Edited by: Vir Hellnamin on 14/02/2007 08:29:28 hmm... maybe asking in the Known Issues & Workarounds forums, someone there could have some tips to try.
Apparently some computers currently have problems with RealTek audio drivers. -- V.H. |

Aye. I have the exact same problem of my PC randomly (in space) freezing and then performing a cold reset (i hear the ATX recycle the power switch) and after starting up getting a "Windows recovered from a critical error" dialog.
The workaround is indeed to turn all sound off in the options menu. It's a bit bland, but manageable. If an actual fix is known i'll be very interested to know of it.

Some sort of hardware issue I'd guess. Is the computer temp OK? When it restarts, if you go into the BIOS there should be a page detailing the current temps etc.

i use the realTek sound card and have no problems, but would agree is faultly hardware/driver somewhere

Turning off sound and making sure all your drivers are up to date is a good start; otherwise it could well be a heat problem as Eve is very hard on the CPU - more so than most games, which offload work to the graphics card.

If your computer is restarting, you probably have major issues.
Restarting your computer is XP's base response to a Blue Screen of Death. (Which is why you don't see it anymore).
Check Dr. Watson files. I suspect you might have some RAM issues. I'd check those.

Eve is very hard on every part of hardware... CPU is hotter than ever and the RAM too, and the chipset. On the overall, it is much more using motherboard related ressources than the graphic card. It's not an issue by itself if you know what to do, it just has to be watched closely.
Open your computer, take the dust out, check all the fans are working properly, that no air entrance from ouside is filled with dust. If it is still not enough, you may be able to add fans to the case, to move cables outside the air flow inside the case and some more little things.
If you are overclocking and it overheats, just stop overclocking, 10% performance is not worth wasting 90% of your gameplay...
If it is still not enough, you may come to a bit more technical stuff that could void warranty on some parts of your computer. Changing the CPU cooler is usually fine, there are many that will have much better cooling performance thant the stock cooler. (and does not void warranty if you follow some rules stated in the CPU warranty) Changing the graphics card cooler voids the warranty on the graphic card, is not always easy to do, will put you at risk of breaking your hardware, this may be really efficient, but it is at your own risk.
If you have time to spend on such things, do it. My computer is running at low noise with everything going high as 40-50ŚC max when playing Eve. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Flying Vexor and Ishkur, Myrmidon was too slow, got ganked by 3 BC and a Megathron...

The cheap way to discover if you have a heat problem is to take the side of the case off, and point a desk fan at the innards if you have one.

Heh-heh -- I actually ran my computer that way for a while until I finally broke down and bought a new CPU coolor.

I use a 3D solid modeling program at work (along with 5 million programs open at once) on dual 2ghz processors. Neither of which have fans on the heat sinks. I check the temp occasionally and it might get close to 50C but it usually stays near 40C. So fans aren't always as important as one might think.

I had a similar problem about a year ago. It turned out to be dodgy RAM. The odd thing was that EvE was the only program that would cause the problem. Nothing else, including cpuburn or memtest386, would trigger it. In the end I worked out it was the RAM that was the problem by borrowing some RAM from work.

I am 99% sure it is because i use on board sound (never really cared much about high quality sound over enough sound to be functional) and there is a driver flaw in the board drivers. It probably isn't my thermal cutout because i experienced that yesterday when my processor heatsink wasn't clipped in firmly enough. It shuts the machine down alright, but doesn't restart it. So this is more likely the sound driver crapping itself and triggering a cold reset. |

I have the same problem but it happens only at combat missions, beside those missions i can run eve the whole day without any interruption, no matter how much vessels cross my path or how much animations are shown, so i guess, at least for me its some explosion sound or animations wich causes that cold reboot.

Had this happen a few months ago, pc kept reseting. Turned out that like Emily said, for me it was the RAM, new memory and the problem went away
Wish id found it out before i had spent more money on a new and somewhat expensive cpu cooler, thinking it was a heat issue
