I will not let this pass by, it happens too much and you doing it should be ashamed of yourselves, seriously. How on earth can you sit there and tell someone to Speak better english or other words to that effect when 90% of us (myself included) aren't even speaking correct English anyway? The cheek of some people when talking to others is appalling, the audacity to think that someone is inferior or their opinions do not matter as much as yours simply because english isn't their first language. Damn... this is the first time i've been ashamed to be a member of this community because of something I didn't do myself, if it continues to escalate then I probably won't be a member for much longer, I cannot abide people being rude for no reason. Really, it speaks volumes about you all.

You see, a prime example of what i'm talking about. I wasn't including myself in the group that use English correctly, I do think I use it well enough to be understood in most situations though. Really, isn't being understood all we want when we're talking on here? Just think about it the next time you're getting ready to bash someone for bad english, it may not be their first language.

Edited by: ScreamingLord Sutch on 24/02/2007 02:22:38 People come to the boards to get a point across.
They deem it important enough it reach an audience of thousands, yet some cannot be bothered to spend the time or effort to make sure their post is understandable. The thread that got you so riled up has nothing to do with mocking a persons poor English. I have great respect for people who take the trouble to make a coherent point, more so when their first langauge is not English.
I have no time or respect for people who make 92 word run-on sentence incoherent gibberish in phone text message speak. I also think it was rude of him to waste the time of hundreds of people who had to waste time trying to decypher that post.

The rule is, generally, only under terms of the "Pot, Kettle" agreement. That is, you may criticize another's writing of the language only when said writing is itself being critical of another, for the pwnage factor.
Unless such writing is completely unintelligible. I mean, most people do make a decent effort to be comprehensible, but others just look like they type by inserting the entire keyboard into their mouths and biting down until something appears on screen. Whence, LOLing may be in order.

For the love of God at least try and make your posts coherant (not the OP). It's not as if everyone gets flamed. When people don't make the effort to use punctuation and paragraphing it makes my eyes hurt and the baby jesus cry. Presumably we are here to communicate. When some 'lol' punctuating pre-teen spews undecipherable gibberish I feel like my brain cells are being murdered trying to divine content from it. Communication does not happen.
English is not my first language. It's not even my second or third. And how about that, no grammar or spelling flames yet.
Null content plus communications skills which make an inbred trailer park dweller look like a Harvard graduate equal flames. That's just the nature of the net, not just this particular forum.

Bad spelling and grammar is acceptable. Each communicates as best as he can. That this is an english forum is no excuse. Proper English, is all well and good, but requiring everyone to have an English major is laughable. Racist, too.
Writing gibberish is NOT acceptable. If you can write english well enough to present a coherent (more or less) message, you can sure as hell use commas and periods. Not doing that is kind of disrespectful to those that read it. If someone should take 3 minutes to read it, you can sure as hell spend an extra 1 minute to make it non-gibberish.

I don't ask that people have excellent or even good writing skills, but when someone writes an utterly incomprehensible english that takes minutes decipher i can't accept that. When someone creates a post with just a single giant super-paragraph i'm not going to try to read it and tell them to fix it before i do.
Like i said before i don't expect excellent or even good spelling/grammer, but if it's to the point that it's unreadable that's a problem. If i can't understand you you can't expect me to overlook your grammer issue.
I actually had to turn down an applicant to our corp once because of his grammer. I mean if i can bearly process his application i can't expect our corpmembers to have to put up with it on a regular basis either. __________________________

I hate people like this to. There is someone in my corp that believes you can only be intelegent if you can spell every word you want to say. Yes it helps get your points across, but it does not make them less valid. I just hate people who think spelling and speech ability is a sign of intellegence.

The thread in question is a stream of consciousness that was not even interpreted into speech before being typed out.
I don't care if someone uses short versions of words, horribly improper grammar, can't spell for their life, and doesn't know where to put their prepositions. That's fine. Maybe they aren't good at English, or it isn't their first language, or they were in a hurry.
What bothers me is when people just type whatever the next word is that comes to mind until they feel like they've got their ideas down. No punctuation, no paragraphing, and no care about how much time it might take to read. Yeah it's understandable if you sift through it and have the patience not to give up, but if you want someone to care what you say, care about saying it.
That's all we ask here. Benco, I know where you're coming from, but this is not a case of second language, it's a case of not caring. We're lucky there were spaces in that post. ---------

Not necessarily, but if someone can't make the extra effort to write properly, why would I take the extra effort to decipher what they're writing because they were too lazy to fix it?
Quote:

I probably have a form of dyslexia as well, since it takes about 30 times as long time for me to read a post that isn't spelled and punctuated decently, compared to one that is. So I could argue that the people who don't make some extra effort to write properly are insensitive and are mocking me because I can't read what they're typing.

Look, there's English as a second language and then there's f'ing retarded "I can't be bothered" forum posting. The latter is what people complain about.
Use paragraphs, take the time to spell out the damn words etc. ESL is not an excuse to argue that you don't even know the basics of formatting paragraphs in a legible manner since the same principles apply for all Germanic languages.

I'm swedish, and think spelling and punctuating properly is not just about language, but communication.
Spelling-mistakes and poor punctuation create distortions that make posts even harder to read (especially if you're not native-english). So out of respect for the people that aren't native, please spell properly and punctuate well-enough, and it will be a lot easier to communicate.
If indeed communication is what you're trying to achieve. If you just want to spam random gibberish, then I suppose there's a place for that as well (just not here).

Edited by: Hasak Rain on 24/02/2007 05:49:12 Mozilla Firefox has a built in spell checker if some people have trouble spelling words for whatever reason. Heck, I usually misspell a couple words a paragraph but the checker points them out. However, that is more due to my two finger typing technique than anything else.
The only thing that irritates me when reading posts are those that are all one very long paragraph or every other word is an abbreviation. I just can't be bothered reading something that takes twice as much effort to decipher than it should.
There is also a big difference between a poster who hasn't mastered the English language very well and one who is 14 yrs old and thinks it makes them look cool to type out messages like a moron.

I live in the US, and the English language is my ONLY language. I know...learn other languages, but I am not that smart really.
I dont tell other people to spell correctly, hell I dont most of the time myself. As long as a person can understand and be understood, then I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is someone trying to talk to me and they dont speak English and I sure as heck dont speak theirs. At that point, I just have to stop any chat with them.
The people that raise all the hell about spelling, etc. are probably just flamers looking for a reason to spout their mouths off or are immature kids who cant try to reason out the message.
That is just my bit to say.
