I am using a Tech 1 fitted Merlin and managed handle a single rat group in 0.7 space rather well. I'm interested in doing more ratting in 0.6 and 0.7, but was wondering how profitable it is in the long run.
I always hear about people making a decent profit from ratting. Is this only in low-sec or 0.0, or can you make a good starter bank off of 0.6-0.7 space as well?

Well if you are going to rat in high sec, rat in 0.5 (that's also concord protected). And yes you can make decent money ratting in 0.5, not as good as low sec, but not much risk of a player killing you either. If you really want to make alor of money in highsec then go and do some missions, they start of slow with lvl 1s, but with lvl 4s you can make like 20-40 mil/hour on some missions.

I once, about over a year ago, got a Dread Guristas frigate thingy in a belt in 0.5 space.
It dropped something involving shields (maybe Dread Guristas invul field) which was nice.
And another time I got a Worm BPC off of another dread guristas NPf in a belt in 0.5 once as well. Which was also nice. Which I sold for about 30 million once I'd built the thingy.
I did the decent thing and spent the money on ships that I lost as soon as possible, which is the best way to enjoy the game but at least I almost made a few things explode.

I have to agree that if you want to kill rats for a living, start off with missions. The bounties-per-ship are lower, and you don't have a shot at that super rare faction stuff, but the mission rewards, the unlimited amount of rats, and the LP rewards more than make up for it.

Thanks for the replies. I'll stick to missions for now.
One quick second question: I average about 50,000ISK - 100,000ISK per standard non-story Level 1 mission, if you combined pirate bounties, mission reward, and sales from loot.
Does that sound about normal?

yup, that sounds about right. also I suggest you find a station that has 2 combat agents you can run at the same time. Youll get to level 2 alot quicker.

I do both Missions and Ratting. I have found a bit of space where the salvage from the rats I take out in the belts, .7 to .5, sell for a good bit of isk with minimal hauling. That then puts me back within 3 jumps of the agents I use.
