With the constant flood of whine threads wanting the game to be changed from EVE into something... not-EVE, I think this forum could use a little preemptive defense. We need an easily referenced list of common topics and the usual responses from EVE defenders and maybe links to CCP quotes or devs taking a position on said topics. This could be stickied at the top of the forums as a Read Me Before You Post topic to hopefully head off some of these spurious posts we see every day.
The idea being that when someone makes an, "EVE is fundamentally flawed because I can't AFK mine in high sec" thread or something similar, we could just respond with "Read the forum guide, nubbin!". Constantly trying to explain to each and every monkey that comes along that EVE is less forgiving than other games will get tiring. I'm afraid the community at large and maybe even CCP will eventually get beat down enough that they'll start giving in on the constant stream of oh noes!! suicide ganks, I got scammed, my ores was stolen, CCP please hold my hand topics.
So what do you think? Would it be worth it?
possible examples:
Before You Post Suggesting the Game Should Be Changed Answer these questions: - Could you have fit a tank rather than cargo expanders? - Could you have gotten friends to help make your endevors safer? - Could you have researched the person who scammed you better? - Could you have employed Warp To Zero instead of autopilot to make your trip safer? - Could you have done anything differently within the game rules that would have changed the outcome of the situation you are complaining about? If so, the game does not need to be changed!
Before You Use the Words Griefing or Exploit Do you even know how they apply to EVE? - The basic premise of EVE is that other players can effect your game play. Being suicide ganked is not an exploit. Recycling alts to do it is. - Stealing ore from your jetcan is not an exploit or griefing. Being constantly bumped while high-sec mining is. See harrasment here. - Getting scammed is not an exploit or griefing. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it more than likely is. See scamming here. - If you were scammed via GTCs did you follow the rules in this thread?
etc.
Yes, alot of this is already existing in some form throughout the eve-o site or elsewhere, however, it's a bit unorganized. My thought is that rounding up all this sort of common information could have two very positive effects: 1) Hopefully reduce the amount of whine and/or change EVE threads, or at least give an easily refered to reference to defend against the daily influx of misconceptions that plague this forum. 2) Possibly become a one-stop-shopping for new player important reading so they have a better understand of what EVE is about. A good "heads up" sort of collection.
I don't pretend to know everything about EVE or have a complete understanding of CCP's position on all topics, hence the suggestion that it be a community project. A constantly refined sort of topic. Wiki style if you will. In other words, I'm not suggesting that I'm an authority on these topics, but I'm volunteering to do the editing if it is felt it would be worth it. Or is this thread already meeting all those requirements?
Thoughts?
