I do understand where you are coming from in regards to the whole "combat is futile" and "learn to run away" thing. Running away has been the general theme in Eve PvP for a while now. That's however not limited to new players at all. It's pretty much the same for players of all ages: Make sure you can either win or safely disengage beforehand, or avoid fighting at all costs. Certainly not everybodies style, but rather common.
I do however strongly disagree with your statement, that you can hardly learn anything if you blow up after you barely managed to turn on your DCU. One thing you could take away from that for example is, that you may want to turn your DCU on before even getting into a combat situation.
As for the structured arena PvP you suggest: While I am not militantly opposed to the idea (read: It probably wouldn't hurt too much, but I don't see why it should be added either), I do not think that you'd learn how to PvP from it. Piloting your ship and shooting your guns in a combat situation is only a very small part of combat PvP in Eve. A much bigger part is being aware of your surroundings, assessing what you can and cannot beat, ideally just by seeing it on your directional scanner, knowing how to react in certain situations, being able to smell a trap ten miles upwind and of course what I call "the hunt": Finding a target you can kill, coercing it to engage and not letting it escape once found. Those are all things you can impossibly learn from arena PvP, but those are very important skills to have in PvP - arguably much more important than the actual orbit -> f1 part.

Yes. That. Or hook up with one of the NPSI communities such as Spectre Fleet. |

There's nothing keeping you from organizing a structured tournament yourself, you know?
Regular arena PvP in the sense of NEO or AT or as suggested by the OP is kind of against the spirit of the game: Usually, no matter what you are doing in Eve, other random people can mess with it (except ship spinning, maybe). That would not be possible in a closed off arena of sorts. |

Don Pera Saissore wrote:Then why do we have the AT?
Well, it's an event. It's not an everyday part of the game.

True, there is no honour in Eve, but being able to screw people over in the least honourable ways is kind of what makes this game. |
