OK, I'm pretty new but I'm hooked. I've got a spare couple hundy coming in from a side job and my old monitor is like 9 years old but still decent. So I need a new monitor that is, and will continue to be, good for playing EVE.
I'm looking to get a new 19 in widescreen LCD. Yes, has to be widescreen because I also dev software on it so I need the widescreen I think. I'm leaning toward this one:
Acer AL1916WAbd http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009091
Open to other opinions. Won't be running dual monitor because my desk is just too small for that.
Sorry if this is the wrong area, it seemed like the best place to post.

Well widescreen is GREAT for Eve because it supports the necessary resolutions in full.
I'm running Eve on a Dell 2405FP, at 1920x1200, and it's sexy!
I would say go for more than 19 inch if your budget can support it. Those Dells are very nice, only thing that would make me give up mine is the 30 inch version, which unfortunately costs as much as a car.

i'd also really really recomend widescreens.
having jsut upgraded form a 20.1" dell widescreen to a 24" i'd say 'sod it, buy the 24"' but they are not the cheapest things ever made.
20"'ers are cool and do a good job though. Warning: May contain flaming, trolling, swearing, typos, crimes against grammar, obscure reference to old films, in jokes, rambling, ranting and references to EvE. |

I have a few friends that have these IIlyma
Personally I use Vision master 450 pro
and it is pretty much TDB's 2 of them does make the bench bend a little as their combined weight is close to 120 lbs but the picture oh man the picture it just puts the TFT's to shame but then again any decent CRT will out do just about any TFT.

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-5205
its got hdcp, for the hd video and movies that will require it, and a decent enough price to size ratio. it wont kill you in costs $329 in the US right now

Sure, you can get a Dell...
...But really, why not upgrade both your monitor and your TV at the same time? I was playing on 19"-20" CRT monitors for a very long time. After Christmas I figured, the hell with it - pitched both my TV as well as my monitor, and picked up a 42" 1080p Westinghouse LCD HDTV.
Yes, it's far more expensive than a normal LCD monitor. But before you spend a few hundred dollars on something lesser, a few things to consider.
* LCD HDTV prices are dropping at quite a pace. This monitor cost over 3k USD at the start of 2006. When I picked it up, it was sub-1500, brand spankin' new.
* The desktop space you pick up is insane, as is the PIP option.
* If you're currently on a CRT monitor and ever use, or plan to use, gaming consoles or good DVD players, it'd be foolish not to consider going this route.
The only caveat is that with the specific monitor I mentioned, there's one minor glitch I've experienced in my PC use - if you're resizing your desktop (or are running a program that will fullscreen in a different resolution), it may glitch out and require you to switch channels to fix it. Other than that, I can endorse this as the absolute best solution for both a computer monitor as well as a TV.
(If you do go this route, read up on HDTV LCD monitors. You want a very fast refresh time to start with. I love the one I picked, but with every month that passes, new deals are offered, and some better features may be within the wallet's reach.)

I'm thinking this is the one for me:
Samsung 204BW
I've got actual (gasp) brand loyalty toward Samsung. Dell's are great but they aren't as cheap as the Samsung and I bet the quality is the same.

I have one of them 24 inch dells too and 1900x1200 resolution and I'll probably buy a bigger Dell when this one starts to fade. EVE and LoTR Online look fantastic on it.
Think to look for in LCD monitors is how well they represent black. Google "Black Crush" to understand what the problem is.
The last LCD I had did an extremely poor job on things that were inherently black or dark, nighttime scenes. It lost all detail and contrast, things just merged into one big black blob.
The Dell monitors don't have this problem. Dark objects, night scenes look great.
Make sure whatever you go with doesn't have any problems with dark/nighttime objects.

Anything 24' or bigger. The high res widscreen in EVE FTW, I can keep corp/local/alliance/gang all open at the same time on the left with a huge overview on the right with tons of room for gang and drone info and still have as much "ship space" in the middle as a 19' moniter. I have a 2407fpw and it is truly awseome. Sucks though because once I go to play eve on a regular 19', or worse, a 17' it looks like crap to me. _______________________________ Idea stolen from DS:

I have one and its great, bargain indeed
i upgraded from a 17 CRT and i am really happy, although a 21 inc would have made my eve experience supercharged :)

I just bought (a week ago) a 22' LCD. ASUS MW221u. For 400 Euros. That is my first LCD. I select this one because of good reviews compared to others 22's. He is currently the fastest 22 LCD (2ms) and as googd with game than the best 19's. Drawback is the TN panel with less than perfect view angles, but really, after using it during a week, it is not an issue. That would for others people looking at the screen from a wide angle, but really for the user, it have NO impact at all. Dead pixels policy is also good with Asus. It is a 1680x1050. Perfect for my 7900 GTX.
24' would have been a good choice (assuming there is one with fast panel rendering) but the pixel would have been to large to be handled with my graphic card with other games like Prey, Fear and so on. Keep that in mind when selecting an LCD. They are not good if not use at native resolution.

Edited by: Nezz Jaran on 13/02/2007 21:19:42 I've got the Samsung 204BW. It's not bad, but I have lightbleed on the edges, and I can see a little ghosting with the darker colors.
Last I checked (maybe a week ago), the TripleHead by Matrox doesn't support 3 wide screens, nor does it support the higher resolutions I run at. The DualHead Digital does, but then you're split between two screens. I'm waiting for a TripleHead Digital to be released before I do that.
Also, for everyone using LCD TVs for Eve, what kind of resolution do you get?
Oh, and does anyone else have problems with color banding with LCDs?

I also have a Dell 2407 and can't recommend it highly enough. Looks amazing but is now somewhat dwarfed by my Sharp LC42XD1E. At 1920x1080 it is truly stunning. If you keep a close eye on the Dell prices the 2407 has been known to drop to just over ú500 which, yes, sounds alot but is in fact a fantastic price for this monitor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "In the wake of DDaisy's Megathron"

I got a 19" widescreen and for Eve purposes I am dissapointed. I used to play Eve at 1600x1200 but I am now stuck at 1440x900. I didn't even think about it when I bought the monitor. Now my screen is a lot more squished than I am used to, and it sucks.

I just bought a BenQ FP241W 24" widescreen - plays Eve and other games at 1920 x 1200 and its amazing, especially jumping from a 17" tft.
Cost just under ú600 and is an 8 bit panel so colour management for CS2 work is spot on once calibrated.
No ghosting at all in games and it has component, vga, dvi, hdmi and composite inputs, PIP, USB etc.
Also plays 1080P movies due to resolution and they look awesome.
