Is there some formula, whereby one can find the locking time from the resolution of your ship and the radius of the target. Does movement, speed etc. of you or the target effect locking time (obviously if you move out of range it effects locking :p)?

Higher scan resolution reduces your lock time. A lower enemy signature radius increases your lock time. Nothing else (except things that change one of the two, like Sensor Dampners) has an effect.
The sensor strength is only involved with how hard you are to jam using ECM. Higher = More difficult. Your max lock range is your max lock range, and can be affected by some modules and a skill, but not your sensor strength. Each race does indeed have its own sensor type, meaning a different type of racial ECM is used against them.

I thought Signature Radius affected damage from missiles?
Along those lines I have never been clear on if sig radius affects the chances of a turret to hit (their version of more damage from missiles).
This is why MWDs are an issue on many ships because it so drastically increases your sig radius and I thought that penalty went further than just meaning someone can target lock you a bit faster.

Well it's definitely connected to turrets as well. Well I suppose wants (lol I wrote wants instead of once ) a ship is targeted it effects your chances of hitting and the amount of damage you deal. But I'm not clued up at all on damage dealing, I've bm'ed a guide and will get to it after the other 10 I also want to read ^^.

Edited by: GC13 on 08/02/2007 18:25:39 Yeah, your signature radius also functions as a way of influencing how much damage is dealt to you. But we were just talking about locking speed. Your speed and direction also influence how much damage turrets do, and your speed can influence missile damage if it's way way high.
Anyway, there's a formula for lock speed floating around somewhere, but I've never verified it, and don't have a link handy at the moment (accursed computer lab...).

Apparently:
(10000/X)/(asinh(Y))
Where:
X = scan resolution of your ship Y = sig radius of the target asinh = the inverse of the hyperbolic function (asinh(x) = ln(x + sqrt(x^2+1))
If you're having problems with the asinh, then this page may help you visualise it.
Humpalot: With regard to turrets, your signature radius is compared to its signature resolution and the tracking guide demonstrates how this is important when determining a hit.
I haven't seen the actual mechanics or a possible forumla for this, so whether it's a simple signature radius/signature resolution comparison or something more complicated, I don't know.

Hehe now there's an understatement :). Thanks for rooting the formula out, I knew someone would be able to provide me with it. I'll have a closer look at it when my brain is fully in gear .
