Edited by: SomeHardLovin on 02/02/2007 19:03:42 So I was thinking.. since im Caldari we mostly shield tank. Am I therefore concerned with mostly protecting myself from EM damage that hurts my shields?
For instance.. could I load out my ship with a few Shield Extenders and a passive shield regenerator, an EM Shield Compensator or 2 and train up similar skills putting my EM resistance at like 90%.. would other damage affect my shields? Or would I basically be pretty tough at that point until someone pounded through my shields and I died quickly and painfully.. I'm new so i'm not sure.

If someone was doing only EM damage you would be pretty hard to take down, but as soon as someone starts doing other types of damage (except for mabey explosive depending on DPS) you're screwed. An extender, shield booster, and 1 em hardener with 1-2 invulnrability fields is a pretty standard shield tank if you're looking for one.

all dmg is the same.... just that shields have 0 base em... like armor has 0 base explosive.
if u get 70% resists in all dmg types lets say... all the dmg types get resisted the same.
if u get 90% em and other resistsances are low.. then if some one hits you whit em... your going to take very litle dmg... but if enyone uses other dmg on you... it will hurt.
hope that helped to make some sens :P

People seem to get a lob on about plugging the so called 'em gap' in shields with the standard 2 invuln and EM hard (or even 1 invuln and EM). More often than not if I'm pvping and I have the space for 3 hards I'll pop in a thermal instead of the EM. Reasoning: It is the overall most used damage type IMHO. Lasers and Hybrids do it, and the majority of drone users go for hammerheads/ogres (unless packing XP, easily tanked). Whereas EM will cover you against Lasers (but then Amarr ships are uncommon), some missile users (may go for a generic thermal load, especially as vs most shield tanks its the best bet, or the racial flavour du jour), and those short range projectile users without access to gucci T2 ammo. Especially if facing an enemy with a good spread of ships thermal resists are a better deal.
If you're talking about PVE then just tank the main damage your enemy are doing and don't fret about the rest. ------------ Crow Squad... An Audio and Visual Joygasm by Larkonis Trassler |

Base armor explosive resistance is 10%
20% for Amarr armor
(why is that armor resistances are based on the race of the ship and shield resistances are the same for every race?)

Well typically shield resists are lower but they also get passive regeneration and invuln fields.
Shields dont need anything else really they are already strong tankwise.
Interceptors get the +10% shield resist on the racial resistance mind you.

It all depends on who you're fighting. A lot of the time I avoid setups that generate a lot of thermal damage just because I know a lot of people think like you and thermal is likely to be one of your higher resists. Imo unless you're fighting something amarr (the most predictable race) you're best off evening out your resists as much as possible. CAuse minmatar have projecties and missiles to vary damage, caldari have missiles, and galentte have drones... they are all pretty flexible in what damage type they really want to have a lot of. +++

if you dont tank well against EM you may just meet a very swift death to a decent laserboat.
a drake with poor em resists will probably get completely slaughtered by a harbinger, etc
