What is the advantage of joining corporations? I hear that some of them give out jobs to the members. Since I am new, do small corporations (most likely can't do large ones yet) give any advantage over just running missions? Can you group with corp members to do agent missions? If you are given a job by the corp do you gain anything gamewise like money or items or anything? It seems to me corps are only for PVP'ing and you have to be in a large corp to really have any space to protect. Any info would be great. Thanks!

Corps are 100% player driven, you need to keep that in mind.
Obvisouly, being in a corp helps as you generally have a player base that is interested in the same thing as you, be it running missions, mining, pvp, trading, whatever. So if you need help with some thing, its usualy a corp chat away.
As for corps handing out jobs and paying for them, well, thats totally up to the corp and how the CEO/Director runs his shop.

Edited by: River Torrent on 11/01/2007 16:23:55 Edit for SP
When I first joined Eve I was hung up on corporations, I work for a corporation in real life, I didn't want a job in a game!
Just think of corporations in Eve as guilds in other games, they are all a group of like minded people playing the game together, sometimes for the greater (common) goal, other times just to make some ISK.
I would suggest joining a corp that has plenty of characters wih plenty of ingame time - large or small doesn't matter, you need knowledge of this game!
Got to the recruiting forum or the recruitment channel in game, find a corp that you like, join it and see what happens. There's not contract to sign, and if you don't like what you find, then move on find a new corp.
Contact me in game if you want to discuss further
Thanks

In your time in Eve, you'll always be in a corporation.
You'll start off in a NPC corporation, which doesn't do a great deal except give you a corp channel to hang out and chat in. Everytime you leave a player created corporation, you'll end up back in a NPC corporation.
You can apply to any player-created corporation in Eve, no matter what your age - it's upto them if they actually accept you though.
These corporations might specialise in PVP, mission running, mining, trading, industry, scamming, piracy, mercenary work, etc. Or they could do a mix of it all. A player created corporation will have goals and structure (hopefully!) - and if you're helping towards those goals then they should be helping you out. Be it with friendship, advice, modules, ships or even cold, hard ISK.
If you're in a corporation and you're not hanging out / ganging up with your corp mates, then it seems kinda pointless.

I find the big alliances don't often frequent the recruitment channel in game but rather the recruitment forum. Seems to be mostly smaller corps frequenting the recruitment channel )and spamming it) but you get the chance to speak one-on-one with a recruiter.

Eve University, or the more specialized Trader's Academy are good places to start if you don't know where else to go. I think there are PVP-focused training corps around but I couldn't tell you their names. |

Eve University would be a very nice corporation for you to start out in if you are new. You asked about jobs, In EVE University there are instructors who run missions, mining operations etc., I'm sure they would let you keep some of the isk you earned from bounties or loot doing classes with them.
You'd get to do things with other students and get help with all your questions.
If it sounds like fun, here's a link to their forums where they tell how to join:

Corporations are usually based around a core group of players. Sometimes these people know each other from real life, sometimes they have just played together a long time before (EVE or some other games), sometimes they just came to be friends online while playing EVE and decided to establish a corporation. How a corporation is run is totally up to this group. Some corporations have each memeber perform a specific role or accomplish some task. For example, as an industrial corp they can ask to contribute an hour worth of mining each week into corp wallet, or haul something somewhere, or refuel a POS, or spend 2 hours each week recruiting people. Other corporations are freelance. You have no responsibilities unless you take initiative yourself to get some. You just log on and play whenever you want to and do whatever you want to. This style of running a corporation has an upside in that its players enjoy the maximum amount of freedom when they play. But this kind of corporation is least likely to achieve anything that requires group effort in game. What style you like best is completely up to you.
Beware of corporations that are scams. In these corporations the CEO or whoever is at the head eventually just leaves with corp assets. A good indication of such corp is if someone is asking you to contribute ore or money into common pot and promising you that he or she will do something of common benefit with that money, but nothing happens for a long time.
Corporation do give "advantage over just running missions". Playing with a group of people is generally more fun. You get to learn new things from other people that playing alone you would have never thought of. Some corporations provide free or discount ships and modules for their members. Some provide sign-up bonuses. Corporations are basically groups of friends that talk to each other while playing and occassionally play together. You find a group that you feel you belong with and stick to them.
Don't forget that leaving a corp is very easy. It takes only 24 hours. And the recruitment channel and forum is always full of corps looking for new members.
