So you have small cloaked mines which when you get within say 5000m they'll uncloak and fly into your ship. 50-100 damage.
or giant things which will be cloaked but will only be able to explode if the ship gets within 1000m. However a nice like 5-10km blast radius. Doing 500-1000 dmg.
then stargate busters. Which are of all sizes. Not cloaked. But will fly at 500m/s toward any ship who gets within like 25km.
these would all be low sec and lower and there should be a fair amount of warning and ability to actually warp away from any of these mines. except the cloaked ones. but you ought to be able to tank those; if you're wandering into lowsec you should be able to anyway. Then you could have strategies with warp distruptors and such.

Mines were in game years ago, didn't work then.
Problem was you set all your mines let say in 0.0 and you head to another system.
Two days later you head to 0.5 to pick up a Item you bought while in 0.5 someone ran into mine field.
BOOM flagged and Concorded.........
Happened and it sucks! (even though you mined in 0.0)

Just make it so soon as you leave the system... your mines die. Just like probes or drones.

Minelayer class ships, capable of deploying up to 10 'mines' (Which are effectively drones with deathwishes). The ship itself doesn't need to be on the gate, only in the system. Once an unfriendly appears on the gate or whatever the object is, the mines race toward it and explode.
Simple, eh?

Mines in three dimensions is inefficient, you'd be better off dropping sentry drones around a control tower or something and shoot at anything that comes near. Even if you gave the mines some AI to persue a target, the entire point of a mine is surprise, and if it uncloaks to come get you at 5km, its not exactly a surprise; its a turkey shoot.

I had a suggestion that would have simplified it all with a Mine Control Unit that uses a static field of mine and has mines as charges as opposed to single deployable mines. "Imagination is the key that unlocks the door." - ME |

Ya. Simple.
"Everyone to the minelayers!" -- 30 people spam 300 mines around the gate. "Everyone to the Covetors!" -- 30 people mine away. Someone enters local? Boom.
Oh, your mines don't explode unless you are in the ship?
"3 people to the minelayers!" -- 3 people spam 30 mines "Everyone else to the covetors!" -- 27 people mine, 3 people go afk.
No thanks. The only thing this brings is laziness and more lag. ~~~~~~~~~ Hey Gai. Bak Off Coz Ai Bang Yu Hawd. K Gai? |

MMMM ds9 was the best.

Why not once you get soveriegnty you can place sentry guns on the stargate and set the settings just like a pos. While using the stargate as a power source and the settings. I definately like that idea also.

You can easily just make it 5-10 mines and only deployable by a single kind of t2 ship.

Well nobody is suggesting you can put out 10,000 mines. 5-10 only. Also it wouldn't exactly be no work... you had to work to purchase those mines and to anchor them ought to be like 1minute. Which 10,000 mines of 10,000 minutes... you know if you want to spend a week placing mines. All the power to you I guess. My bet would be that somebody would actually come around during that week to set off those mines. and if you don't anchor... they all die in like an hour anyway...

What we need is an item that can be used for defense, but that is replenishable. Drones are great, but on most ships (all except the Domi) drone bays are so gimped that when you lose 1 you just lost 20% or more of your defensive capability, and by the time your defense can start working, you enemy has had the time to attack you. We have warp bubbles which are offensive items, why cant we have defensive items that dont allow warp scramming, or give a large bonus to shield/armor hp within the radius? Maybe an anchorable missile defense system, rats have em, webbing towers, defender towers, etc.
Maybe you can anchor a defender tower next to you in the belt your mining at that will disrupt turrets, or fire defenders, or give you hp bonuses? Maybe a webber tower than will make it so you only need 1 huggin to catch the nanophoon

Perhaps just an anchorable tower which within it's bubble it dissipate or inhibits all weapons. Well I'm not completely sure... but I'm pretty sure that's how control tower sheilds work. Would be pretty cool addition.
