It appears that the maximum range for remote sensor damps is 45km optimal with 90km falloff, using an RSD2 with level 5 in Frequency Modulation and Long Distance Jamming. So damp effects at 200km occur with probability ... what?

50% chance to "miss" at optimal + falloff. 100% chance to "miss" at optimal + 2 * falloff.
No effeciency reduction, a damp either works or works not depending on your roll each activation.

That isn't true. It use the same hit chance formula as turrets do for falloff, which means the hit chance never is 0.
Hit chance = (1/2)^(((max(0,Range-Optimal))/Falloff)^2)
So with range 200, optimal 45, falloff 90, that's ~13% chance your dampener will be successful. Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

Edited by: Aramendel on 13/02/2007 20:16:33 True, you are correct there.
Although a 6.25% hit chance at 2* falloff is practically about as good as 0%. 3 damps have then together about the same chance to "jam" a target as a single 3.5 point ECM has vs a 20 sensorstrength target.

you are leaving out: ship bonuses (from Celestis class cruisers & derivatives) rig bonus (I think it is 15% bonus to optimal but I am not in game now...)
so you can do better than is being described

Edited by: Aramendel on 13/02/2007 22:21:05 - ship boni do not effect range, only damperner strength
- 3 t1 range rigs give damps at max skill lvl a whooping 26k optimal range boost. Will boost hit chance at 200k from 13% to 24% (on the celestis, on a recon with 2 rig slots thats a 20% chance), but I wouldn't really consider it a worthwhile investment

Better fit dampener strenght rigs (especially on non - bonused ships) and you need less successful rolls to damp something effectively.
Or if you are in junk ship, don't bother with rigs at all. -------- ..... |

Well, if you try to dampen something at sniper distances you only need one sucessful roll anyway. Your target ship would have to have a targeting range of 480k to keep one of 200k with 1 t2 damperner on it from a ship without bonus and lvl 4 in the damp spec skill.

I'd kill for a ship with a SD falloff bonus instead of a SD strength bonus.
