I had an idea for the messaging system in game. Its really difficult to keep up with chat windows sometimes. Its quite possible for important time sensitive information to be noticed too late. My idea is as such; add the ability to 'poke' a member by adding @ before their name. For instance:
@Moratok in the chat channel brings up a message on the target users screen saying they have been poked by what member and in what channel.
There of course would need to be parameters set to avoid spam, or using it as an exploit during pvp. The parameters could include, but certainly not be limited to, able to only use poke once every X amount of minutes, can only be poked once every X amount of minutes. These would be per channel of course. Also could include further user control as to how they are poked; such as only known associates in good standing can poke, or have a public poke wherein anyone can poke you as long as you are a member of the channel.
If you like this idea show some love and support.

I think a popup message could get quite annoying. What if it just made the chat tab flash a different colour? |

yeah like i said, it would need to be tailored to suit players needs and preferences. and maybe even have some options to accomplish that in the GUI. but the basic idea being you can poke someone. |

Already exists in multiple forms: Sending a message, opening a conversation, or dragging that persons linked name into whatever chat with your message following.
The tools exists and they are civilized tools. Didn't your parents/caregivers/handlers or the tv program that raised you tell you that poking people for attention is rude?

Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm at work and without an eve client infront of me, Isn't there already a Highlight Text function that flashes the tab a different colour. Why not just add $self (or whatever the eve coding equivalent is) to the list of standard highlights? |

clearly you misunderstood. but thanks for your input.
sending a message can get lost, or go unseen. thus the point of having a poke feature...

eliminating the need for third party tools is the goal. some people tire of having multiple applications open. |

Just ask for assignable colors to the mail or neocom icon then, problem solved, no need for an extra redundant irritation. They both have options to flash when you have mail. Of course if that person doesn't answer mail or check mail, why would they want to be poked? Some people just want to be left alone, which is why there is also an auto reject tick box in the settings.
Why are you insisting on having another form of alerting or bothering someone that can be abused and would be turned off by the majority of players? To many chat windows? I have a minimum of 12 tabbed up at all times, and the tabs flash. I know which ones are the important ones, they're tabbed separately.
Additional bells and whistles are not needed for harassing others into action. If they are paying attention and you matter they'll notice, and if you REALLY need more communication then, yes, as Lugh said go 3rd party so the rest of us don't have to deal with redundant option bloat. Organizational tools have been provided, competency is up to the player/organization.
Get some Eve. Make it yours.

If a person misses a message in a chat window they are either not paying attention, paying attention to something else, or not at their keyboard. All of these things can be remedied by that player actively playing the game.
One thing I will endorse is flashing the chat tab a different color if a word you have put on your highlight list is mentioned. I would even go as far as allowing you to assign different colors to different words. You would still have to pay attention to the game but you could color code your priorities.
