I did as most recommended and went flying around in T1 frigates. All of which were 1v1, and I was killed easily every encounter. I think twice I broke through my opponents shields. A couple times I couldn't even land a hit.
I tried both Merlin and Kestrels, with roughly the same results.
Most people said try to take away something from the encounters and learn from them. Which, I have been, but now I'm frustrated. My issue seems to always come down to range. My opponents seem to have no issue getting the jump on me and holding me at range. No matter what I try, I can't seem to dictate the fight. Someone showed me CTRL+click for targetting, which is great. However, I use MWD and approach the target and spam to web my target. I never seem to land or be able to do it.
Is it a skill point issue, or am I missing something? Is there a key to getting range on your target that I am missing? I realize the Merlin is for up close, but I couldn't get within 10km of anyone. I've had Merlins get the jump on me and maintain 1km distance. Is there a secret to it? |

Some of your losses are AB fit, not MWD fit.
At least one of your fits had a web but no scram. If you cut their velocity from 3k to 1500 with the web but you are still only doing 1k, you won't catch them.

Takes some practice to know when to turn your prop off ahead of time and when to slow yourself down so you don't over shoot your target. If you don't land yourself close with a close range weapon system (blasters, rockets) you will have cost yourself the fight, unable to apply your dps and hug them for that half precious half a minute within face melting range. That is the life of a mwd brawler.
You got the right idea, but are out of practice. Try using AB for a bit and bait people in to warp in on you. This way you can fit more tank and prolong the engagement to better identify, and separate, your mistakes.
Choose your fights and fly with a buddy. You will either become suddenly amazing solo, or you will quit from frustration if it doesn't click.
Fly well

Thank you for the advise. I find most people are warping right on top of me to start the fight. I'm not even sure how to warp on top of someone like most people seem to do.
I'll go straight AB and more tank modules.
Not sure what Ctrl+Space is, I'll get in game and find out.

Good thing for a newbee is super tanky frigate, when you will at least have time to do something. Try to fit something with cruiser size plate or shield extender. So you will have time to try sling shot or at least a shot ;) Playing with range requires time and tank will give you some. I believe Merlin could serve you here. But also Tristan can be fitted to have very good passive armor tank and drones have no problems with range. Punisher will miss 3-d middle slot, so you will have problems using it solo. Tormentor can serve better if you can fit T2 lasers (scorch).

Low skills and suboptimal fits. Surprise/gimmick fits are your best option. Dual web gank merlin, dual Web scram kite kestrel, kite Tristan or missile condor/kestrel etc.
Play rock paper scissors and pick your fights carefully or fit a rock that looks like paper on dscan.

I hear that you can practice PVP on the experimental server for free (all items cost 1000 ISK or something like that).
Might be a good idea to do that for a while before YOLOing into low sec.
Also, I have heard that newbs go to Thera to blow each other up. No idea of the accuracy of that rumor.
Whenever I see PVP players in low sec they always seem to be 8 years old and have all kinds of uber fits. Not surprising that you are getting your doors blasted off. |

Some corrections since I'm against giving newbros bad intel:

Might be a good idea to do that for a while before YOLOing into low sec. True all items cost 100 ISK on Sisi, but that means people will fly stuff that would be ridiculously expensive and thus never actually used in-game. So it's absolutely NOT a good way to practice.
Droidster wrote:Also, I have heard that newbs go to Thera to blow each other up. No idea of the accuracy of that rumor. Obviously false, Thera is full of experienced PVPers and/or blobbers that will blow up a solo newbro in 5 seconds.

Uber fits are not so common. Uber ships are (pirate frigs, T3Ds) because people are lazy and look for easy kills. Sadly links are common, too. So yes, I agree solo lowsec PVP can be quite challenging. I second my corpmate's advice to also fly with friends. Solo is awesome, and definitely do-able even by a newbro with a lot of patience and persistence, but it can be frustrating at times.

I would call them something more like misadventures. Like that time you fell off the horse when you tried to ride it backwards. Because reasons.

But just because some people fly stupid fits on Sisi doesn't mean it isn't a good way to practice. It's still a playground where you can test all of your fits out before losing them, which is undeniably a great way to practice. |

if you're going to test your fit with a friend in SISI vs. the relative standard fits on TQ then yes, it is a great way to practice, but if you are just gonna use it with random somebody who is just theory-crafting fits as well then your experience may not be useful in TQ.
