I control a very small corp 15-50 members and we are working very hard to build a Mining POS/BoP in a 0.3 system but I am wondering if its even worth trying to build one because of the constant threat of being wiped out by a pirate raid?
Question to low sec alliances/corporations/Pirates: What does it take to insure/secure a place in low sec?

if you set one up just right it'll be too much trouble for most low sec pirats to go after.

But of course that would require alot more weaponry correct and a bigger station?

It is possible to make small mining POS also 'pointy' enough so most people just passing by dont bother with taking it out. When dreadnaughts come it will fall ofcource (but if you are willing to fight for it you can make them pay in blood for it when they come to finish the job after reinfoced mode). But then again, dreadnaught in siege mode is relatively easy prey for your corp if you just get organized enough and your POS is able to discourage their support gang from warping into POS range.
When you time your strontsium well it might be possible also to gain timezone advantage and boost it above 50% shields before attackers arrive to finish the job.
So all in all, small POS in low sec is not quarnteed loss, unless you manage to step on someones toes bad enough so they want to kill your POS enough.
But take my information with slight grain of salt. I do not have experience with low sec POS'es. Have used them only in 0.0 and in high sec so far.

Thanks for the info any other opinions would be great to hear as well i'll keep planning on a bigger pos to be able to support an expansive defense array.
Also any opinions on a High Sec pos would be nice to hear as well :)
Thanks for any help you can provide me :D

Generally, as long as you put a decent number of turrets up you'll scare off anyone who's not flying a dread or very determined.
A popular tactic seems to be to use a minmatar POS and artillery cannons loaded with various ammo types. Very slow rate of fire but the sheer amount of damage delivered in one blow tends to send bships into structure or insta-pop them. Depends on the number of guns you put there ;)
I'm not sure about exact setups, but it's good to have a mix of turret sizes, warp disruptors/webbers, EW (sensor dampeners & ECM), etc. The badder it looks, the less attention it gets.
Originally by: Jim McGregor I felt the disturbance... it was like a million voices suddenly stopped whining for a second. Unfortunantly it then continued.

As far as hi-sec POSs go, the only real reason to build one is if you have enough BPOs to use up all the research/copying slots and you can keep up with the production useing the manufactureing arrays.
From my understanding, you have to have a POS in a system with stations if you want to use the research facilities. You cant put a refineing array in hi-sec so that messes up any plans of eaisly striping a hi-sec system.
My corp is currently trying to get one person's standing up enough to put a hi-sec POS up. We are planing on just haveing a small tower and puting a lab, the basic manufactureing arrays (to be onlined when needed) and a hanger, might put a gun or two.
I am thinking about putting a low-sec POS just recently. Like Rigsta said, I was planing on haveing a good mix of deffencive parts depending on what fit after a refineing array, hanger, and ship mantance array is onlined. -------------------------------------------------- EvE is a sand box. Build a sand castle and beg someone to come destroy it just so you can have the fun of building it up again.

The real problem with POSes in low-sec with a small corp is keeping them fed. You've got to factor in the price of fuel, and the logistics behind getting it there. Also, if you're just using it as a mining post, you may find that it is hardly worth your time. POS refineries are expensive and have really crummy yields for everything but ice. They might be a valid option for 0.0 areas where hauling the ore five or six jumps is the only alternative, but for low-sec you'd likely do better just hauling to a station.
If you're really bent on getting a POS, put up enough weaponry to discourage passerbys and try not to anger your neighbors. I used to operate POSes, and the guns only saw action when a pirate decided to chase me when I ran from belts. Needless to say, I never felt bad about looting _those_ cans...

Thanks for all the info all again I really appreciateit. :D I apoligize if this is the same question you hear over and over again lol.
So to support a big enough defensive array to defend a POS enough i probably would need a large POS?
Because we scouted out a god system fairly close to high sec but witha couple of ice fields in it and so far no poses populating it thats why i was wondering if it would be worth trying to survive out there.
Now on high sec poses: So it wouldn't be worth building a station in a system that has no station?
Because just like the low sec station idea i have found some systems with ice fields and no stations currently residing there all these areas are 0.5 systems so thats why i asked in the beginning.
From what i hear its back and forth about wether or not you can setup your own refinery with your station in high sec. But if you can't setup a refinery to refine all of your minerals then it would be kinda moot to build a pos in a system with an ice field if all you can do is hual and not refine it. >.>;

Minnie tower, 6-9 hardners, 4-6x med artilleries, pair of small autocannons, some sensor damps and a few webbers. Might have to play some online/offline games to use a refineing array.
Most empire pirates can't muster the logistics or the drive to take down a well setup tower.

Put just enough defences on the POS to drive off a few battleships but not much more. The simple fact is that if someone really wants to take your POS out there are no amount of defences you can mount that will protect it (it's main defence is infact what combat ability your corp can field).
That said taking out even a small POS takes time so most people simply won't bother, especially when there is no real gain from killing one. Just make sure your corp doesn't do anything that draws attention to yourself and it (e.g. sitting in a POS bubble smacking locals or local pirates, bragging about how great the moon minerals are etc) and you'll be fine. Oh and it also helps if your POS is in a system a little off the beaten track.
Not being noticed and not giving people an incentive to attack it are your biggest defence.

So, if you can't defend it anyway (if you have a very small corp), and if you don't draw any attention, would it be profitable for a solo-player to start a POS in low-sec or 0.0?
Or is that just a stupid newbie question? Is it just not done, cause to keep it running and to earn a profit from it you really need more players working together? I was thinking about moon mining. But I have 0 experience in the whole POS thing, never even seen one :) Just thinking about my future. Where I want to take myself in this game.

Edited by: Wild Rho on 24/01/2007 14:44:48 Yes it would. Plenty of people run their own POS and make a decent profit with no problems. Ultimatly there is always some risk, someone may just be bored enough to sit there with a dread and shoot it however if you keep a low profile you should be fine.
Your biggest risk is running the fuel to the POS and the products back (depending where you set it up) from pirates on gates, but if you use your brains these won't be major problems.

So can you build a refinery for a pos in high sec?
Been finding some conflicting debates about this.
Thanks :)

So a solo player could run their own station :) sweet thanks for the info guys and all the help on this its been a great learnign experiance and i gues i'll have to work on my ship skills alittle more before i commit my corp to doing this thing. But for a solo player you can survive gate campers if you focus on appropriate skills and use the right equipment on your haulers to survive a concentrated attack and since the addition of warp to 0km its kinda nice too :)

I believe you can anchor a refinery in high. Unforunately with the maximum refine efficiency being 75% you're better off using a station.
However, buying moon minerals and doing reactions or researching/copying bpos can be very profitable.
To anchor a pos in 0.4 to 0.7 you need a faction standing of 4.0 to 7.0 and you need charters from the faction in additon to other fuel requirements. Having said that I have around 2 years worth of charters in one of my hangars.
In general I wouldn't recommend a small pos in low sec as they are easily destroyed by a gang of properly fitted battleships (slow but do-able). Think about at least a medium pos. A medium pos shield can cope with a lot more dps than a small and has a lot more shield. Cool an orange sig |

Nice!
Although now that brings up a new question and i apoligize to ask so many questions lol i have tried to use the search option but i tend to never find what i search for >.<
How do you go about aquiring those charters from the empire your pos resides in?
Or do you have to buy them only?
