Edited by: The Pointless on 19/02/2007 23:25:42 I have a question: Why do you want joystick control?
For the most part, it would be trivial at best...

Because weaving through the roids in an interceptor would be bad ass

Skill? Erm, in case nobody's noticed, hits from weapons fire are based on numerous variables, including your gunnery skills, possible mixed in with a roll of a (virtual) dice. It's like in Final Fantasy, you may see the attack "look" as if it hit, but that's no indication that you did hit - the damage number is.

For all those who think they need a joystick to play eve, a mouse is by far better. With a much better acuracy. And I say this from my own experience. I am a semi-decent space dogfighter.

This wins.
And no, Eve is not twitch based. 'Skill' in fighting? The whole point of MMORPGs is that the skills for the actual dirty work are in-game skills, so anyone can attain them. Only the thinking is kept in real life. It would be horrific to have to train T2 guns, and get good at twitch combat, and have a lag free connection to be able to PvP.
In short, STFU noob. -

Would be kewl just to direct the ship's flight with a stick now and then. All the guns and stuff would have to still be click, boom.
On second though, learning the best weave patterns to get the highest transversals would be annoying.

I think it could be done right, although it would have to be left for EvE 2.
All ship classes could be piloted differently. An interceptor would be twitched based, a carrier pilot would be sending formations and attack patterns to fighter drones, and a dread pilot would be shifting around shields and making sure his tank is sustainable. Amarr would have to deal with lasers overheating, ect... it would be fun! This isn't the right place for these types of discussions though.

Knowing how many play this game under the influence, anything that makes the game require more hand-eye coordination is probably asking for trouble.

I'd enjoy it, but it's not going to happen for technical reasons.
Because: Currently the communication that's required between the server to navigate your ship is really low. The commands are approach, orbit, keep at range, fly into directon A (double clicking with the mouse on the background ). You issue the command once and your client, server and the other clients are happy and can 'predict' your flight path for a relatively long time with low error without needing to communictate much with eachother. It's just solving some equations.
But if everyone flies with an analog joystick, the whole effort to keep everything updated and in synch like the 200 clients, who participate in speedy fleetbattle, will be multiple times higher. Everyone would send changing directions and speeds to the client multiple times per second and the server and the clients need to get and process this data as soon and accurate as possible, so that every sees approximately the same things going on on his screen.
Big code change, more hardware, more bandwith and it will probably cause a lot of trouble on not so good connections. I've played freelancer on a laggy connection once and the flight path looked like **** and aiming was impossible and there were a lot less ships involved than in an EVE fleet-battle. ------ No.1 reason to post with an alt: Avoiding that your main looks too silly. |
