The science tree has about a billion skills that seem to be involved in BP research and production. I'm confused as to whether you need Minmatar Starship Engineering, for example, to make a Probe. Or whether you need Laser Physics to make a Small Energy Turret.
Why does this game throw "means of acquiring blueprints" together with "making actual things out of those blueprints" together? Why shouldn't these be separate professions?

Those skills are involved in tech 2 BPO acquisition and research, T1 stuff doesn't require them.

The answer to your topic is: Industry to level 1. ----- n-1. ??? n. Profit!

Haha.
I would say the only absolutely essential skill for industry is Production Efficiency V, without that you will never be competitive. If you never get into T2 production there are not that many essential skills. You also don't necessarily need science skills if you buy BPCs or are in an industrial corp that can provide them.
Since you're still in Pator Tech School I recommend you apply to join Trader's Academy, they can guide you through these issues and before too long you'll have a clear sense of what your goals are. |

I agree, is confising. The descriptions kind of suggest that you actually need skills like "Gallentean Starship Engineering" to build an Atron frigate. But you could build it with industry I. The starship engi skill is only to use research agents and get a chance to win something like a Taranis BPO (AKA T2 version of the Atron).
Usually the produccer is also a researcher, as the dream of every T1 producer is to win that profitable T2 BPO. But yeah, I would like to see all the T2-Lottery Related skills on a different tree. Something like a "Research" tree. |

And build them.

And what about skill "Research"?

As was said,
To make t1 stuff you need industry 1.
All other skills affect how much material you need or how many factories you can operate.
A lot of the skills (like gallentean starship engineering) are needed to make t2 goodies.

Keep in mind that you may want decent Research skill (not the specialty stuff) if you're going to be improving the efficiency of your BPOs a lot. On the other hand, how many laboratories are you going to be able to afford/book? ;p
