Well, with the introduction of factional warfare coming up, i thought of a few things.
To promote specialization and more role playing, would it be good if you could have *some* race specific skills, ones that help you in a certain region, for example Gallente would get a special "Hybrid Efficientcy" skills?
Or your race would train skills slightly faster if they were the ones normally trained by that race? I dunno just some ideas.

Not more skills but perhaps more race specific bonuses, like you get to learn faster using your races ships and traditional weapons or such..
For limitless possibilities, you need Infinite Dreams

How about no ? I was free to choose whatever race I liked and combine it with any race's ships and weapons without any penalty and the ability to be on par with anyone else after bringing those skills to the max.
I've made this decision already 2004, some 2003. Don't mess with it. If you want race specific bonusses, then maybe dress like a girl for gallente males, but not something important.

Indeed, half of what attracted me to this game was how open ended it was. I liked caldari when I started. I flew a caracal. I mined in an osprey.
I got into pvp and woah crap, I kept dying to thoraxes. Now how unfair would it have been to trap me into caracals if I wanted the most bang for my SP? I wanted to fly thoraxes. So I trained for them the same way I trained for caracals. That = makes perfect sense. -----

Only if it was more like an implant (permanent one) and replaceable with any other race's by going to their starter school. (perhaps having a standings requirement of some sort). Any bonus would have to be small. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

I've suggested Race specific things, to give some sort of diversity to the races other than attribute points, but TBH, I don;t see it happening any time soon.

Its possibly a good idea, as my understanding of factional warefare is fighting out the old conflicts which are starting to resurface, which just doesn't feel right when, as a glorious minmatar, I take on the amarrian scum with my drake to kick 7 kinds of snot out of his thorax. However a rifter formation Vs an escorted ammarrian indy convoy (Free the slaves!) with a few apocs and such....

No, sorry but I don't like it. The great thing about EVE is that you can ungimp yourself if you feel you are for some reason. Making it so you can't do that, since the only point that choice could be made was at character creation, would lend too much weight to these "it's great being blah blah, isn't it?" goofball posts.
I could get behind it if it was more forgiving. For instance if it could be gotten around by aligning yourself with some other faction to make whatever bonus available.
I just don't care for games that allow you to create a character that you may not feel good about latter during character creation. Which is very likely since everyone is a noob at some point. So far EVE is just the oposite. I'd rather leave it that way.

http://myeve.eve-online.com/updates/indevelopment.asp "Factional Warfare
We want the major factions to go to war and enable the players to pledge allegiance to any of these factions and fight for them, allow them to rise through the faction ranks and be awarded for their accomplishments."
My understanding is that players would be able to freely choose the faction for which they wish to fight regardless of their initial factional alignment, so it's still open-ended.

Right. But OP's suggestion tied it to race. Something you can only pick once.

I think the OP used the term "race" loosely , since he gave an example using Gallente, which is a faction.
