Ok did a quick fire test. I had my main and alt in Drakes. Both with lvl 4HM and lvl 4BC skills. Both using 7 x 7 x arby and xr3200 launchers. circling at 45k, both have good shield skills. Loads 2 x Scourge 2 x Thunderbolt 2 x Widowmaker 1 x Havoc
Karl 2x largeSE T2, 2 x invulT2, 1x EM resist amp T2, 1 x Therm resit amp T2 Low 2 x BCU 2 x SPR
Alt 1 x large SB t2, 1 x large SE t2, 2x EM 1x Kinetic and 1 x Heat resist amp T2s low 2 x BCS t2 2 x PDS T2
switched in invuls and let rip. Both did well, Karl never below 50% shield, alt went quicker, but when switche SB on regained %. Had to switch Alts SB on and off a few times to conserve cap. After about 24 minutes got bored. Each fired over 4 x complete loads of HM. Karl maintained shield at about 45 - 50%, Cap at 60% Alt shield 50% conserving cap ended up with 45%cap

No, I'm trying to work out best set up for shields. Just thought I'd test them under fire

With the overabudance of cap drainers you're probably better off with setup that doesn't require cap to keep the shield up, if the performance is otherwise similar. Just a though...
(of course that's in situation where you can indeed utilize about all slots you have for a tank >>;

There's a HUGE difference between HM4 with arby/xr3200 launchers, and HM5, HM spec 4, with T2 launchers.
Altho you were fighting yourself very poorly. When you fire each of the 4 damage types, you need to look and see which did the most damage against their tank, and swap to it in all launchers.Your lowest resistance was probably 60-65% in kinetic on Karl, and 70% exp on the alt, with therm being just slightly better.
Alt would've wanted to swap to kinetic, and karl would wanted to use kinetic(due to dmg bonus) or exp. On the passive tank, hitting all 7 launchers worth of kinetic could've been the difference in that tank breaking. If you had HM5, alone, it could've likely done it. T2 launchers and HM spec 3-4 would've pushed your DPS enough, but you ship's value would've probably doubled or tripled because of insane launcher prices.

Good point there, I didn't think of that. Is this the same for Rats? Finding out which damage thay are weak in and using that missile? Or should I use mainly kinetic due to my bonus with maybe a couple of launchers firing EM against their shields? My problem is, that even though I have good skills (about 25 million skill points for main and alt each) I have hardly played for a year. I knew that this was a game that I liked and would come back to from time to time. With Eve you can still gain skills even when you are not on line. This makes getting the lvl 5 skills more bearable, lol, if you know that you can't play for weeks at a time. The longest I've not played is 3 months, but I religously kept up skill points, even though I concentrated on mining skills for a couple of months. Maked mining for isk a lot easier. Now that I am back a lot has changed. This makes the game a lot more exciting, and frustrating, for me lol

It depends on the rats. Rats normally have a 10 point spread between 1 resists and another. Gurista and Serpentis are best w/ kin while angel is probably best w/ kin on a drake due to the bonus.

Perhaps this will help you. I use a formula to compare negetative bonuses to positive ones by converting the negative to an equavalent positive.
formula: bonus% / (1 - bonus%) + 1
Example: Damage controll II : 12.5% resists to all V's PDU II : shield recharge + 8.5% and shield capacity 5%
Converting the DC is as simple as : 0.125 /(1-0.125) + 1 = 1.142 approx
now for the PDU's shield recharge: a) 0.085 /(1-0.085) + 1 = 1.092 approx adding the shields capacity & recharge ( the shields bonus of 5% is already a positive ) b)1.05 * 1.092 = 1.147
so the result is the PDU's shield regen (14.7%) is slightly better than the DC's resists (14.2%)... not to mention the other bonuses on the pdu's including more shields to last longer.
