Just very recently, I remapped. Wow - feels really weird to be queuing up so many Level 2 and 3 skills. (And kinda' nice.)
Something I can not remember for the life of me. If you have a skill that completes during downtime, and switches to the next one - does the next one (effectively) start training immediately, or not until the next downtime? Here's why I ask:
At the bottom of EveMon on my main char sheet, it says in all caps and red, 'DOWNTIME' next to the skill queue. And indeed, my current skill finishes training 3 minutes into daily DT. BUT, EveMon also tells me that my training queue will progress as if there is no training gap. (I am looking at completion times in the queue window.)
So is this just maybe an artifact of EveMon from a long time ago when there was no queue and hence if a skill finished during downtime, you were wasting minutes because you couldn't log back in to start the next one right away? Is it one of those things where, in an ideal world, the EveMon devs remove the bright red, capital warning 'DOWNTIME' from the main character sheet, because it really doesn't apply anymore?
Wondering if I'm seeing things correctly.

I'll avoid some detail on this but my understanding is that effectively yes your skills change during downtime.
I think it has been left the way that it is on Eve mon not by mistake but just as a nostalgic hold over.
However there are some assumptions here in what I've said |

The EVEmon warning only has meaning when that is the last skill in your queue.
Keep in mind that it was more important when the queue was 24 hours, and typically there was only one skill in it.
Trivia: Skills even train when the servers are offline. |

Before that there was no queue. People had to set alarm clocks to wake up in the middle of the night to add a skill. Also did a lot of skill juggling so that skills could finish during hours that the player would be logged on. |

I think evemon's downtime message has more to do with the API's it uses being down. I'm not 100% sure on that though.

The 'DOWNTIME' indicator is, as Tau mentioned, a legacy part of EVEMon that dates back to the "only one skill in queue". We left it there just for the purpose of alerting people in case they forgot to fill up their queues.
Probably it makes more sense to display it if EVEMon detects that there is only one skill level in the queue and it finishes at DT. I'll see into changing that behavior for the next release. |

Oh yes, I indeed remember those good times. I played for half a year in 2007 and another 6-12 months in 2010. I was more of the skill juggler than an alarm clock person, because I hate waking up early for anything. :)

I can already tell just by this post you are an outstanding software engineer. I hope you currently enjoy a fulfilling and rewarding career in technology, if not coding itself.
Thank you for being willing to consider an update to a detail that many would chastise me for even bringing up in the first place.
May I humbly ask a favor? In the changelog, if you mention this addition, would you mind adding my name in parenthesis? It's really fulfilling to look at a great piece of software built over a course of years, and be reminded that in a tiny way, I was able to suggest a way to make it 0.001% better.
Thanks to the whole EveMon team - what a kick-ass tool. |
