A movie that millions of people turn out to watch is a major motion picture. A movie only a niche demographic of around 20 thousand people will be interested in seeing is a smut film. |

Tisi the valiant: An everyday heroic space-cop becomes disillusioned by the rampant crime and environmental destruction wrought by the greedy miners, and so leaves the force to become a mail-man. However, in the course of delivering one particular special delivery she stumbles upon a plot to assassinate the rulers of nullsec and highsec at their big peace summit and plunge the galaxy into total war. It's up to tisi and her lovable fedo (comic relief) to stop the assassinations and save the galaxy.
I'd watch it.
Make the same story without paying CCP for the IP and you have a movie with the exact same quality and without the associated cost of the IP. |

While the idea of a movie is a nice pipe dream, the reality is it caters to an incredibly nice proportion of the population. It would be extremely difficult to turn a profit on a movie with the production values you're hoping for based on the turnout of wherever the movie manages to air in theaters. Online availability would only result in pirating, so that would not be a viable method of return either. |

Dear 'insert deity here', please no.
We create the content and the videos we see are events we can relate to. A separate movie in the Eve universe is just another sci-fi film that will flop, no matter how excited you get at the idea of watching something that you aren't part of. |

There was a show on a game network (G3?) called Portal (I think). Granted it covered multiple MMOs (EQ, DAoC, etc), I think that style of a show would fit EVE really well. |

Lucas Kell wrote:Linus Gorp wrote:Mittani's attempt at getting the EVE playerbase to fund his business with a full-blown propaganda piece failed. Not more. The other book that comes to my mind, Andrew Groen's " A History of the Great Wars of EVE Online" got funded beyond his wildest expectations (and yes, I backed that. Whereas I didn't give the slightest **** about that propaganda crap that Mittani wanted to release). Call it what you want (though how a book where the author takes direct input from the enemies of the Imperium would be propaganda I don't know), it was a book agreed by CCP, to be written by a published author, put forward by one of the most well known players in the game and it failed to gain traction. Like it or not, rejecting media opportunities like that, regardless of who puts it forward, hurts chances of future projects. It's hardly the best sign for someone wanting to put the kind of budget that movies require on the line. Why would they bother trying to dance around the delicate subjects (based in fact) that upset players like yourself when they could simply ignore the EVE lore, write a space story about a big war and release a movie about that without tying themselves to IP. From what I've read of Groen's book it's just a longwinded way of reciting EVE history, which we all know and 5 minutes of google can tell you. While it might be a great thing for EVE fans to collect and stick next to their unopened copies of EVE Source, it's not exactly something that will excite non-EVE players and provide a gripping read.
You forgot to mention that it was also a book which was largely aimed at stroking the ego of one particular person.
The book that sought to do things as objectively as possible got less 'official' support and more actual support, because it was more interesting for outsiders as well.
An EVE movie could be about something that actually happened, but at this point, doing anything with mittens, gs or bob will be doomed before it starts, especially when seeking support from within the community.
Also, if you can google Groen's research - Be my guest, show the results to me. I can assure you, a lot of research went into that EXACTLY BECAUSE the information could not be found on google. And if you call EVE's history longwinded - The very book mittens tried to have funded is a part of that, so it must be longwinded as well?
If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

I think a made for TV EVE based movie would be awesome. It could be on the SyFy channel in the US.
After amazing examples of cinema from SyFy such as "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid" and "Mansquito" theres always hope for a made for TV flick about EVE.
Keep the faith.

A movie doesn't automatically turn into a blockbuster, no matter how good it is. In order to become a worldwide success, a movie needs to be known, even before it's even in theaters - it's all about marketing.
The Warcraft Movie, if it's going to be a success will be just that mostly because many people know (World of) Warcraft. Dozens of millions of people have played the games, and many more know about them at least. And then, by being a success in the first place, the movie has the chance to attract new players.
With Eve, it's different. Only few people play this game, and those who don't, may have heard the strangest things about it. In order for an Eve movie not to fall flat on it's face, a lot of money would need to be invested in marketing.
Then of course, I don't think neither CCP, nor the Eve community will be able to just conjure up $100M to make a silly movie, like Activision-Blizzard can.
A TV/VoD (mini-)series on the other hand does sound much more feasible. Get a good writer, hook up with Netflix and and see what happens. But even then - it's probably not going to help the game much. I'd rather have CCP concentrate on the game more - maybe put a bit more effort into conventional marketing and not branch out too far. |

Assume you meant "niche"; I'm pretty sure one thing we could all agree is that EVE online does not appeal to the "nice" part of the population.

Jade Yanumano wrote:Why does EVE Online not have a movie?
Making movies is a business. To make mony a movie must be watched by tons of people and investors only inest on IPs which already have been bought m by tons of people.
EVE Online is almsot irrelevant on the mass media scale. A Hollywood film wouldn't break even not even if every EVE player ever watched the film and bought the DVDs and every piece of merchandise twice.
So who's left to make the film? Some European producer, which means g-bye to almost any chances of reaching a global market which in turns renders potential profit even smaller.
So the reason why there is no EVE film and likely will never be is: not profitable enough.
There's been some talks about a EVE mini-series for TV since some years ago; that's almost unavoidable when some CCP top brass are TV people (Hilmar, Seagull) but then again we meet the profitability thing. TV is both cheaper to produce and easier to market (a series can be sold years after production), but then you have issues with the IP. Is EVE interesting enough to a wide audience? Does it have sex (no) romance (no) action (kinda) violence (ship explosions for 50 minutes?) politics (kinda) philosophy (cough, cough) as to interest someone who doesn't knows what is EVE Online? Is the backstory accessible or familiar to newcomers?
I would call it moot. Maybe someone risk his moeny for it, eventually, but... EVE is a spaceships game. That is really hard to convey without either ignoring spaceships and going for people stories (would that be EVE?) or being really freak in what drives and interests the mass audiences (people, not hardware).
CCP Seagull: "EVE should be a universe where the infrastructure you build and fight over is as player driven and dynamic as the EVE market is now".
62% of players: "We're not interested. May we have Plan B, please?"
CCP Seagull: "What Plan B?"
