So, I'm over a year old now. I thought that now would be as good of a time as ever to attempt PvP as any other. So I said goodbye to my friends in my mission running corp, and applied to a PvP corp with access to a couple wars against corps operating in Essence area. I left my mission running (rigged) phoon behind, and purchased myself a new phoon, and attempted to fit a nanophoon.
Now, having only been a mission runner all of my life, I had some troubles putting one together. First of all, I only had Energy Emission Systems trained to level 2. I figured I could temporarily substitute medium NOS instead of heavy NOS (mistake #1). My new CEO recommended that I fit torps on my phoon instead of cruises, since we would be fighting battleships. Unfortunately, I had not trained torps skill yet, but I trained that really quick and fitted torps. I would essentially be relying on missiles and drones for damage (relying on missiles for damage - mistake #2. I only have 600k of sps in missiles). I then purchased and fit a named MWD (not having skills for T2 MWD, possibly mistake #3), a heavy cap booster, a scrambler, and a passive targetter (mistake #4 - useless mod. Even a sensor booster would be more appropriate). In the lows, I fit 4 nanos, and 3 inertial stabs.
Now the only thing leeft was for me and my new comrades to wait for a target. Eventually we found a target. Our CEO told us to dock and rearm and wait for the signal to undock. Our CEO suddenly told us to dock and warp to a gate, and jump through. The chase began. Our target was flying in a Raven. I figured that it should be easy enough since the Raven was supposedly a crappy PvP ship. We jumped through the gate, only to barely see our target warp off immediately. Pausing only to determine the his destination gate, we pursued. After 2 jumps, I had gotten ahead of my comrades (being in a nanophoon and all). My CEO told me to wait at the next gate. I arrived there to see our target waiting, shield modules activated. He targetted me but did not fire. My CEO told me to wait there for him and our other comrade.
My CEO arrived and the target suddenly opened fire on our CEO. Our 3rd comrade was still lagging a jump behind. But the battle began regardless. I was ordered to open fire and I happily obliged. I launched 5 Ogre I's, and unloaded a salvo of Mjolnir torps at the target. It was then that I learned how tough of a shield tank a Raven can fit. Even with a blasterthron, 5 Ogre I's and 4 siege launchers on the target, we could not take him down.
Enter NOSdomi stage left.
The NOSdomi immediately went for our CEO, who ordered us to take care of the domi. I then targeted the NOSdomi, and approached (not orbit) him with MWD activated (mistake #5). I then learned how nasty a stasis webifier is against a ship which relies upon transversal velocity to survive. Reduced to a mere 250 m/s, the NOSdomi released his drones and ordered them to attack me. In a panic, I knew that I was already dead. However, I was determined to do SOMETHING. I had lost my shields, and my armor was disappearing fast I targetted the heavy drones immediately, pulled in my own heavy drones and launched my light drones. I ordered my light drones to attack the heavy drones. Unfortunately, my armor wore thin, and my precious hull was breached. With a hearty *pop* my phoon was no more, and I was staring at my juicy pod. I warped to the nearest station before I could be killed. My blood pumping, I learned that my comrades had suffered a similar fate. The engagement was a total failure.
However, armed with the knowledge afforded me by my own mistakes, I hope to return to the battlefield soon again.

Lesson #1 should probably be: Don't fly a Battleship in your first PvP engagement.

you now know what you did wrong and that's good, the thing is:
If i had been in your position i would have hoped for some good advices from my corpmates and if i had been in you corpmates position i would certainly tried to help you as much as i could because my ass would also depend on your success

Sounds like you made one or two mistakes which you recognise, and you did one or two things like a pro.
I've only been PvPing for over a year and I still get blind panic when I know I am absolutely going to loose my ship.

Well its good you know what you did wrong. But try starting out with frigs or cruisers and working your way up...
Mission running is NOT even close to pvp...
And also, maybe try looking for another corp (No offense to your current corp) but with the amount of help they gave you, I think it might be better looking for a corp with leaders who will help you more and know how to control small gangs more effectively..

Actually the advice given by his corp was sound. It also sounds like they got ambushed as well. No offense but it was only 2vs2 in that engagement.
I cannot count the OP because he was a "noob". While he could be counted on doing ranged damage, he should not have been counted as a major player in his first engagement.
You obviously know what you did wrong. Not having the right skills is not you doing something wrong by the way. I would have started off (and I have) in a frigate or cruiser with my first pvp outing. I would rather lose 10 million in ship and component costs than 200 million.
Getting up close and personal to a Domi isn't good. Normally they will be NOS and since you knew they were NOS they would have webifiers and scramblers on board. You should keep them at range, using your drones to kill theirs and your torps to hit him. Maybe you could have web'd him to give your CEO time to get out of range. Dunno, I wasn't there and I am Monday Night Quarterbacking.
Don't be discouraged. My first PvP encounter involved about 60 ships. I was in a thorax and with all the lag (didnt turn sound off.. noob you know hehe) I got popped and didn't even know it.
Another encounter I actually killed someone while I was being anti-frigate support in my Rax. It just takes time to get used to PvP battle is all.

How could you fail to break a raven's tank with a nanophoon and a blasterthron.

You learned alot of things that some veteran players still cannot seem to grasp, consider this a positive experience.
Here are a few general rules you may wish to follow
1. Dont fly a ship if you cannot afford to have a second one already fitted sitting in your hangar.
2. Never fly a ship for pvp that you cannot deck out with t2 weapons and tanks, you dont have to fit them per say but its a good bench mark to judge were you are SP wise.
3. Dont ever bring a nanoship into webber range of ANYTHING.
4. If you dont have good tanking skills Fit HUGE long range turrents, cram your lows with damage mods and warp in at 70ish km to the rest of your fleet that is right on top of the targe. Now you can sit in the back hamming out damage from a safe distance and you can observe what your gang members are doing (you'll learn alot this way trust me).

Uuuuhm...no...Just cause you cant fit a ship fully with t2 does not mean you should not fly it.

Its good that you know what u did wrong, your biggest mistake was flying a typhoon and second was flying a nano version (soon to be nerfed) Nano ships are a passing trend and need a degree of pratice, get practicing on corpmates to test setups and tactics. I am minmatar speced character and haven't even considered flying a phoon because i just dont have the missle skills. Fly what you can fly properly. For the first 5mp skill points i flew only rifters, then a cruiser and onto battleships when i knew i could fit them and fly properly. You would have been more useful in a rupture damage wise. Also never fit a T2 MWD on a nanophoon, best named is soooo much better. Check stats in game to see why.

don't fly a ship in pvp without t2 weapons?
ignore that. t1 will do ya fine until ya have t2. don't just sit in dock being bored until you have everything t2. get a cheap fit and go and have a blast

I would also like to take this opportunity to state the ceo/gang leader let his gang all fly about at different times. Align and gang warp ftw.

Your wording here makes me think that you think that a sensor booster is only slightly more useful than a passive targeter? This is not the case, sensor boosters are very useful as they let you catch smaller ships before they can warp off.
Lots of good advice in this thread except for the T2-only one. I STILL have a lot of T1 and names mods in my setup as I train the skills and my kill ratio is just fine. Also T1 mods are cheaper to replace and there is a lot to be said for that.
Definitely look at flying a Cruiser or a Battle Cruiser while you get your skills up. You are used to running missions, so I am guessing that your tanking skills are up. Take advantage of where you already have skills (Gunnery and Tanking I'm guessing).
Plan to lose a lot of ships. Don't be afraid of losing ships. The best way to learn to PVP is to fly a lot and fight a lot.
Also, no idea who told you that Ravens are crappy PvP ships. They were wrong.

Good to see you are learning already. Can I suggest you jump into a ruppy, stabber or hurricane for next time. You will enjoy it more and pvp is supposed to be fun.....
Then when you are comfortable break out the next phoon and rip someone a new one.

I think the T2 comment went misunderstood. Or maybe I just misunderstood it.
I read it as 'Don't use a specific mod unless you can use the T2 version'. For example, Don't use a PDS unless you can Fit a PDS2. Not necissarily use the T2 version, but since you have the skills to use it, the T1 will be that much better.

that would mean not fitting guns until you have "RELEVANTGUNSKILL 5" Which is totally unecessary.
I think that better advice would be "Train the skills for the mods you want to use to 3 right away and to 4 ASAP."
