So I've been playing the game for about 9 months and want to start training either a dread or carrier pilot. However I'm not sure which is going to have better application in nullsec environment once the capital changes come about. I'm tossing up between archon and naglfar. Carriers seem to be transitioning into DPS platforms similar to that of high end battleships whereas I'm not sure which direction dreads will be going in once the changes are in place.
What are your thoughts and which path would you recommend for a 9 month old player? |

Cap ships take a long commitment. So long, that you are talking about a trade off with time lost for your sub-cap skill goals.
If you know you want some kind of cap ship later, I recommend that you start picking away at support skills now. Things like Advanced Spaceship Command Jump Drive skills Tank skills (Will help your subcaps too) etc.
I started picking away at caps around the same time you are. At less than a year into the game. But I never actually needed a carrier for a couple more years. Our corp based out of a Hi-sec system right next to lo-sec. We just didn't need to cap up for any reason. Until later.
As for choices, Nag is a GREAT ship! So is the Archon. Be aware, they are different races, so the skill tree won't overlap very well. Guns vs Drones. Armor vs Shields. You're talking about 2 very different skill paths here. And my general opinion is that caps should be trained to V's for the most part. Super expensive ships deserve high caliber skills to back them. Bottom line: It's a big commitment of time. Do it right the first time. Think it out.
In my opinion, A carrier is way more usable for the average Joe. Because it can act as a great transport ship as well. That's what I'd recommend you train first

Train for Black Ops. That will get you into the jump drive skills.
I personally don't recommend training capitals, beyond being able to move your stuff around, unless you plan to spend a couple of years training it (not kidding). T2 capital modules take over a month per module to train.
I have an alt with fewer skillpoints but no capital skills, and I consider that alt to be better trained than I am. |

I'm going to be training it up on a fresh account, so I'll basically sub it for a year and forget about it until I need to remap

If you start training skills now you won't have to decide between Dread and Capital until after the changes come out. Be sure to use EveMon to maximize your skill remaps to shorten training time.
You might want to train some minimal skills early so you could use the toon as a scout until it's ready for it's main purpose.
Have you considered buying a character? That's what many people do for caps.
