Eve can get pretty boring at times. Smack talk in local after having ganked or killed someone just to get a rise out of them can create GREAT content. Everything from them just firing back and ranting to incoming wardecs or even more if you're in nullsec. Trash talk is part of what makes eve a sandbox. People who can't stomach it are playing the wrong game. |

modern merc recipe:
2 Cups of station hugging 3 Sprinkles of npc alts - guardian brand. 1 Quart of strawman smacktalk 2 parts forum chest beating 1 part offgrid boost
the strawman is the toughest part, to be a good merc u need all 5 ingredients.

Not really sure where I stand on this, some people can smack talk with great skill, others it more like a tantrum.
In a past life in EvE breaking up low sec pirate gate camps was always a way of producing a barrage of smack, some would last for days, that was fun
As for this line and crossing it, I'm hardened to smack talk (rl experiences) but remember some are not and saying boo to some people will make tears, so keep it in game to be safe, we do have all types in eve even girls

Doing highsec wardecs, I only did smack talk once in local and it wasn't even towards my war target. I was in Zorozih trying to convince my WT to undock and some miner spoke up in local, telling me to shut up. I calmly told the miner to calm down and to go back sucking on rocks since his iron level was low.
As my WT undocked and we duked it out, he started to smart mouth my old corp name (Happy Endings Massage Parlor) and if I was servicing anyone. After I killed and podded my war target, I then told the guy in local that my war was ending and I needed a new corporation to wardec, and included my calling card (zkillboard corp link). And then I asked him, "Is this the service you requested?"
Was in system for over an hour and he never said anything more. Still should have wardecced him but had to run to work.
Just something about me...

Well, thats another thing I was curious about. Do people use that block button a lot, because they hate smacktalk or want to protect themselves of saying EULA breaking things.

It's awesome.

Had some alliance smacktalk us stupidly saying they were going to drop dreads on our tower and take our moon couple of years ago.
They were talking so much smack it was beyond belief . So they turn up with 6 dreads pounding the tower loling at us in local and posting some Russian stuff that wasn't even translatable.
For some reason all the local chat stopped right at the point we drop 70 battleships on them and wrecked them all.
They even triaged some carriers in for good measure.
Always be wary of corps with industrial names and be careful who you smacktalk.

Back when can flipping was a thing, smacktalk skill was really important. You had to convince your target to fight you... But you had to make it fun so he would do it again next week.
It was real art. I loved it.
It was a sophisticated psychological game.
Most of what I see on the forums is very low grade smack.
On the macro level, though, I think players benefit from the added content of someone smacking in local. It entertains bored miners and mission runners, inspires unusual activity, and makes it seem like stuff is happening. |

Always thought it kinda a class thing. Like how mike tyson used to tell his opponents at pre match interviews he was going to eat them. Some guys from the ghetto like him would be intimitdated and he would have an advantage. Other guys would just look at him and be like "what?". You saw the same stuff when tyson fury fought that ukrainian guy last year. The pre match interview was hilarious as klitschko was just looking at him thinking "what are you doing?"
In game smack talk has always been like that for me. Sometimes funny and makes me laugh, sometimes racist and I report and block and the rest of the time I ignore it. Doesn't have much effect on me and not something I was ever into.

I'm curious how people think about these things, as you have alliances like Public Enemy who hardly ever smack talk to people and others like me or CODE. who might do it to much sometimes.

Ok, I think I can change a little of the existing smacktalk paradigm here.
Bad smacktalk: you are a (insert something bad here).
Good smacktalk (I'm omitting all the piracy stuff since piracy is dead):
If you are outside in your rep boat innocently repping both sides of a disagreement to screw up their fight: "I'm here for for your safety. I represent the neighborhood watch"
If they won't undock: create a book mark named "serviceable testicles" and drag it into your cargo hold. Dock up and open trade with your target. Offer him or her that bookmark ... To be helpful.
If your war targets are mad at you for declaring war on them: Act like you think they declared war on you. Demand they drop the wardec.
If a wardec aggressor demands ransom: accept the number, tell them how much you appreciate their business, and tell them you will drop the dec as soon as they flash it to your wallet.
Things that almost always fit in the smacktalk conversation (said to the enemy): 1) hey, my leadership skills suck. Can I join your fleet for bonuses? 2) can you guys spot me some faction ammo?

I keep seeing people say, "There is a line." If there is one I haven't seen it yet. I've been playing this game for a little under 2 months and in that time I've been appalled at the "smack talk" that happens in this game. There is no line, not in combat, not in your attitude toward other players, not in smack talk. <--- That's no my view, it's the view of the folks in the game who think "smack talk is healthy" unless they don't happen to like what's coming across their monitor. Your line is not someone else's line.
By the way, I'm not a fan of smack talk. It's a way of boosting your own ego. Some people use it as a tool to gather intel on other players before they fight them/before they gank them with a blob of plebs and say "gf" in local. Ultimately, in my view, smack talk is the tool of the of folks who lack real confidence and conviction in what they're doing. If you have that you don't need to smack talk. |
