) They cannot pick up anything while in space (only in space dock) C) Even if they did they are gawdawful slow D) Their cargo is lightyears bigger than anything you will ever salvage. You could salvage every day for a month and never fill it up E) They are a pain to train for F) Even if you could fly one they are insanely expensive G) Read "A" again...couldn't do it even if you wanted to

Common thought is to go with Destroyers, but personally i salvage in low sec mostly, and have i found a Vexor works great. 3 tractor, and 2 salvager is a little slower, but drone bonus, and space leave you small defence ability should you get jumped while salvaging. add a plate, and repper in the low, fill the rest with expanders i can haul over 800 a run. the Exequrer can hold more, but has 1 less high slot, and slapping salvage on a bruitix is just wrong...
What can I say to be witty, and stand out-ish here? |

You need a lot of hi (tractor & salvage) and low slots (nano & cargo) for a pure salvage ship while retaining as much cargo space and speed as possible. The amount of salvage will also affect the amount of cargo space you need.
From a gallente perspective use a vexor up to lvl3 missions, for level 4 use a brutix.
If you are in no danger then I use AB + cap charger in mids, a brutix will allow you to run the AB permanently, a vexor won't.
If you want to really salvage quick and efficient I use a Hurricane which imho has the best balance of hi-low slots, speed and cargo while not being overly expensive.

As a 0.0 inhabitant and gallente, I fly a domi, brutix, Vexor, Iteron and cov ops. I found that the Vexor is quite a good multirole vessel for low-sec. I actually used one as a pre-covert-ops vessel and it works great.
As a Salvager I use ninja tactics, as I salvage in low-sec and 0.0, I need to be fast, be able to run and hide. And, as I often salvage other people's wrecks, the ability to hide is quite helpfull as I often need to remove some useless loot before I can salvage, thus receiving an agression timer.
My Vexor needs to be able to run, so I have this fitting:
Cloak 4x salvager 10mn MWD, cap recharge booster, shield extenders. 2x WCS more cap boosters. 5x Med drones.
I need the WCS to get away from an angry belt ratter, and from the evil gate camps. Furthermore, the cloak saves me from anyone who tries to hunt me down and the shield extenders make sure I can take some hits before I warp.
For low-sec you dont really need a tractorbeam as you can only tractor your own, or corp wrecks. So I need to fly to them all anyways, hence the MWD.
I dont do it for the cash, as my 0.0 ratting days earned me enough. I do it for the fun of making isk out of trash :) and it earns nicely enough. Up to 10mil/hour if I am lucky to find a ratting group..

My alt flies a Catalyst as a general support ship, including salvaging and looting:
5xSalavager 1xTractor (Ratting, so there's never more than 2 cans to pick up) 1xCloak (To hide and to get close to rats to warp my main in on top of them)
1xMWD (To get to other people's wrecks, on which tractors don't work) 1xStasis web (To hold down secondary targets)
3xExpanded Cargohold (All the better to store you with) ----------

I used to use a Catalyst, but got tired of the cap running out when using 4 tractors, 4 salvagers and AB at the same time. Also found that some of the level 3 missions gave more loot/salvage than even my expanded cargohold could take in one trip. Since I am in the process of easing into level 4 missions, and expect there to be even more stuff to collect, I have switched to a Brutix - I had one lying around doing nothing.
4 tractors, 3 salvagers, AB (or MWD if you prefer), plenty of cap and more cargo space.
However, I only use this as I had one anyway - 25 million is a lot to pay just for salvaging.

Edited by: Matalino on 15/02/2007 15:46:14 Personally I like using a Battlecruiser. Overkill, yes, I know. But I can fit and run 4 tractor beams, 4 salvagers and a microwarp drive without any cap problems at all. The lows allow me to fit a few expanders and nano's for added cargo and speed/agility. Flushed out the remaining mids with sensor boosters to improve lock times. I can salvage any level 3 mission without needing to unload part way through. When I move to level 4's I expect to be able to do the same by adjusting the expander to nano ratio.
Edit - The battlecruiser that I went with was the Hurricane because it let me max out the high slots and gave me plenty of lows to go with it. You could do the same with a Harbinger, but I had more SP in Minmatar ships.

Hi. I'm new to Eve. I'm currently running around with two salvage guns and can't find enough wrecks to salvage.
Where are people finding enough wrecks that they need 6 salvage guns!? :)
In other words, where should a new player be looking for salvage.

Missions is a good place for salvage. You can run the mission, then salvage all the wrecks, which can with some missions be quite plentifull.

Yeah, 6 salvagers seems a bit excessive. Maybe they have tractor beams to pull more wrecks into the 5000m range, or maybe they don't want to waste time sitting through another cycle if their first one fails. In any case, if they use a dedicated ship to go through wrecks then they might as well fill up all the high slots with salvagers.

Well, I salvage in 0.0 and lowsec mostly. I scour the belts for wrecks. Usually I scan to see if there is anyone else closeby.
Its a dangerous job, but someone has to do it!
And to be honest, I aint the nicest salvager either. I dont have anything against ninja salvaging to steal a wreck from someone else. If there is loot, its mine as well. I use 4 salvagers, not to salvage 4 wrecks, but 1 wreck with 4 salvagers, that way it goes quite fast!
Hunting for wrecks in 0.0, with 10 pirates around, now that is exiting.. no chance to fight back, your only chance is to run and hide... the adrenalin

Edited by: Simon Jax on 20/02/2007 21:06:21 Destroyers tend to be the most common ship used for Looting/Salvaging.
Personally, I prefer the Exequror for the task due to the very large cargo bay that comes with Gallente Cruiser IV. It's relatively inexpensive, insures fully, and gets the job done. For level 3 missions and 0.0 looting/salvaging, I find the expanded cargo space to be more useful than additional tractor beams/salvagers.
In addition, if you are just running around salvaging in belts and whatnot you likely won't be able to use the tractor beams on the wrecks. So in that case the Destroyer gives you a speed advantage, but othewise the extra slavagers are of limited value. --Wherever you go, there you are. |

tier 2 BC - lots of high slots for tractors and scanners - lots of mid slots for tankage or power etc - lots of low slots for expanders, tankage or power etc - lots of shields power cpu and most importantly cap - can target lots of objects (read hear reeling in cans while scanning cans) - 3 rig slots for salvage tackles
can be reconfigured to salvage under adverse conditions
is big enough to take a few hits
I personally recommend the HOOVERcane (a "slightly" pimped out hurricane)
