"The portals of war" (which it won't let me put in the title) OK, i think i got the name right. Anyway.
Level 3 mission, running it in a typhoon. First 2 rooms of the first stage were pretty easy. In the 2nd stage it wasn't to bad, had a few moments where i was getting close to warping out, but didn't need to.
Then i hit the 5 room, took one look at it and aligned to warp. Actually i didn't just align i hit warp and it slowly dragged me around... Screen 1 Screen 2
If the images worked, then you can probably see why i hit warp. After doing missions for about 4 months i have yet to come across 1 BS in anything below a level 4. To find a room full of them was a shock.
BTW my tank lasted less than 10 seconds, even with a damage control boosting my structure. The instant i started to align the entire room aggro'ed and i was scrammed and webbed. Yes that is my wreck you can see near the centre - even if i could have found the webber i'd never have been able to lock onto it fast enough, let alone kill it, before i melted.
So just a friendly warning - if you are doing this mission use the pod to check out the rooms. It might just save your ship.
Edit: to get the pictures working and it seems i can't post with my main...

Been a while since i ran a mission but i seem to recall some sort of time limit on this mission, also if you shoot certain structures lots of BS spawn and kill you.

if i remember correctly there was a lvl 3 mission where lots of bs and stuff was in the last stage. however, they where like 200km away and you had only to kill a single ship which was on top of the gate. maybe this is the mission you mentioned and the 200km range was screwed up with the latest mission fixes

I think this is the mission where you have to destroy the control tower to stop the massive uber-fleet of BS from spawning. There is a time limit if it's the mission I'm thinking of, and basically if you don't destroy the control tower fast enough, you fail the mission.

I completed this L3 mission a couple of days ago. I do not think you were supposed to warp through the last gate. I remember being warned not to go past a certain point and just to report back after getting to the fourth gate. The missions seem to blur together after a while though.

Well the mission wasn't complete and everything in the previous rooms was dead. So unless i missed a spawn, that didn't lock a gate, then whatever it was i needed to kill was in that room.
It was a level 3 mission. I know this because i got it from a level 3 agent. Unless you are saying that its also possible to get level 4 missions from a level 1 agent...? But if it was a level 4, then why the heck is it available when i don't have the standings to talk to those agents. Additionally i think the reward was about 200k ISK and about 300lp, kinda low for a level 4. You can also get this as a level 4 i imagine, just like you can get many levels of the same missions - just with harder spawns.
There is a trick i use to show me when the mission is completed. Open the mission then minimise the window. When the mission updates (completes) then it restores itself by blocking most of my screen. Annoying but only the blockade actually tells you when its completed. The biggest hint that i had about not completing the mission and thus being foolhardy or not reading the mission description (because it was indeed a new mission for me): I had to fail the mission...
The mission that has "the last gate you don't go though, because the mission says not to" is something like Human Cattle or the missing reporters one. This does indeed have a BS fleet sitting about 150km away from the gate. But it only has about 4 BS and a relativly small support fleet. No its not this one, yes i know because i have done the other one and completed it. They also don't instantly aggro you, but even if they did at that range you can still get out before they get close.
As for the incomming DPS, i'd guess around 2000. So yes you could tank it with enough support boosting you, but solo...?

I did this mission recently. Yes it's lvl 3 and yes it has about 7 BS in it.
You don;t have to kill them though. All you ahve to do is kill some structure and get out. But I did solo the whole room without warping out in a drake. but thta has more to do with the overpoweredness of a drake tbh.

You have to get the data chip out of the control tower and then boogie out of there. I just ran it this weekend, it's tricky. When I warped in though I didn't have but about 5 ships, but if you kill them off dozens spawn. I barely had enough time to kill the tower, get a tractor on it's cargo drop, recall my drones and warp out. I was deep into structure when I got out.

A better way to do this is to open the mission details after you get to your destination system and then close it back up. Then when the initial goal is completed, the mission tab will glow.

Edited by: Estel Arador on 05/02/2007 18:10:57 I think you may have to get there faster. I ran the mission today and only encountered 3 cruisers at the control tower when I arrived, and 5 more appeared when I started shooting the tower.
I got this transmission as I entered the mission area:
Quote: Message > Hi, this is your agent speaking. Your ship's computer seems to have picked up a distress signal from a nearby Amarrian entity. I have deciphered it and it is a request for more reinforcements. They might arrive at any minute! Hurry up or you'll be overwhelmed!

I lost a Dominix the first time I tried this mission. Like you, I failed to heed the warning about getting to the last room within 1 hour, or a fleet would arrive that I could not stand up to. The agent wasn't kidding. Ha! But why should I believe her, in the past her dire warnings about level 3 missions never panned out. In fact, a lower level agent in the same corp once tried to trick me into importing slaves and even drugs into Gallente space... So it was pretty natural to disregard whatever agents say by the time this mission comes around. But this time, she's not kidding or trying to trick you.

It's the timer. You have to beat the reinforcements or get BBQed holy-style. ----------------

IIRC it's about +3000dps, but for sure tankable in a domi with support.
We did that last part (which isn't required for the mission) with a t2 raven, tanked by a domi and supported by 2 af for the frigs.

As others have remarked this is all about timing. The mission briefing mentions a time limit before the reinforcements arrive. This timer starts once you accept the mission. Never accept it and then go for tea, to bed, to the pub otherwise you run into that mob.
If you do the mission fast enough then the last stage contains 2 sentry guns, 2 bc's and a cruiser. Then when you fire on the Control Tower another 5 or 6 bc's spawn.
The reinforcements random aggro when they appear so it is hard to force them onto a single tank.
