Old account, but never played much. Trying to see about getting into BS. I don't have any BS to V yet, nor large turrets. I'm trying to figure out what the best BS V/Large Turret V will be. I'd like to be able to be useful in PVP and PVE with these skills. I can pretty much run marauders, just need BS V. Was hoping to hear the thoughts of people on these forums as I don't want to waste a month and a half! |

as things stand projectiles and the machariel Probably do minny bs 5 first and gal bs should be pretty alright at 4. currently the most used pvp bs by far. zKill has it at 2,258 kills in the last week, next is rattlesnake at 1,455, and then the typhoon with 846. And the mach is the best lv4 bs imo.
vargur is something of a beast too, but overall I'm not too hot on marauders.

I've heard great things about the machariel, but I have also heard that some of the Amarr BS can be extremely effective (best tank, armor tanked, most cap, high dmg). And then I hear that Gallente BS are extremely strong too and I'm honestly at a loss as to what I should do. Obviously whichever BS I choose I'll want to go with their respective weapons, which means if I want to be effective with machariel I have to go minmatar. Just having a hard time deciding what would be best. The only thing I'm certain of at this point is I don't want caldari BS V. I would very much like to be able to fight sleepers in L4 wormholes as well. I'm not sure how much I'll be mission running - I will likely be in null space a fair amount. |

Id recommend gallente for pvp and pve. Minmatar are very good pvp ships but are not ideal for beginners and not the best for PvE either. You cant go wrong with the dominix.

Minmatar and Gallente are both good choices, although Minmatar is the one to learn first. Gallente then opens some good pirate options.
Maelstrom and Vargur for PvE. Typhoon Navy and Panther for PvP.
Once you have Gallente BS as well it opens up the Machariel and Vindicator. Both good for PvP and PvE.
Sin is the only Gallente BS that is seriously used in PvP as far as I know.

Minnie and Gallente are very good suggestions if you want to do both PVP and PVE. Still the Paladins are incredible for PVE when used in pairs but for soloing the crown goes to the Machariel. |

Wouldn't it make more sense, if I want gallente purely for pirate, to just get Gallente BS IV? I definitely get why you would consider minmatar is the top choice for BS V/large proj V. It opens up the best dreadnaught apparently, and also has arguably the best marauder, arguably the best pirate faction, and one of the better black ops.
That being said, I also really like amarr. Amarr gives you bhaalgorn, which just looks sick, paladin, which seems to measure up fairly well to vargur, redeemer, which is also arguably the best black ops, and nightmare (not really sure if it's good or not, but it does get a nice speed boost and 150% increased dmg, the highest of ANY BS).
Gallente, on the other hand, gives vindicator, which I honestly don't like that much unless it's doing solo pvp. It gives rattlesnake, which is great, but I think rattlesnake would be highly effective even with gallente BS IV/caldari BS IV, and then machariel, which gives a 10% falloff bonus for the gallente BS V - lastly, you get barghast, which might have a really great niche role but is by no means mainstream. Obviously gallente BS V gives bonuses to all BS, as well as access to kronos (considered by most the worst marauder), but I don't really see a good reason to go gallente V.
I guess my real issue then is I'm torn between amarr and minmatar. It would be nice to know what people think of nightmare/bhaalgorn, as these are the two ships that I'm not sure of for the Amarr BS. |

That's kinda like asking someone what their favorite color is. You will get a lot of different replies. I have Cal / Gal to 5 and thought that was the cats meow. Then I finally did Amarr and really loved that. Next week it may be Minmatard... Bottom line is this... It all depends on what you do with it and how you fit and fly it. (manually I hope).

The guy you quoted is in karma fleet and has most his info wrong.
"Sin is the only Gallente BS that is seriously used in PvP as far as I know" ..... What
Amarr are good fleet ships, but for solo I find amarr to be not as good as minmatar or gallente. That being said if you are skilled you can manage to get a ship to do pretty much anything. Also you are locked to EM and Thermal damage, which again may or may not be so good for PvE, it depends on what you are fighting. If you are going to be running in a lot of big fleets though then amarr are good as long as your alliances uses armour doctrines.
The reason Gallente are so good is drones give fully selectable damage, you can snipe with sentries, and drones are immune to EWAR. This makes them ideal for PvE or PvP.
There is no really wrong choice though to be honest, battleship V on any of the races is a worthwhile train.
To give you a more accurate answer you'd need to be more specific. For instance what type of PvP are you looking at doing, and what area of space you are intending to live in and which rats you will be fighting.

High skill requirements for the Nightmare.
Btw, no ship will be the best choice. You have to decide what your most important requirements are and select the ship by that.
I would suggest putting off the choice for a bit until you really know what you want. Otherwise you may find you totally made the wrong choice, for what you really need.

Which is why the dominix is a good choice, it is a jack of all trades, it excels in pretty much every role and is dirt cheap to replace if you take into account insurance.
Also I'd second Val'Dore with the armageddon as a solid second choice, it is very close to the dominix in terms of its performance.
But yes if you have a specific role in mind, then rather than a jack of all trades you can get a ship that will excel at that role (for instance the nightmare is very good in amarr space due to the rat resists). But for that you'd need to be more specific.

I liked the Nightmare and Mach for PVE, and the Geddon/Apoc Navy/Mach, and Redeemer for Pvp.
The choice of your PVP BS should be situational, and often pre chosen by org doctrine. Of course, to use a BS or to go smaller, is also a situational choice as well.
The OP asked:
Quote:I'm trying to figure out what the best BS V/Large Turret V will be
The point is that there are none, its all situational. And until the player determines more of what their situation will be, you can't give them a best choice,
...Other than your own, which means nothing since your situation is not the same.
As far as:
Quote:I'd like to be able to be useful in PVP and PVE with these skills. I can pretty much run marauders, just need BS V. Was hoping to hear the thoughts of people on these forums as I don't want to waste a month and a half!
I still suggest holding off until you learn more of what you want. Everyone one will have an opinion, and rarely are they the same, since we are all in different situations.
The best choice is to get all your BS and Turrets to V eventually, but in what order is dependent on your personal choice.
I say work on getting your cruiser skills for all races to V, and play around with different BS at BS IV and Turrets IV with good meta 4 turrets on TQ and Sisi.
Eventually it will become clear for you and you will know and won't need to ask.

Makes sense. I am actually training gallente cruiser V right now. I was thinking the ishtar would pretty much take care of any cruiser needs, and I've heard the t3 gallente cruiser is quite good. Essentially, my thought process is this. Specialize in tech 2 frigates (gallente), tech 2 cruisers (gallente), and then tech 2 BS (undecided). I'll also pick up tech 3 subsystems skills along the way. I have a lot of support skills I want to flesh out, but right now I am specced perception/willpower. Once I drop the perc/willpower spec I won't be returning to it for probably a year. I have fairly good drone skills - they aren't perfect - light drones 5, drones 5, drone avionics 5, advanced drone avionics 2, drone interfacing 4, med drones 5, heavies 3, sentries 3, sharpshooting 4. Those should be good enough until I get around to improving them. My hope is that I have a class of ship for every need - frig/cruiser/battleship. I chose not to do BC because they seem to not be used much. I don't really have a reason for skipping destroyer, so I'd be open to training that if there was a good reason to.
The goal with my first set of skill training in perc/will is to make it so I can fly the ships I want when I want to. After that, I will switch to int/mem and work on things like cov-ops, interceptors, getting support skills maxed out, getting armor skills up, logistics, recon ships, interdictors, finishing t3 subsystems for gallente, getting propulsion skills maxed, getting electronic warfare skils up, etc. All of this training will take me about 500 days, and I'd like to get to the int/mem spec fairly quickly as I especially want to be able to use cov-ops and logi ships quickly. I'd like to streamline things so I'm not wasting time on skills I won't use. As far as ships I like, I really don't think I'll mind any ship as long as it does what I want it to effectively. In the case of BS, I want to be able to do C4/C5 wormhole things, possibly mission run, and have at least a few ships that can be highly effective in pvp.
So anyways, this is the reason I'm asking about BS/large weapons skills. I want to train 1 set of skills right now, as I don't plan to get back to training any other sets for at least a year. I've decided I want minmatar/amarr, just not sure which one I want more. I'm mainly here to see what people think, as I know many of you have years of experience flying these types of ships.

Ah, the old days.
Eve was a lot more fun when I had so much I still wanted to train for. Always felt like I was working toward something. To be honest, every game I've played was so much more fun when I had more ahead of me than I had behind me. And some players want to reduce that in Eve.
Eve has a lot of skilling you can do. Take it in stride and don't wish for it to be done too soon. Getting there is where the fun is to be honest. At 150+ mil SP on two of my main characters I can tell you that it can be hard to keep interest in this game alive once you get up there.
Late game fun for those of us who are high SP but don't have enough free time or isk to keep playing the group based null sec game is hard to come by. Eve really caters to expensive and time consuming group based late gameplay which leaves those of us more suited toward solo late gameplay out in the cold.

Ignore him. You can only really win at PVP if you fly the flashiest, most expensively-fitted ships. It's a literal 'I WIN' button for EVE!
