Is there somewhere a fairly simple explanation of the various ship classes. What they are used for; a general synopsis of their attributes and prices etc. Just so I can familiarise myself with all the classes and know what kind of skills route I might want to head down.

Edited by: Alliaanna Dalaii on 11/01/2007 12:39:17 Going down in order of size and then the tech II progressions listed to the right.
Frigate [Tech I] >> Assault Ships [tech II] / Interceptors [tech II] / Interdictors [tech II] / [tech II] Stealth Bombers.
Cruiser [Tech I] >> Heavy Assault Ship [tech II] / Recon Ships [tech II] / Logistic Piece Of Crap [tech suck II]
Battlecruiser [Tech I] >> Command Ships [tech II]
Battleship [tech I] >> Nothing as of yet.
Capital Ships [tech I] (Carriers , Motherships, Titans, Dreadnaughts) >> Nothing as of yet.
There is no SET use for them as such, each ship can be used in a variety of ways. Whether that be NPC'ing or PvP.
But the usual players progression with tech I ships is along the lines of
Cruiser > Battlecruiser > Battleship.
Though if you want to focus FOR something then plan accordingly. Ie if you want to specialise in cruisers then aim for a Heavy Assault Ship (Refered to as a HAC in game and on forums) etc

Bored at work, so I'll answer ... (pvp oriented answer)
any easy option for preliminary results would be browsing the Item Database on this site
T1 Frigs : Cheap, agile and fragile, good to start with, expendable once you've started to build some cash flow, you'll learn the basics of tackling duty in these things
Inties : fast buggers, hard to catch, easy to pop if they get caught, some pack unreasonable firepower. Good at dogfighting other frigates, roaming enemy territory, tackling stuff for your heavy hitters.
Assault Frigs : heavily tanked frigates, decent firepower, trade agility for tank, and often range ... their usefulness is discussed, some love them, some hate them.
covert ops : stealthy frigates for scouting duty/probing/providing warp points for gang. Priceless in pvp
Destroyers : Cheap antifrig platforms, pop when you look at them the wrong way ...
Interdictors : cross between an inty and a destroyer, able to deploy anti warp bubbles.
[To be continued]

That was helpful, thank you, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I wanted some details on each class.
It seems most T2 ships are variations of the frigate and cruiser classes. That's pretty interesting.

T1 Cruiser : general purpose mid size ships, still cheap enough to be used with relative care, versatile and not to be underestimated
Heavy Assault Cruisers : elite cruisers, better tank, better firepower, some are stupidly overpriced
Recon : EW specialised cruisers, some can cloak, some are more geared towards combat.
Logistic ships : healer class ships, often primaried and not too appreciated in pvp

T1 Battlecruisers : Cross breed between a Battleship and a cruiser. Recently been bosted, good tank and firepower, but poor agility makes them vulnerable to Battleship and Battleship weapons ... Can use gang modules to enhance your fleet.
Command ships : 2 versions, one acting as a Heavy Assault Battlecruiser following the "assault pattern", the other specialises in gang modules to make your teammates more efficient, both versions pack great tank, firepower varies between ships
Battleship : FrontLine ship, fleet fodder, heavy, tough, hard hitting and slow as bricks ...
Capital ships : an entirely different story ...
