I've been playing EVE for about 18 hours now and I have no idea what to do with my time in order to earn more ISK and progress to bigger ships, so I'm wondering what a good path to go down is? I've made about 5m ISK from mining and doing security missions etc, but I spent most of that on a destroyer ship and some other stuff. I've heard hauling is a good way of making money but I'd have no idea what kind of ship or build to use and I'd like to get into the mining or even the combat scene but again, I have no idea what ore to mine or whats good to do etc. Some help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

Thanks! The best advice that I can give is that you are asking all the wrong questions and looking at this game from what I would call a flawed perspective. You sound much like I did after my first 18 hours so I will give you advice as if I were talking to an 18 hour old version of myself.
Eve is not a linear progression MMO. Eve is a sandbox. As such there is no one path nor any best path through the game. Further bigger is not always better and often can very much work against you. If you are still playing this game 10 years from now you will likely still be flying cheaply fit small and medium T! ships on a very regular basis.
Knowledge of the game trumps skill points and equipment every time in this game. So you are going to need to learn the game for multiple reasons. My main point is that this early on having a broad range of experiences to get a flavor for various aspects of the game is important.
In other words don't focus on making isk. Focus instead on having fun and figuring out what you like. You can make isk doing anything in this game so don't ask what can I do to make isk tell us what you enjoy doing and ask us how to make isk doing that.
As far as progressing into bigger ships I am going to recommend that you stick to small and medium hulls for a while and avoid larger hulls for a good long time.
My recommendation to you would be to try out the various career agents and then when you finish them do the SoE epic arc. That will give you some decent isk and get you some experience on introductory aspects to ship piloting.
Also the best ship in Eve is friendship so make friends as you will most likely want to have vets to ask questions of as you go. |

There is no such thing as progressing to bigger ships - when you create your account you can already fly some of the best ships in the game (just not very well ).
As far as isk making goes, the best way is to steal it from other players. "Best" meaning most fun, of course, not necessarily most profitable - although theft can be very profitable if you are good/lucky at it. There are many ways to steal people's isk and assets. The most straightforward for a new player is to probe down mission runners using combat scanner probes and loot their wrecks. Warp away if you start taking too much damage.
The second best way is to buy PLEX using real money and sell it on the market for isk. Basically grinding for your isk in-game tends to be just as boring as working for your money out of game, but most people can make a far better hourly wage in the real world than they can in New Eden.
Frankly though, I'll stick with stealing my isk, since spending a lot of money on video games is pretty foolish.

I started off making ISK in relic sites and I met someone in Arnon that was interested in any DED sites I come across; and later on I could do the lower rated sites on my own.

http://go-dl.eve-files.com/media/1003/EVECAREERSGUIDE.pdf Is the best graphical overview off all the different ways to make isk in eve.
So I suggest trying out any that interest you, fun factor is the most important thing, this is a game after all. Don't sweat the low turnout at first, whatever career (or careers) you choose, there will be a learning curve to getting good.
If you don't find any of these methods fun, then buy plex. That way you can spend more time shooting things.
I just want to get a plex as fast as i can so i dont have to worry about resubbing, 15 dollars is Cat litter and Food for my cat, or 2 Grams of Weed, i'd rather spend it on that then on this game--Rogue Mime

What helped me a lot at the beginning, was removing ISK from the equation for some months (ISK from buddy program, plus PLEX). I parked that ISK on a second char located in Jita, whom I use as "banker". I only keep the ISK for daily business in Tipa's wallet and inject cash from the "bank" when needed. This prevents expensive misclicks, but more important it allows me to strictly manage expenses.
In EvE bigger is not automatically better but just a different play style; all play styles and ship sizes/types are equally important and used. Also more expensive equipment "gear" gives diminishing return on ISK, hence beside pure raw performance you need to consider cost effectiveness of your fit in regards to its purpose. If your ship is full of high priced officer or dead space mods, your ship may perform 10% better for 100x the price, and everybody and their mother is hunting you to grab your shiny loot. But even if your ship may be slightly better, winning or losing in EvE is 80% a player skill topic.
But back to your question... I would recommend doing all the career agent missions (F12) and then the Sisters of EvE epic arc in Arnon, this will provide you with learning opportunities, some nice ships and a couple million ISK. Try out everything and find what you like and then think about how to make ISK out of that, ... exploration/scanning is not a bad path.

If you want a fun and engaging way to make isk which allows and indeed encourages travel to all areas of New Eden then I heartily recommend exploration. With just a handful of skillpoints you not only get to travel, but also earn a healthy income. I regularly make 50-150m per evening just doing relic sites in nullsec and wormhole space with just 2m skillpoints (it can be done with less). The added bonus is that this can be done in ships that are exceptionally cheap and easily replaceable. It can also be exciting when you're being hunted!
It's a good stepping stone into combat exploration and you can train while you earn plus the skills and experience you acquire can be put to good use not only in PVE situations but also PVP.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. |

2 Good ways for nice cash:
1: Lowsec exploration, try to go after the relic sites rather than the data sites.
2: Ninja salvaging! You can make ALOT of money doing this. Best way I do it is with a Magnate frigate with 4 warp core stabilizers, 3 salvagers, a microwarp drive, and a shield extender. I then go out to faction warfare areas in lowsec and loot the wrecks there for lots of isk (Usually about 2 mil/wreck). You learn the mechanics of lowsec well and this ship is dirt cheap if you lose it. Just mind you, if you loot a yellow wreck, you gain a suspect timer for 15 minutes where people can freely shoot you (I mean, your in lowsec, people try to kill you anyways :P mainly a worry if you go back to highsec with a timer). Tama is a good system as it is a combat hotspot. You can then use your salvagers to salvage T2 wrecks (Shows up as 'Elite wrecks') for t2 salvage which can be worth a bit (You never get suspect timers from salvaging)
If you have any other questions, feel free to mail me!

This one I would recommend if you are just going after Data and Relic sites, however there is room there to fit a salvager and carry salvage drones if you come across anything worth salvaging. If you're having difficulty hacking the sites but scanning them down isn't an issue, you can swap out one or both of the Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I's for Emission Scope Sharpener I's (for Relic / Archaeology sites) or Small Memetic Algorithm Bank I's (Data / Hacking sites).
The whole point of these cheap ships is disposability. By the time you've run one or two lowsec Relic Sites you'll be able to buy a few more and so on - so losing a few won't be so much of an issue. Also make sure you dock regularly and dump loot. You can easily find yourself carrying around 100s of millions of isk before you know it. Don't just limit yourself to lowsec though, wormhole space is infinitely more profitable and you can dip in and out from hisec at will.
If you're going after one particular type of site you can always fit cargo scanner instead of one of the hacking modules to allow you to see what's inside the cans (whether it's worth hacking) before you start.

Why a Magnate? Four low slots allows four Warp Core Stabilizers. Most if the time you'll be hunted by rocket bombers and Asteros, the latter of which will usually carry 2 T2 Warp Scramblers to catch people. I hunt explorers as a hobby and to be honest if I see a Magnate I usually don't bother trying any more :) |

scamming.
seriously, if you just want fast isk and want to skip the newbie isk grind, just scam your first 500mil and buy what you need. You can do about 1bil an hour if you are good at scamming
"Christmas 5bil Giveaway! (3.5b remaining) Any isk you send me, ill send 2x back! Once per player, Send maximum of 500mil, once per player!" pick a few random names in Jita local, congratulate them for winning 200mil isk repeat
dont worry about your reputation ether. Scamming is fairly common in eve and nobody really gives a **** if you scammed jita. They'll only care if you are stealing from blue/corp/alliance

I'd suggest using an alt if you want to scam. It does get you placed on many ignore lists.

Scamming is definitely the best way to get your first five billion ISK.
There's a few very well known scammers that have made much more than that too - Bad Bobby stole almost a trillion ISK, as did Phaser Inc.

I'm about 2 weeks old into this and I realised I am doing things I like instead of worrying about the ISK I'm making.
I started out doing lvl1 and lvl 2 security missions as some Corp members recommended it is important to get my pilot standings up. . I like pew pew so I didn't complain.. in midst of breaks I leave my venture at asteroid belts for 3 or 4 hauls for another 4million and continue... then I realised I shouldn't let the wrecks I made go to waste so I started salvaging...
Now..I'm roaming wormholes in high sec that could easily land me to a 100mil ISK hauls... but I still rotate the things I do... too much of something gets you bored...
So... I think I'd just play the game however I like. Of course I aim to reach a billion ISK in cash (not inclusive of assets ) by month end..but that's just a target to keep myself motivated.
Hit me up in game if you wanna do anything together...! Always looking for new ships. Friendships. |

Scamming and begging are the only way to make large ISK at one day old. Or combine the two and create a begging scam ("CODE killed my mining ship and now I am broke" sort of thing) but do not bother trying it in a newb system no-one else there has money.
- A more conventional route is do all the career agents at more than one school, say one set in each faction space, to get to know EVE better then move all the free ships you get somewhere busy and sell them. Follow this up with the Sister of EVE epic arc.
- Or just semi AFK mine in a Venture for a few weeks. Boring but effective way to get starter ISK. You can even mine the rocks in the career missions you are doing.

In game, begging is just a form of scam anyway.
Another variant is to go to a missioning system and buy a few of a mission objective off contracts (Militants are ideal as everyone that runs missions has an excess of them, usually they are purchaseable at ~2m ISK for 10). Then intentionally lose a ship - a cruiser is ideal - with 10 Militants in cargo and a bad but not terrible PVE fit - by asking someone from CODE to attack you.
Then, post a 'Want to Sell' contract for another ten Militants at a ridiculous price (500 million works well). Do this in a mission hub station like Osmon or Apanake.
Start linking the contract but say "Hey guys need help. A ganker blew me up (link lossmail) and now I'm going to fail my mission. Don't care about the ISK but can't lose the standings. Buying replacement Militants 500m". Link the contract, but reword it from want to sell to want to buy.
Someone WILL fall for it.
Send them an EVEmail saying "Good fight" afterward and then post the same scam again (you do have more Militants right)?

Buy PLEX for real money and sell it in game for around 1.2 billion. For very new player it is in my opinion best way. It will give you capital to try out a lot of things in EVE and find your own way to earn ingame currency. The way you like it. Good luck. |

Be aware that the latest patch has brought in big undocumented mechanics changes that whilst mildly annoying for veterans, actually seem to make mission running at higher levels far less viable for newer players. Changes include ships spawning instantly instead of being triggered in many new player friendly missions and a change in NPC drone aggro that makes drones useless in PvE for many low SP players. |

Look at one of the newbie friendly corps sponsored by the major power blocs like KarmaFleet and Pandemic Hoard.
They have free skillbook programs and a solid Ship Replacement Policy along with newbie 'ISK Showers' and plenty of space to set yourself up in for future riches.
Essentially, on your first big fleet you out yourself as a complete newbro and everyone in fleet sends you ISK.
