Now i recently started playing again after a couple months of downtime and I was thinking I would pick up where I last started off, getting a covert ops ship. I was wondering if it's a profitable endevor to use my new skills and ship for piracy? Or should I just stick to normal ships?

That is probably going to depend on your play style, it is a great set of skills to have but it would probably get boring if it is your "primary ship/role". That is assuming that you are in a gang, if you're flying solo often than skilling for the cov ops before more of a combat ship may not be wise.
The best bet imo would be to train up an alt for cov ops and train your main char with better combat skills.

Cov ops ships themselves are not all that useful for solo piracy. Covert ops proper have very, very limited firepower - you might score some noob frig kills in them, but not much more than that. Stealth bombers have limited usefulness for ambushes, but shine only in gangs. HOWEVER, Covert Ops skill (and almost all other skills you will learn to fly cov ops ships) are prerequisite to getting into recon ships. Now these ships are very, very, very, very nice for piracy. Such ships as Pilgrim and Arazu are more or less solo pwnmobiles (if used correctly). So go ahead, learn the Cov Ops skill and then try to get into recons. In the meantime, you might find some fun and creative uses for Cov Ops frigs.

Not going to be doing much solo pirating with a t2 75mm rail.

Covert Ops are useful for probing, as you can warp to your target cloaked. If you're probing a combat ship, you naturally need a friend or ten to actually kill your target.

Covert ops frigates are completely useless... with a lot of luck, and no probe launcher fitted, you might be able to take out a T1 frigate or afk shuttle. But 95% of the time, decloaking a covert ops frigate anywhere near an enemy is just a good way to lose your 80 million ISK cloak. The damage is awful, and they're extremely fragile. Just probe them out, set a warp-in point, and let your friends do the killing.
Recons on the other hand, those are very effective for piracy. The Pilgrim and to some degree Arazu and Rapier can be solo pwnmobiles in the right hands, and all of them are incredibly dangerous in the gang support role. The covert ops cloak is a priceless advantage, allowing you to sneak into perfect attack position or just as easily ignore any opponent you don't want to fight. Since half the challenge of piracy is target selection and getting into position for the warp scramble, you can see why this is a huge advantage.

I use an alt with a covops to probe folks out, but if I were solo, i'd go for a recon ship. With the right skills and setup they can be devastating.

I'm currently training for a manticore, as well as an alt training for probes, the plan being with some corp-mates to use my probe alt (eventually in a covert ops frigate) to find people in belts or safespots then using the stealth bombers/force recons to take them down, is this viable or are we aiming too high?

Nah, probing is excellent solo too. You just probe down your targets, bookmark their safespots, and don't engage right away. Name the bookmark by target name, and safespot. Then warp back to switch ship.
If done correctly, you can warp to people's safespots, and all this done by yourself.
(Of course it requires some patience, but waiting for someone at their own safespot can be a lovingly sharing experience).

I would also like to add that a stealth bomber can be a very valuable damage dealing in a frigate gang. I like to imagine the look on the other guy's face when he goes from "LOL IR tanking" to "What ARE my structure resists" in a flash. One of my favorite piracy moments right there.

I haven't played with scan probes since they came out on Tranquility, but kept reading threads that said you can no longer scan people in missions. Is that still the case? Stories. |

you have like a 3 % chance to scan them in missions. It is done by chance now.
Safespots are ridiculously easy to probe out Tier 2 BS Lotto

I carry a drone and a scram on my covops, so I can surprise and scram targets if they are aligned in their SS, and also get on the KM

I'd say that for small to mid-sized pirating gangs, the covert ops is one of the most useful ships out there -- assuming you have 3-4 ships that can handle tackling and damage dealing. This is especially true once you've been pirating an area for a while and potential targets are on the lookout for you or your ships. The covops pilot can scan out SS or just setup targets in belts better than any other ship available. Never underestimate the value of surprise and organization in pvp -- if used correctly, the covops gives you an edge in both of these departments.
I'll never forget the time a friend of mine set 3 of us up on a harb and a drake (both in the same corp) that were dueling at a SS. They had almost broken each others tanks by the time we warped in and tackled them. By they time the had put their pants back on, they were in pods... The only thing better was that one of their corpmates warped in to assist in a scorp right after we finished the second bc -- hard to get a nicer setup than that: 2 pvp-fitted BCs and a BS put down quickly and only possible with a covops ship.
Keep in mind that scouting, especially in a covops ship, involves a great deal of player skill and experience as your corpmates are trusting you to evaluate a situation in a short period of time and putting their trust in you when they warp in.
So, yes trying to solo pirate in a covops is useless but any decent gang of belt pirates will be more than happy to have a good covops scout.

Hopping on the recon train too. My arazu can win 1v1 (well almost 1v1) vs. just about any ship given the right circumstances. It may take 5+ minutes, and I probably won't even get the killmail, but even a nighthawk under fire from 3 (npc) bs's and a properly fitted arazu will not last.

I love my Arazu. However I tested it against a Drake and it laughed at my damage. True it couldnt target me but I couldnt kill it. All I could do was annoy it for awhile.

Cov-ops was actually the first T2 ship I ever trained for and for good reason..... I hate to say it but newer players tend to be kinda useless in PvP except as cannon fodder. Not something I was looking forward to. Then it occurred to me, I can be involved in the fight w/o firing a shot. In a cov-ops ship you can be an integral part of a gang w/o having to sacrifice what limited funds you probably have. And while you're leading your mates to their next kill, you have plenty of time to train the requisite skills for being effective in combat. Also , as stated earlier in the thread, it give you your prerequisites for the wide world of Recons And yes, I know the cov-ops cloak is still kinda pricey for a newer player so here's a suggestion. Run it by your corpies, they may like the idea of not having to split their attn. between 2 toons. Everyone pitches in a couple mil a BANG... you're in your cov-ops
