EM, Explosive, Kinetic and Thermal Shield Compensation skills.
Quote: To active shield hardeners: 3% bonus per skill level to Shield ____ resistance when the modules are not active To passive shield hardeners: 5% bonus per skill level to Shield ____ resistance
The description is a bit iffy where active resistance tanking is concerned.
Say I have them all trained to level 5. My (T1) active EM shield hardener will give me a 15% bonus to EM resistance when it's not active. I get that much.
Where it all gets a bit fuzzy for me is when I turn my hardeners on. Do I keep that original 15% bonus on top of the 50% the hardener gives me, or does it drop that 15%, and just give me my standard 50%?
Or is it completely different altogether?
Any insight is much appreciated, cheers.

It'll just give you the standard 50% boost, same as the armour hardner skills.

37.5 * 1.25 = 46.875% Might be time to consider using that cap elsewhere? =)

The cap my hardeners take is completely negligible, so I'll be sticking to active hardeners for now, still better resists.

Yeah, train 4 skills to level 5 to make passive hardeners almost as good as active to save that tiny squirt of cap use? And still have to fit an invuln as there is no multispec passive shield hardener? Eh, maybe if I were armor tanking . . .
Hmm, although the difference in cpu requirements might let me put another wcs on. . .

U can use some powergrid rigs even if u do have cap probs.
too bad the compensation skills don't give a little amount on activation as well, say 2% per level (hell even 1% would be cool impo). (same goes for the armor ones btw) Resized tag... again... hope this pleases the tag ninjas from ccp... again :p

That cap use is NOT negligible by any means. If you think it is you really have not done any math. The only time it is negligible is on Capital ships. On smaller ships however, anything below battleship size for sure, the cap drain is quite large actually. If you convert that cap drain to regen from shield boosters you realize it makes a larger impact than most think. It makes the difference between the passive and active resist mods in many cases.
On battleships it's questionable, it depends on the exact setup as to which is better. You definitely shouldn't assume actives are better. Oddly enough, active hardeners tend to work better on passive tanks and passive hardeners work better on active setups.

Well, yeah, you've got to use that cap for something. Usually.
Of course, most of this conversation has been PvE-centric, where it is reasonable to expect that you can tank all the damage you'll receive. If you can't tank all the damage, then the added resists from hardeners will do better being able to boost longer. On the other hand, if you're being NOSed to death, those resist amplifiers will look pretty good.
