I've only recently decided to get a POS, and i've purchased all the parts etc etc, i've been reading the beginners guide, and i cant seem to think of a really good way of making a pos profitable, moon harvesting requires at least 3-4 Medium POS's to be able to produce the invaluable tech 2 componants. The only thing i think i can do semi-efficiently is to use it to build ships and then sell them in 0.0; anyone else managed to make their POS's financially sucessful?

I have two POS, both running financial sucessfull. One mines Moon Materials that are expensive enough to cover fuel costs and yield even a bit of profit, the second one is packed with mobile labs that are normally 24/7 booked.
So it IS possible, its only a lot of work.
And no, you dont need a POS in 0.0 to find a "good" moon, its only easier ;-)

Edited by: Erilias Ilthis on 05/02/2007 16:12:51 hi there,
small and medium POS can be lucrative already with one harvesting array and one single lab. You do have to know it takes some effort. The days that isk was printed in pos printing plants are definitely over.
They CAN be financially healthy. They will NOT per se be as soon as you start it up. Make sure you do your homework and remember for all what's related to POS's... Excel is your friend

EDIT: It does not have to be in 0.0. I think that even makes it more difficult.

The trick with making POS financially successful (for moon mining) is picking the right moons, and using as few pos as possible.
If you're looking at Raw's only, you'll want prom/dysp etc. Otherwise go for a complex reaction. The full setup to get to final components is best saved for doing it with a decent sized corp (decent sized = bulk buy your fuel, freighter to a depot, distribut to pos by indies from there, and not spend all your time doing it - unless you love hauling ofc.)

GOD LUCK .... !
if your not using a large pos baasically forget making any profit ... unless you can find a good moon .. this YOU wont do ... period .. prolly not even in 0.0 ... !
Pos' are such a**** to be honest ive had three now .. two smalls and one medium ... all we ended up doing was seeming to refuel them and empty them .... you can make massive amounts of isk shipping and ferrying oygen isotopes around howwever .. i make double money in like six jumps in stacmon .. !
Whoops i shouldnt have told you should I ..!
the truth beknown ... unless you get a moon with the good stuff dont even bother unless you can make medium level items (that you need a medium pos)! But aagain your gonna be restricted to stuff like .. carbon polymers or such ... !
We used to mine titanium and make a profit but those days are gone now as people are selling at like 100 isk a unit all over the place ..!

The key to being financially successful with a POS is, imo, having as many options as possible. I run an advanced material chain with a large and medium POS, and it's well in the black.
However, I can produce two raws, run multiple simple reactions (using or not using a produced raw), and run any complex reaction up to and including 3-ingredient ones - all at the same time. Furthermore, I've got a spreadsheet set up which spits out comparative profits between different setups when I enter the applicable prices into it.
I have as yet to go into the red, as a crashed material simply prompts me to target another. The market always heals by the time that second material crashes.
Ofc, I've got a decent simple reaction to base my setup on, so I can imagine situations where it's much harder to juggle things around. My advice is to go plunk yourself down in Jita (or Tash-Murkon? or Rens?) and design a spreadsheet for yourself. The patterns across multiple reactions / tiers are tough to see, just looking at the numbers.
Edit: Oh, and ignore,

Fuel cost differences definitely make medium and small towers profitable in certain circumstances.
