it would be nice for those of us like me who came back to eve after revelations to kind of see what is going on addressed. There's a lot of new stuff to play with, but what about these issues? When I've played with all the new stuff.... I need to know the mechanics are solid.
Oh, and to all those who get scammed, really I'm sorry! But what can the devs do? I see a lot of fix this but not how. suggestions always get more notice than not!

While I enjoy the freedom CCP gives us when it comes to making game choices I would agree with you that we need more information especially when it concerns exploits.

Originally by: Wylker I have only been playing eve for about 9 months. During that time it has quickly become my heads above favorite MMO. However there are some things I see looming on the horizon that could very potentially ruin the game for me. NOTE: I said ruin the game for me, not in general. The reason I am writing this post is because I think my opinion may very well be shared by many of my fellow pod-pilots.
There seems to be a great vision that is eve, it involves doing all the things that many MMOs want to do but doing it better than anyone else. The level of player decision is unprecedented. But I feel that right now there are so many unanswered questions/problems up in the air that absolutely need to be addressed. I have done extensive reading into dev interviews, blogs, and even some forum posts. I am requesting a formal "State of the Game" address that actually focuses on addressing the myriad of issues facing the game right now.
The address should take the form of: Here is an issue, here is what we think of it, here is how it will be addressed (or not addressed) and this is the time frame. In the past this development team has been congratulated over and over again on the level of honesty and integrity with which they deal with the player base. Please continue it with this type of address, that actually contains information and not vague ideas.
I will conclude with a brief list of some things that I believe should be addressed, which I am sure is not comprehensive. If others want to add something please feel free, but I would also appriciate people showing their support in getting some real concrete and straight answers.
Starting list:
1) Node stability - is there any real solution for this? It seems that adding hardware capacity is not the answer, as it hasn't really worked so far. 2) Exploits - there is a lot of confusion over what is allowed and what is not. Most of the confusion comes from issues which are more ethical in nature than those that are truely hacks(tm). Examples: Logging out of bubbles / login traps, aggro timers, intentional node crashes. The question again is do you consider this ok or not and what will be done. 3) Fleet combat - It has been said again and again that the devs do not want "he who blobs best wins" style of play. However, nothing is really being done to prevent it. Should a band of 300 low skill point cruiser pilots be able to kill 50 battleships piloted by 20 mil SP characters? In the real world it would seem that they could, but is it what the game should be or not? After watching 300 The movie trailers, I know where my vote goes :) 4) POS Warfare - I think theres enough out there on this where it justifies an official response. 5) Low Sec - what the heck is the point, this encompses mission running, pirating, mining etc.
These are what I would call "big rock" issues that are going to fundamentally affect what kind of players continue playing this game. I believe that making the wrong decisions will give eve a larger player base of the "WoW calibre" player and will lose everyone that plays eve for the game that it was designed to be.
On a final note, I know that some of these things have been lightly addressed in some blogs etc. However, I feel that there has been a decided lack of consistancy in the hows, and a non-existance of the whens.
Dev team, please be stand up, and avoid political non-answers to these questions and help us to understand what you want and where we are going.
I'd like to add game balance to the list. (Nanophoons, nos, etc.)

Originally by: Serendib Making video blogs of developers talking about the game and explain is a very nice ideia. I recently saw a video blog from one of the upcomming MMORPG and it looked pretty cool. If the Devs want to know what MMORPG did that i can tell them just send me a evemail :) but i preffer not to say it in forum so i won't be accused of making publicity to other games :)

Well, I thought I'd give this one more boost to the top before I let it die. If you agree, have your friends/corpmates/alliance jump on board and /sign up. I think having some good dev communication would be a giant step towards eliminating the 2387492387 threads per day *****ing about the same stuff and hopefully give the veteran players some hope for the future.

Originally by: Andreas Syneticus My opinion on the matter is that I believe there's too much focus on new features, instead of bolstering the EvE product's core. You're right, throwing more hardware at it doesn't solve the problems - getting a competent coder that's skilled in network optimizing is money better spent.
I design and build supercomputers for a living. Systems bigger than what CCP uses.
Thinking that you can solve the lag problems with faster code or faster servers or a better database means you fundamentally do not understand what the problem is.
The problem is very simple: The programming is set up so that a single system has to run on a single node. As long as that is true, you will not be able to solve the lag problem. If you make the node four times as fast so it can now support 2000 ships instead of 500 ships, the only thing that will change is you'll now have 2000 ships in the system when the lag becomes unbearable instead of 500.
Let me put this another way. You never see more than 700 ships in Jita. What if you put Jita on its own node, and made that node fast enough through hardware or code so that it could support 800 ships? Would that get rid of the lag in Jita?
NO! It wouldn't make a difference at all. Why? Because the reason there arn't more than 700 ships in Jita now isn't because more than 700 ships don't want to be there, it's because once you get about 600 ships in there, the system gets so lagged that more people cna't get in.
Making the system faster just makes it attractive for more people to come, until it gets to the point that the lag is too bad again.
The only way to fix the lag is to fundamentally change the way EVE works - you can't allocate processing power based on systems. You have to allocate processing power based on users. One node handles 100 users. If you get more than 100 users in the system, then you have to be able to have two nodes running that system. If you get 400 users in the same grid, then the code has to be able to have 4 nodes running that grid.
If you can't do that, you'll always have more users showing up in a particular place than the processing power allocated to that place is able to handle. _____ Lifewire is a big, ugly, mean... carebear. |

America has a "State of the Union" speech, this is what Oveur's proposed speech would be.
Can I humbly suggest that since this is a truely international game, we adopt the British way, and instead of "State of the game" we have "The Queens Speech"

after tonights events, there are most definately serious issues to be addressed here. all in all, some form of update on how grievances with the game mechanics are being handled would appease a large portion of the dedicated members of this great game. if only to leave us feeling a little less in the dark. great post. /signed. |

I don't completely agree with every point the OP made, but then in life who DOES? There are enough known issues floating that a video interview/blog makes a lotta sense, especially knowing how many would watch you tube, versus how few read the forums.

I haven't been playing this game for too long, I'd say about 2 - 3 months now.
Obviously I haven't really played it enough to get to grips with all the problems of the game. One thing I have found though is that the game is truly inspiring. The amount of things you are allowed to do. The way the game forces you to think about things instead of just mindlessly clicking buttons and what looks to be an enormous amount of effort for a game.
I don't know about every major event linked to CCP, but I know they are a good company, hence the no shares policy. You also have to realise, whether they like it or not, to actually go and work for EVE you have to move to Iceland. I don't know about you but that most probably isn't a country at the top of my "places to go before I die" list. So I can honestly understand why they might not have enough manpower to efficiently cope with all the problems :P
Maybe being just a little bit more patient and letting them get on with what ever they have to do might be better? I don't know about you but it seems better than acting like a WoW player, constantly complaining about all the already well known issues of the game? :)

Edited by: Armundo on 30/03/2007 01:37:17 /signed I would love to see some kind of Quarterly update on what's going on with solving the many bugs etc. And next to that have like a yearly event, together with the alliance tournament or not, that does things on a larger scale.
