Hi all,
I will be training myself to be competent in small ship (frig/destroyer) combat for FW or regular pvp.
I will most of the time be flying solo, and am debating if I should take the turret route with support skills, or the missile/rocket route.
From personal perspective I am considering missiles/rockets as it is something I have yet to try. However, looking through ships it seems somewhat limitting.. And while I'd like to try something else, I'd also like to be competitive..
Any suggestions, fits, important skills that might be overlooked? Can I get anywhere with about 2milSP, or is that cutting close?
Thanks! |

Eventually, you'll want both. Missiles are considered easier while you're learning how to manage the other aspects of PVP. You might be better served by picking the ship you want to start off with and develop the weapons for that ship first.

if you heading the rockets/missiles path you want both!. With rockets you can brawl and with missiles you can kite. That's their purpose.
More important than the weapons itself is the skills to support this weapon system. Be sure to be fast when using missiles and strong when using rockets.

I would say turrets, preferably lasers. Reasons being that they go pew pew pew in your head.
Now days all weapon systems are in a pretty decent place. Just train for what you think you will enjoy most. |

rockets and missiles share support skills with bigger missiles and torpedoes. all turrets share the gunnery support skills. that is all the projectile, hybrid, and energy turrets. if you wanna specialize in like 1 ship and it happens to be a missile boat then yea go missiles. but if wanna fly lots of things turrets are a thousand times better. hybrid turrets to 5 with two certain support skills to 3 will get you into t2 blasters and rails. those same support skills are needed to get into artillery and autocannon specialization so the train time for those are super short too. pretty sure the same is true about energy turrets. |

If you're just starting out, go with rockets/light missiles. The math of applying DPS is bit easier to grasp while you're getting the hang of things.
With missiles, all you need to think about is range, your target's velocity and signature radius. Missiles also get the bonus of choosing your damage type.
Guns complicate the "can I apply DPS?" question a bit further with optimal vs fall off and transversal velocity.
Eventually you'll want to need to learn both though. Even if you stick with missiles, you'll still want to understand the application of gunnery in order to mitigate your opponent's ability to apply damage to you.

You could definitely do worse than to skill up for a drone ship of some kind. Frig or destroyer level would work but the extra micro + time required for your opponent to pop yr drones could be a huge boon for you, particularly if you're any good at micromanaging said drones. |

Drones if you want easy mode. Massive range. Strong fits and good application.
Missiles are in a good place at the small ship level and have great use in pve. Some niche use of missiles on higher levels (target painters, boosters, etc) make them more competetive but are generally worse when using a larger system against a smaller target. Dps is reliant at smaller leveled systems and has good range. Statoc total damage that can only be lowered. No possibolity for wrecking hits. Good for engaging assault frigates and other t2 resist profiles.
Turrets allow for a lot of cross training. Can scale down well whenengaging smaller targets assuming you can engage at range or slow their transversal. Dealing wrecking damage. Has best total possible applied dps. Especially when mixed with drones. |
