Hello fellow industrialists,
Recently, I dipped my... head into PI, and set up a few planets. Admittedly, a few of the skills are still in the cooker, including commandcenter upgrades (III, currently going for IV). My main goal, though somewhat irrelevant for this topic, is a self-sustained production line of R0-P4, spanning six planets.
The problem I'm having at the moment, it that while setting up my extractors to cover for a weeked away, the uneven yield of cycles is causing my storages to overflow during the first few days, wasting the precious resources that are needed to keep the factories running during the last days of poor-yield cycles.
So my question is this: Is there any way of setting up a secondary, "buffer" storage?
I was planning something like:
[Extractor]->[storage]->[storage]->[processor]
With the materials from the extractor routed to the second storage, will they start to collect in the first one once the second is filled, or will the whole ordeal just be a waste of 250k ISK (and untold amounts of R0)? And if so, is there a better alternative?
Thanks in advance! |

While a bit pricey in terms of ISK and power, use a spaceport instead of one of the storage containers for twice the amount of space. So with your set-up:
[Extractor]-->[Spaceport]-->[Processor]-->[Spaceport or Storage] |

Launchpads use exactly the same PG as storage facilities, hold twice as much, and make it so much easier to move products to/from the customs office in orbit.
Their major downside is the hefty CPU cost, but that is rarely a consideration on an extraction/harvest planet (PG is your bottleneck). |

like it has been said already, storage units are useless, spaceports are the way to go. on factory planets you can (and should) have two spaceports.
if the planet youre working on is producing too much and it will actually hurt production efficiency to have another factory, then just increase the cycle time on the xtractors and dont refresh them too often, so they keep running at low efficiency. just cycle them when they get too low. |

As far I know it's not possible to link 2 storage.
So for a 'intial' storage bin you would also need to build an 'initial' processor. Eating into PG and reducing your production.
My advice would be stash your excess P0 at spaceport, launch and sell, you might not make as much per hour off your excess as if it where refined but it's something and won't eat into your powergrid. |

You can link multiple storage, but have to manually move the goods between them, as storage units are neither consumers nor producers. |

Thanks a lot for all the tips! I'll look into switching up some storages to launchpads befor ethe weekend :) |

Which makes me wonder if anyone uses storage pads. If they were bigger in size than spaceports or had much less power grid, then they might be useful. PI Profit Calculator: calculates your profits and taxes of any PI product depending on how you built them! |

The one advantage they do have is cost. When I'm relocating an extraction unit way out far from my main launchpads and processors, I will use a regular storage to hold raw P0. I then move it in bulk with an expedited transfer to the expensive launch pads to be processed. This allows me to chase after hot spots in distant locations without spending too much on structures. I try to avoid it when I can and it does introduce some extra babysitting, especially if you program a longer extraction. Being in low sec though, most of my extractions are usually 24h or 12h which usually don't fill the storage up. I imagine this wouldn't be as useful on a null/WH planet since your extractions will be much larger in volume. |

i use storage units - 3 per planet. They just hold all the goodies until you want them. Expedite transfer to LP and send em up to you at the Customs Office. You may need to launch the raw materials too to make room at the LP for incoming goods - then when finished send it back down. |

If you use 2 storages, you cal always route 50% to each one. This way you have one big storage. |
