I believe my signature may be of use to you.

Your catalyst is not spitting enough DPS, many rats use active reps.. That is what Moonlit Raid meant. The signature says to use more brute force lol

So, the Serpentis Admiral is a battleship-level NPC, bounty about 800k, correct?
Typically, for PVE, you need to match your ship size with the target ship size, or bring friends.
Catalyst is a destroyer, and they're very nice for killing frigates, and even cruisers if you're good, but as mentioned above, will come up short when you're trying to damage battleship-level hitpoints and repair rates. So what to do?
- Training battleship (Megathron) with T1 large weapons may take a little bit, 2-3 weeks (you're not training for T2 weaponry, but you are training some better armor and shield skills), but the ship is expensive and slow, so you may lose it to roaming null gangs (or even solo PVP'ers). But it will kill the rats ok.
- Training up for a battlecruiser such as the Brutix, with cruiser-sized (medium) T2 weapons will take a while, and then you'll be in the same situation as with a Catalyst hunting cruiser-sized rats: you'll need good support skills and know what you're doing.
- Training HAC (Ishtar, Deimos) with T2 cruiser-sized T2 weapons (and/or large/sentry T2 drones) will take even longer, but HACs can put out battleship-level DPS, and they're more nimble than battleships. However, they're just as expensive.
- Forming a fleet and throwing a number of your fellow Horde Catalysts at the rats will probably do the job, but you have to share the rewards somehow and keep them interested long term.

You're not doing enough DPS to beat their ability to rep. So you need to apply more DPS to be able to kill them.
Answer is you probably need one or more of the following:
1. improve skills in the relevant weapon type(s) 2. More guns (but in a destroyer this is probably not the case) 3. Bigger guns (usually means bigger ship) 4. Better guns (like T2 or faction) 5. Bigger ship 6. Implants that help increase your DPS 7. modules that help improve your damage application (improve tracking, improve damage, etc.) 8. different ammo
You also of course need to make sure you are engaging (piloting) in such a way that your damage application is optimal - at the perfect range, etc. - based on the weapon and ammo types you are fitting.
There is no single answer or magic weapon or whatnot you need to find.
The only thing I can see from your post is you are flying a t1 destroyer with t1 blasters...this is not going to be a particularly high DPS set-up.

I would think that a catalyst potentially could kill a non-officer NPC BS. I would want to know what kind of damage notifications you are getting. You can have them display but you can also go back in your log and see them as well. If you know where to look you can even go back and view a log file in text format that recorded all of your damage notifications.
What you are looking for is a lot of good hits and few "barely scratched" or "missed" type of notifications. If you are getting a lot of weak hits then you need to pilot or fit differently.

The above link is a flash based tutorial that does a good job of explaining the basics of tracking / gunnery in Eve. It is not an end all be all but it is a good starting point. |

So that link shows the Shadow Serpentis Admiral having 46% Kinetic and 56% Thermal resists. It says his armor repper repairs 738 HPs and has a 71% chance to repair on a 10 second cycle time. That means every 10 seconds he has a 71% chance to repair that amount. Since his resists average out to about half for the two damage types that you are doing with blasters that means you'll have to do about double that just to break even. It also shows his shields repairing at 22.8 HP/s but that is only at full regen which exists at around 25-35% shields, above or below that the number goes down and since you will have him at nearly zero when you are into his armor it should not matter much.
So we'll do some math:
0.71 X 738 = 523.98 I'll round to 524. So he will average around 52.4 HP/S repair since it's every 10 seconds. So you will have to do about 105 DPS maybe a little more to break his tank. So if your theoretical damage is more than say 125 DPS or more then likely you could be killing him if you learned how to pilot your ship better or added some tracking through modules or implants or skills.
Keep in mind there is more than one way to improve your tracking. If you push your range out you will have better tracking. Also if you slow down your orbit your tracking will improve. Blowing up your opponents sig radius with a friend using a target painter might help but the BS is already much larger than the sig resolution of the small guns on the cat.
and if you are running out of ammo and having to reload during a fight that will make things more difficult so reload before you start shooting him if that is the case. |

Also bear in mind you need to be dealing Kinetic/Thermal damage to deal with Serpentis rats, which surprisingly is a point that's been missed out thus far. Ideally you'd want to be using Medium or Large lasers or Heavy Missiles to deal with Battleship rats effectively. If lasers you'll want to have a laser bonused ship that's cap friendly, laser boats are notoriously hungry for cap.
I personally much prefer using lasers just now as they're much less wasteful on ammo if your using faction crystals. In this case a Large Energy Nos would be very beneficial and help you kill him off more quickly whilst recharging your cap. If your chosen ship has the bandwidth use a heavy drone or Sentry's to help dish out some extra DPS.

Lasers are EM/Thermal. The hybrids that the Catalyst (and the rest of the Gallente ships) use do Kinetic/Thermal already. This is why it probably wasn't mentioned; she's already doing the correct damage.
It's just a matter of delivering 600-800 DPS.

Speak up in the general or newbie channel and someone will probably come help kill them. If you're not too far from a hub.

When I was a wee little noob, I was able to take down a baron in my rail cormorant, soo, I would imagine that with the right fit, you could do the same with these ships.
P.S. It did take me 15 minutes of shooting to kill him though....

It had trouble with rare rats, but that was because I had crappy skills. The normal belt rats are fairly easy in a battlecruiser though.
Even if you were deep in blue territory and did not need to worry about hostiles just how slow a BS warps from belt to belt will be a huge reduction in bounty ticks.
To me it would seem something cruiser sized would be best for belt ratting. I've done it in a BC and it works ok but feels a bit slow and fat. T1 cruisers will work but you'll have to learn how to use the ship as little mistakes in a cruiser can lead to "oh ****" moments with the wrong spawn. But then again cruisers are so cheap they pay for themselves in just a few spawns.
The main thing to understand with belt ratting is that you are doing it for the rare spawns in most cases. So if you can't kill them then you really need to refigure what you are doing.
The main thing to remember IMHO is that the best ship in Eve is friendship so if you have friends around and you get a special spawn then point it, kill it's buddies and ask a friend to help come kill it if you can't break it's tank. Then just split the isk value of the mods that drop with him.
Another option for you is anomalies. I don't recall which are the easiest ones but I do seem to recall that there are some with all small ships that if you can kite them all and kill at range you can do them in a small ship.
If you really like the small ships you can look into T2 small ships as setting that as a goal would not take too long. Either that or start working towards a cruiser. You can play around in EFT a bit to see which you think will work for you. You can't go wrong either way. You'll be training the same support skills and you'll need to train most of it anyways so you won't be wasting training no matter which direction that you take. |

Adhi; I am just wondering if any of this helped or if you've had any better luck with this? It would be nice to know how this worked out for you so I can know what to tell other new players with similar questions. |
