We all have (and I still do) made a rookie mistake that cost us a shiny new cruiser, or a PLEX in transport.
My latest in a long line of newbie mishaps also happened to be my most expensive, netting a loss of close to 400m in total. I got jumpy and trained up to fly a Navy Issue Drake, fully fit with a warp scram, enervator(web), a couple large shield plugs, and a booster. Packed with techII light drones, a drone damage amp, overdrives and reinforced bulkheads. On the available 8 missile slots I placed 8 heavy assault batteries(I don't remember which ones exactly) and upon seeing my 190ish dps and close to 30k hp, I undocked and headed out for the hunt.
Immediately outside the station I recieve a notice that there's a hostile player in the immediate area. I hit the d-scan and roll toward the Fleet-issue stabber, opening up with all batteries/webs/drones at 2800m.
Boy did I get slapped. Backhand. Hard.
Enter the stabber, with a bittervet pilot (of 5 years) looking for some lunch. Fitted with techII torpedos that nicely minced the shields, and some antimatter charges to lap up the hull, and an admittedly sweet Webber that stopped me cold. All in all, I'd say 2-2 1/2 minutes tops.
As soon as I realized what I'd done wrong 90 seconds later, I was back in A pod in my home station, bye bye drake.
The lesson learned: The drake, and it's badass Navy twin, are fit with that many slots to utilize the array of short/long range and high/low impact devices that are out there. Utilizing torpedoes for short range brawls and heavy/assault missiles for medium length bombardments can make this craft formidable to say the least. The furthered use of this Battlecruisers ability to fit warfare links and its enormous energy/cpu make it ideal for tackling, jamming, regeneration, and can usually still hold an afterburner(with a capacitor rig). Having said that, the drake is meant for much more than this in the long term, as a fleet ship and a brawler.
My fellow pilots, new and old, bitter and smiley, if you feel it post a lesson quickly learned for the benefit of your fellow capsuleers. I hope someone can benefit from my relatively new stupidity! |

In addition to being in the wrong location, I'll be honest:
Pretty much everything you posted about what happened, and your various takeaways from that experience, were inaccurate or outright incorrect. I'd encourage you to learn a bit more about the various aspects of Eve "meta" before undocking in anything more expensive than a T1 cruiser again.
