Could there be a 'skin -system'? for my ship , that could do the following:-
Reports on Dscan that the returned ping of said ship Is something else ship wise.
Changes the visual image of my ship to be a good representation of another ship.
The image of said ship could be projected around the ship to effectively mask it from identification - until any player or object interaction of course, much like using a cloak to stay hidden - this is hidden in plain sight type thing.
Reason-to make small gang pvp or faction plexing or solo roaming a bit spicier/risky/more fun with the suprise factor.
Both the Hunter & the hunted could be benefiting from this technology.
Like a cloak system it would have to be triggered/activated after a gate jump or a 'decloak' action/interaction.
Allowing visual id of the 'real' ship so it would not be any more OP than recons for example.
I envisage roaming in whatever the fleet comp you wish cloaked as ventures for example - landing on grid to see a t1 hauler at gate that as you engage you decloak to your 'real ship' & just as you close in your 'easy' target becomes smart bombing disco Domi & GFs happen.
A switch in the HUD like a T3 destroyer as the toggle maybe added as functionality that you install like a skin rather than a slot hogging module.
Too wacky - overpowered mechanic?- technically difficult? would the image need to show fitted weapon type? Cost ? issues? |

Projected image of another ship is too far, I believe. But a skin that is just another ship painted on top of yours? I could go for that. I don't know about changing dscan without needing an activatable module with heavy fitting requirements but just painting ships to resemble others would be neat.
Take a battleship and paint it to look like a fleet of frigates..

Good idea overall and it is logic in my opinion: Come on!!! How long would it take in real world for industrial magnates to loose their ships and cargo to pirates until they would make some kind of decoy for pirates to lure them and kill once and for all?
Never the less I suggest a slightly different solution which would be more logic and "fair" in my opinion as well as it would encourage an additional production for industrialists and might become some sink for material and funds: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=470976&find=unread
On other hand your proposal is more "high-tech" and might fit "Far future" doctrine of EvE |

No. You don't want your ship type to show on dscan, fit a cloak.
Disguising your ship type so it shows as something else on dscan will actually discourage pvp in the long run. If people cannot rely on their dscan being accurate, then they will not engage.
For example, in your idea, a group of players get a skin to disguise their T3Ds as Merlins. Another group in Tristans sees them on dscan as merlins and decides to engage them. They warp in only to encounter T3Ds and get unwanted butsechs. Group of players decide from then on to send in a lone scout with warp stabs to confirm ship types. Less pvp. |

Some industrials can be rigged up to be very nasty customers, so an unsuspecting attacker might get a surprise if they don't know what they are up against.
Historically Q-ships didn't work, but in the known instances where they did, it was a devastating blow to the attackers. They worked best against 'honorable' submarines from most accounts which is one reason why most sub captains went to unrestricted warfare on ships.
Now, in EVE, since sensors have no infallibility, the mechanic will never work right anyway. The OP is trying to introduce uncertainty into a system not really designed for it. That would probably not be the proper way to go about it.
It would probably be better to put a transponder system into place. Ships would have to 'squawk' their ID codes and types in controlled space (HiSec, all the time, LoSec in the controlled areas, NullSec no rules). A ship owner could buy a fake ID code, or ship type transponder script. The ship squawks a false ID at that point. Fine in Null Sec, okay in uncontrolled areas of LoSec, but in HiSec should either net a hefty fine from Concord or ship being blown out from under you. I don't know why but I like the idea of Concord writing tickets up like cops...
Then you could have warships pretending to be industrials and vice versa. It makes it a game of false flags and increases the difficulty of things out in Lo/Null Sec, the universe becomes less certain until ships are in visual range (100km<) of each other. In controlled areas things remain fairly certain though.
It's more of an advanced game concept and could be fun but not sure of the longevity of the idea. |

I could see something like this implemented in two separate ways:
1. An active module which displays type on d-scan as "jammed", "unknown" or "unclear". It would have drawbacks / limitations. This plays into how cloaks work (as it would be weaker than a combat cloak) and into how the force recons work. Unlike a cloak someone using this would also be combat probable, targettable, etc.
2. A personal deployable (think MTU / depot) which generates a copy of its owner's ship on d-scan, overview and grid. The fake ship would have the same name, pilot name and type, but would have very low hit points. The deployable would explode if the fake ship is killed. The deployable would deactivate if the owner is not within 250km of it and represent itself as itself (on grid, dscan, overview) while inactive. |

Yes, please put this in so the scammers in Jita selling moas as chameleons can rip people off with no method at all for anyone to tell it's not fake. |
